Sophie Ellis-Bextor says AI cannot copy human connection in music

Ellis-Bextor was presented with her award on Wednesday by Nordoff and Robbins, the UK's largest music therapy charity.
Tony Christie, who was given the icon award, said he was diagnosed with dementia after struggling with crosswords (Jonathon Brady/PA)
She told the PA news agency: 'I think there's something about the human connection in music that is impossible to mimic.
'I think the nuances and complexity of a human heart are something that only we have the hold the key to, really.
'So I'm sure AI will have its place actually. But I think when it comes to imperfections that we hold, it's very hard for something to mimic imperfections.
'We're very good at doing that, so I think, I think we've got that safe actually.'
The singer was awarded alongside Rick Astley, who received the outstanding achievement in music award; Noah Kahan, who was handed the best male award; and band Idles, who were named best live act.
Amarillo singer Tony Christie, who received the icon award, was diagnosed with dementia four years ago but has previously said he will not let the illness stop him.
He told PA at the London ceremony that he discovered he had dementia after struggling with crossword puzzles.
'All my life I've been good at crosswords and things like that,' the 82-year-old said.
'Suddenly, I was struggling with crosswords.'
The singer said that after his diagnosis, his doctor told him it is beneficial that he is in music, as listening to songs could help slow his deterioration.
'It makes people listen,' Christie said.
'Instead of sitting there quiet and worrying about it, they listen to music.'
The O2 Silver Clef awards celebrate artists who touch the lives of people through their music and the event helps to raise funds for Nordoff and Robbins to provide music therapy for vulnerable people across the UK.
Mika said music 'changed my whole life' (Jonathon Brady/PA)
Mika, who was given the global impact award, told of what Nordoff and Robbins means to him.
'I had loads of issues growing up,' the Grace Kelly singer told PA.
'I was kicked out of school. I was super dyslexic and bullied and so I hid in my own world.
'The only thing that pulled me out of that was music.
'So it kind of was a therapy, without even me realising it was happening and that changed my whole life.
'After being kicked out of school, I started working, I started doing music, I felt like a person again, and from then, I never left.'

This could well include showing his fifth wedding to wife Liz Davies, after he popped the question yet again. And the Deal or No Deal star, 76, is keen to get married again in their new Kiwi home. He told the Mirror of the proposal: 'We've been married a lot. We got married in a civil ceremony in the Cotswolds, then we went to our home in France and an Anglican minister who I knew very well came over and he was going to bless us and he did the whole thing again. 'So this became a bit of a joke with our friends. Oh yeah, we were filming on a cruise ship and the captain married us again. 'We've done four. But we want a Kiwi one. And there's a compelling reason why we should get married again, in New Zealand. We own a chapel. So why wouldn't we?' After two previous marriages he wed Liz Davies in 2009 after three years together. The couple met in 2006 when she was a stand-in make-up artist on his show, Deal or No Deal. Speaking at his wedding about how they met, Noel said: "To start with it was all very professional, but there was a look in both our eyes." Noel Edmonds and wife Liz Davies' relationship started in the TOILETS on Deal or No Deal They were married in a civil ceremony in the drawing room of Lower Slaughter Manor, a 17th century country house in the Cotswolds. Noel continued: 'I have a chapel. I acquired a chapel with the farm and as you can see, it is in desperate need of restoration. It's a fly and wasp cemetery. 'But my project, starting early next year, is to restore it completely and then Liz and I will get married for the fifth time.' It comes as the quirky host insisted that his new ITV1 show is nothing like Clarkson's Farm — because he's not as funny as the former Top Gear star. Noel exclusively told The Sun: 'When we were filming our show, some people who knew about Clarkson's Farm said to me, 'Oh, is it like Clarkson's Farm?' 'And I said, 'No, it couldn't be more different.' First of all, I'm not like Jeremy in many ways, though I wish I were. "He's brilliant. He can articulate an argument beautifully and deliver a sharp, humorous line like no one else.' Noel, 76, went on to crack a joke about his years in the showbiz wilderness. His last big gig was on I'm A Celebrity in 2018, when he was voted out after only nine days. Noel laughed: 'People still ask, 'Noel Edmonds? Didn't he die? Is he still around?' 'Yes, I'm still here — and living life to the full.' 4 For the first time, Noel will be putting his new life in New Zealand in the spotlight Credit: PA

Roger Federer made clear he had no time for bed-hopping 'wife-a-year' tennis stars

