GUA MUSANG: Water samples from Sungai Ketil have been sent to the Chemistry Department for testing after hundreds of fish were found dead in Rimba Wangi Recreational Park here recently.

Police warn of possible scams targeting Sara recipients
KUALA LUMPUR: The public has been urged to be cautious of scam syndicates which might take advantage of the RM100 assistance under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme, which Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently announced. Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said authorities expect these syndicates to become active again, targeting the public to obtain personal and banking information under the guise of verifying aid eligibility. These syndicates typically impersonate government agency representatives by contacting victims through fake messages or phishing links that appear official, sent via SMS, WhatsApp, or phone calls. "Once the criminals obtain details such as bank account numbers, identity card numbers or OTP codes, they will access the victim's account and transfer funds without the victim's knowledge," he said when contacted today. Although no police reports have been received so far involving scams linked to the programme, the authorities take seriously the potential for exploitation by irresponsible parties targeting vulnerable groups. As such, Rusdi advised the public to remain vigilant and never share any personal or financial information with unknown individuals. "Do not easily trust calls, messages, or links claiming to be from government agencies offering assistance. Never click on suspicious links or enter personal information on unverified websites," he said. Rusdi added that all matters relating to government aid, such as the SARA programme, should only be referred through official channels, including ministry or agency websites managing the aid. "The public is also advised to carefully check application terms, eligibility and implementation details before taking any action," he said. He noted that a small mistake like sharing an OTP code could lead to losses, and urged the public to only seek accurate and updated information through official government portals or recognised mainstream media. On July 23, Anwar announced a one-off RM100 cash aid for all Malaysians aged 18 and above via their MyKad under the SARA programme, involving a RM2 billion allocation benefiting 22 million people. The assistance can be used from Aug 31 to Dec 31, 2025 and is aimed at easing the people's cost of living. – Bernama

Malaysian property tycoon pleads guilty in case linked to Singapore ex-minister

(EPA Images pic) SINGAPORE: Property tycoon Ong Beng Seng pleaded guilty to abetting the obstruction of justice at the state court today, in a case linked to former Singapore transport minister S Iswaran, according to local media reports. The Malaysian businessman, who played a key role in bringing the F1 race to Singapore, admitted to the charge related to a December 2022 trip to Qatar, for which Iswaran had accepted Ong's invitation, The Straits Times (ST) reported. A second charge of abetting a public servant in obtaining gifts will be taken into consideration for sentencing. Ong was first charged on Oct 4, 2024. His guilty plea followed multiple pre-trial conferences and court adjournments. The prosecution said Iswaran did not pay for his flight to Doha or his return flight to Singapore, nor did he pay for his hotel accommodation. Iswaran had travelled to Doha on Ong's private jet, while his hotel stay and return business-class flight were paid for by Singapore GP Pte Ltd (SGP) on Ong's instructions. In October 2024, Iswaran was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment by the High Court after pleading guilty to four charges of obtaining valuable items as a public servant and one count of obstruction of justice. The obstruction of justice charge was linked to the S$5,700 Iswaran repaid to SGP for the cost of his business-class flight from Doha to Singapore in 2022. The prosecution said Ong also knew that Iswaran's act of making the repayment was likely to obstruct the course of justice, ST reported. Principal district judge Lee Lit Cheng set sentencing for Aug 15. Ong's bail of S$800,000 meanwhile was extended. In mitigation, Ong's defence team said that he suffered from multiple myeloma, a type of cancer, which rendered him immunocompromised and would endanger his life if he were to contract an infection in prison. Trapped driver injured in two-vehicle crash in Kota Belud

KOTA BELUD: A man sustained serious injuries after being trapped in a collision involving two vehicles in Kg Tambilaung, here, on Saturday. In the 8.55pm incident, a 53-year-old Wal Belah, who was driving a Proton Wira was reportedly suffered injuries to various parts of his body. Another man, aged 33, who was driving a Perodua Bezza, was also injured but was rescued by members of the public at the scene. Kota Belud Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) chief Elge Bakuk said the station received an emergency call at 9pm regarding the incident. 'A total of nine personnel were deployed to the scene with one fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) utility vehicle. 'Upon arrival, firefighters found one victim trapped in the front seat of the Proton Wira. The team used specialized equipment to extricate the victim,' he said. Elge said the injured driver was then handed over to the Ministry of Health (KKM) personnel and transported to Kota Belud Hospital for further treatment. 'The fire team also inspected both vehicles and the surrounding area to ensure there were no additional hazards.
