THE 2025-26 campaign officially got under way today with the first round draws for all the European competitions - and already there's been some major box office.
That's because the first round qualifying tie for the Champions League pits Northern Irish champions Linfield against Republic of Ireland champions Shelbourne.

And just happening to take charge of the two teams are Rangers hero David Healy, now of Linfield, and former Celtic first team coach Damien Duff at Shelbourne.
They're two massive characters and there was excitement to prior to the draw as everyone knew there was a twenty percent chance of the two teams meeting.
Linfield were seeded in Group 2 of the draw, while Shelbourne were unseeded.
And the Uefa draw has duly obliged.
The first leg in Dublin on 8/9 July and the second in Belfast on 15/16 July.
The two teams met in the final of inaugural Setanta Cup competition between the teams from the north and the south, with Linfield running out 2-0 winners.
A league and league cup double winner in his time with the Gers, Healy has been linked with various managers jobs in Scotland - most recently Dundee.
The Dark Blues were granted permission from Linfield to speak to the ex-Rangers and Northern Ireland striker.
But that role went to Steven Pressley instead - leaving the four-time Northern Irish manager of the year at Windsor Park.
Former Chelsea, Newcastle and Republic of Ireland winger Duff has been a breath of fresh air since leaving a first team coaching job with the Hoops to embark on his first manager's job at Shelbourne.
Celtic transfer special - Nygren in and Kyogo to return
They clinched the FAI Premier League title in 2024 and are desperate to emulate or better the European acheivements of Shamrock Rovers, who performed with credit in the Conference League phase last season.

Jamie Vardy handed Rangers transfer pitch as Poku tunes out ominous £10m jab and Toffolo opens door

Russell Martin is just days away from holding his first pre-season training session with Lyall Cameron the only new arrival so far Paul Dickov has challenged Jamie Vardy to make a move to "giant" Rangers to spearhead a bid to dethrone Celtic. The Light Blues are said to be among the club chasing the 38-year-old after his Leicester City exit with the new owners eyeing a landmark deal. ‌ Russell Martin is leading the American revolution at Ibrox from the dugout - and former Foxes' forward Dickov has guaranteed the veteran forward would be a "hit" under the boss in the Scottish Premiership. ‌ Speaking to Filbert Way, he said: "Jamie Vardy's got a lot to give. You've seen him at the end of last season, still running around as if he was 25 years old, still scoring goals. "So I think people look at his age and everything else, but he's still got a lot of football and a lot of goals in him. Whether that's the Premier League, who knows? "But definitely if it's a Championship or Scottish Premiership team, he'd be a hit. I think he would be a big success in Scotland, no doubt about it. "Playing for a giant like Rangers, blue jersey, it would be a good signing for them. I'm sure he's got a lot of offers and they are probably at home and abroad as well. "I think he'll be able to take his pick. Maybe he'll want an entirely new challenge, to take his family abroad for a couple of years. "Perhaps he'll want to drop to the Championship and take a club back to the Premier League. Moving to Rangers, there's the challenge of taking on Celtic. It all depends on what's going to motivate him next." ‌ Kwame Poku also looks to be inching closer to a move to Ibrox as the 23-year-old approaches the end of his Peterborough contract. Posh director of football Barry Fry has revealed he previously commanded a £5million and £5million in add-ons for the forward who is set to leave for a minimal fee. Should Poku move outside of England, a compensation fee under the lower rate FIFA guidelines would be due to the club due to cross-border rules. ‌ Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony told Poku to 'listen to common sense' and sign for an unnamed Championship club as he vented his frustration over the prospect of a cut-price payment. Speaking on his podcast, The Hard Truth, MacAnthony said: 'We know Kwame has been offered an absolute blockbuster move to a top, top club in England. I don't know what he's thinking or what he's waiting for. ‌ 'His agent is a big agent who represents Man United players. I think he'll rip it up in the Championship. Unless a Premier League club has come in, I don't know. 'Obviously if he ***** us and goes to Europe, I'd be furious, because I know he'll earn more and be in the Premier League in a year. 'I think a player like him disappears in Europe. If he goes to Europe, he disappears. That's his career. ‌ 'We took a chance and developed him. If he listens to common sense – and I hope his agent talks common sense because it's about him and not his agent – the best club for him is the one I know that's in for him because he'll be their stand-out player. 'And that club, we will talk to them if he does sign for them and I think common sense will meet.' Nottingham Forest left-back Harry Toffolo has named as a target after leaving the club as a free agent. ‌ And after leaving the club as a free agent, the 29-year-old has thrown the door open to an offer from Govan. He told Forest Focus: "My agent has actually left me to it whilst I've been on holiday. ‌ "He wants me to go and enjoy my time away, which he's done respectfully. Now I'm back, I'm going to get my teeth into some bits. "There's been a lot of conversations held with many clubs. So it's going to be an interesting summer. "It's going to be an exciting summer. Not a clue where I'm going to end up, which is quite fun. 'I'm used to travelling the country. So I think as long as my family, my wife and kids, we're all together, we're not really bothered where we go. "As long as we're going there and we feel appreciated, valued and I get the opportunity to play, then we'll take it.' Daniel Levy breaks silence on Ange Postecoglou sacking - as Tottenham chairman reveals why he appointed Thomas Frank