Roger Federer made clear he had no time for bed-hopping 'wife-a-year' tennis stars Tennis legend Roger Federer says a rock-solid personal life aided his incredible career, which featured 20 Grand Slam titles, with Jannik Sinner keen to follow suit Roger Federer cherishes the stability life with Mirka has given him (Image: Getty Images ) Roger Federer was never tempted to follow the example of some of his bed-hopping rivals during his illustrious tennis career. The retired Swiss legend, who clinched 20 Grand Slam titles, often credited his off-court life and marriage to fellow ex-tennis player Mirka as a significant factor in his success. The couple have been inseparable since their first encounter at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and tied the knot nine years later. Federer has suggested that his stable personal life gave him an advantage over competitors who frequently changed partners, telling the Spanish newspaper AS in 2019: "As a player, it's always good to have her because some players have a wife a year and then change her. Anything can make you happy but it can also distract you. "My life is perfect like that. I've always been in love with the same girlfriend, from the same wife, running the family and protecting them from the press. She hasn't had an interview for 12 to 15 years so people don't know what she does." Federer also acknowledged Mirka's profound influence not just on his tennis but on his character, given her own professional background in the sport. He added: "If I talk about tennis, she has a great impact not on my game but on my personality, because she was professional before me. I had more experience when I entered the circuit. "I worked hard. It made me grow and mature in my early years. Her support is incredible, it always helps me, it makes my life easier no matter what I win or lose. She is a born worker. She is amazing. I hope she doesn't change. I am always for her and vice versa." Article continues below The Federers have been together for a quarter of a century (Image: PA ) That attitude has perhaps struck a chord with current world No.1 Jannick Sinner, 23, who is at a very different stage of his life and career. Last year, he acknowledged a relationship with fellow tennis player Anna Kalinskaya. However, when probed about his current romantic situation in May, he confirmed his single status while also refuting rumours linking him to model Lara Leito. Sinner says he has recognised the value of a stable personal life, much like Federer, while acknowledging relationships aren't easy given the year-round nature of top-level tennis. He told Vanity Fair Italia: "No, of course it's not easy [having a relationship]. I travel a lot and during tournaments I'm very focused. Jannik Sinner is keen to keep his private life under wraps like Federer (Image:) "But I think it's a beautiful thing when you find the right love, like for everyone. And then, if you think about it, the best tennis players in the world all have wives and children." Article continues below Emphasising his need for privacy, he said: "I like talking about tennis, and sports in general. But if it refers to my private life, it's true, I want to keep it that way. "I want to protect the people closest to me, keeping them out of all this. I see it as a small task to do, almost a duty. They helped me, when I was young, to gain self-confidence, and today, in some way, I want to protect them." Sinner remains on track for his first Wimbledon title, taking only an hour and 40 minutes to overcome Australian Aleksandar Vukic in straight sets, dropping just five games in the process, to set up a third-round clash with Spain's Pedro Martinez on Saturday.

Coronation Street's real-life mum and son appeared on soap and fans 'had no idea'

Coronation Street's real-life mum and son appeared on soap and fans 'had no idea' Coronation Street has seen a number of real-life family members appear on the cobbles over the years - but fans were left stunned after realising two stars are mother and son Coronation Street's real-life mum and son appeared on soap and fans 'had no idea' (Image: PA ) Two stars of Coronation Street share more than just their talent for captivating audiences. The popular ITV soap has a history of featuring real-life family members on its iconic cobbles, including siblings, cousins, and even parent-child duos. ‌ Cousins Brooke Vincent and Ellie Leach have both enjoyed successful stints on the show, while the late Rick Neelan (played by Greg Wood) was actually the real-life brother of footballer Tommy Orpington (portrayed by Matt Milburn). ‌ However, they're not the only ones with familial ties both on and off screen. Fans were recently taken aback by the revelation of a mother-son duo who graced the soap years ago. Sue played Gloria on the soap (Image: Granada TV ) In 1985, Sue Jenkins joined the cast of Coronation Street as Gloria Todd, becoming a regular face at the Rovers Return pub. She worked alongside Julie Goodyear, who famously played landlady Bet Lynch, reports the Daily Star. Article continues below Beyond her time on Corrie, Sue also portrayed Jackie Corkhill in Brookside from 1992 to 2001, and made a brief appearance in Emmerdale in 2008 as Bonnie Drinkwater. Interestingly, Sue's son is none other than Richard Fleeshman, who also had a role on Coronation Street as Craig Harris. Her real-life son also appeared on the soap ‌ Richard became part of the Coronation Street family in 2002, joining as part of the Harris clan, who were under witness protection. His character, Craig, had some significant storylines during his tenure. He adopted a goth lifestyle, much to his father's disapproval, and became Rosie Webster's (portrayed by Helen Flanagan) first boyfriend. The plot thickened dramatically when Craig's sister, Katy Harris, killed their father following a heated argument about her clandestine relationship with Martin Platt. Fans have been left floored (Image: Granada Television ) ‌ Their mother, Angela Harris, attempted to protect Katy by covering up the crime, but overwhelmed by guilt, Katy took her own life. In the aftermath, Craig planned to flee to Berlin with Rosie, but ultimately departed alone, bidding farewell to the cobbles in 2006 for good. The revelation of Sue and Richard's roles on Corrie left fans astounded. On X, previously known as Twitter, one viewer posted about Sue's stint on Corrie. Another fan responded: "That's Richard fleeshmans mum!". A third person commented: "Wow, all this time watching and I never knew that, I can see her son in that photo now." Yet another added: "Her real life son played Craig Harris, son of Psycho Tommy!" Article continues below Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
