US to Pursue Seabed Mining With Cook Islands After China Pact

Bloomberg06-08-2025
The US has entered talks with the Cook Islands to develop seabed mineral resources, just months after the South Pacific nation formalized cooperation pacts with China that included exploration for undersea deposits.
The arrangement, unveiled during the Cook Islands' 60th anniversary of self-government, will include joint efforts to map the island nation's Exclusive Economic Zone, which is 'one of the most promising regions for deep-sea mineral deposits,' the US State Department said in a statement Tuesday.

Bessent Warns Europe It's ‘Put Up or Shut Up' Time on Russia

By , Annmarie Hordern, and Jonathan Ferro Save Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged European nations to be prepared to get on board with higher tariffs on China and other nations that buy Russian energy, lamenting that he got a cool response when he floated the idea at a Group of Seven meeting earlier this year. Bessent said sanctions on Russia 'can go up' or 'can be loosened' depending on the outcome of a meeting set for Friday between President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin. But the Europeans need to back the idea of harsher measures in any case.