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has left Thomas Frank in little doubt about what he expects with a warning that one Europa League trophy is simply not enough. Levy made it clear he craves winning the Premier League and Champions League having sacked Ange Postecoglou just 16 days after leading Spurs to their first trophy for 17 years. He also expects to see a successful Spurs team, beating opponents in a fashion fit for their stylish home. 'There's no point having a wonderful stadium if you don't have a wonderful team, winning,' said Levy. 'Failure is not an option. The desire is to succeed and because it's so difficult I want to succeed even more. 'We've won a European trophy. It's not enough. It's what we haven't done that's more important. 'We need to win the league. We want to win the Premier League. We want to win the Champions League. We want to win.' Levy spoke alongside new chief executive Vinai Venkatesham on the club's in-house media channel about the pressure of the long wait for trophies and the decision to sack Postecoglou, who ended it but presided over a dreadful Premier League campaign last season, losing 22 of 38 games and finishing 17th. 'I'm very grateful to Ange,' said the Spurs chairman. 'I don't regret appointing Ange. 'In his first season we finished fifth and in our second season we were over the moon to win a trophy, but we need to compete in all competitions, and we felt that we needed a change. 'I've an excellent relationship with him. He's always going to be part of our history. Him and his family are always welcome back. 'It was a collective decision, it wasn't my decision, we do everything together. Emotionally it was difficult but we believe we've made the right decision for the club.' Venkatesham explained technical director Johan Lange had analysed more than 30 candidates for the job, delivered a short list and Brentford boss Frank emerged as 'absolutely our number one candidate' and 'an outstanding developer of young players'. On the fresh start, Levy added: 'The things that stood out to me with Thomas, he is clearly highly intelligent, great communicator, super human being, plus all the other technical aspects which are obviously really important.'

Leah Williamson insists ‘standards are high' in inexperienced England squad

The Lionesses have faced a whirlwind few weeks after goalkeeper Mary Earps and playmaker Fran Kirby announced their international retirement, while defender Millie Bright pulled out to prioritise her mental health. There are also seven new faces taking part in their first major tournament in Switzerland – Michelle Agyemang, Aggie Beever-Jones, Grace Clinton, Khiara Keating, Maya le Tissier, Anna Moorhouse and Jess Park. #WEURO2025 prep camp starts now 🤩 — Lionesses (@Lionesses) June 16, 2025 Preparations are well under way for Sarina Wiegman's side, who will begin the defence of their European crown against France on July 5. Asked what the mood is like with so many changes in camp, Williamson said: 'Everyone has a good attitude towards the job. This week is graft and then next week you start really focusing and honing in on the tournament. 'It's a fresh team in that sense. We probably carry less as a team now in terms of the experiences people have had, but I also see a group that is focused and wants to be better all the time. 'The standards are high, the standards from the more experienced players. It was a great session today and then it gets a bit more exciting, come Monday.' Williamson played a major part in England's Euro 2022 success but was ruled out of the entire World Cup campaign two years ago as the Lionesses made it to the final before losing to Spain. The 28-year-old ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament just three months before that tournament and is excited to be back with the group. She added: 'Personally, it's been a rocky period of time, like highest of highs and lowest of lows. 'I try and put that aside and I think it's a very different scenario now. 'I feel my age, if that makes sense, like I've definitely aged in the last couple of years for good and bad reasons. But it does feel slightly different. It's slightly different vibes, but I'm so excited to be back. 'I'm still keeping my head down and focusing on staying healthy and being in a good place. But I missed the last time and I'm very, very grateful to be here again.' Williamson enjoyed a successful season with Arsenal and was part of the team that helped the Gunners to European glory as they beat Barcelona 1-0 in the Champions League final last month. The Lionesses skipper insists she is now hungry for more success. 'I think one of the greatest things about being an athlete is that when you think you're done, you always have that extra part of yourself that you can tap into,' she said. 'You win and you think you want to just bathe in that euphoria. But there's always something else coming, and the best feeling in the world is being hungry for it, and I'm wanting to go again, winning in the summer. 'Being reminded of what that feels like (the Champions League win), I can't wait for the next challenge.'
