Porto close in on agreement to appoint Francesco Farioli

Yahoo01-07-2025
Francesco Farioli is set to become the new FC Porto head coach, according to Gianluca Di Marzio. The 36-year-old is currently without a job after leaving his role at Ajax after missing out on the Eredivisie title despite being nine points ahead in the latter stages of the season.
Once Martin Anselmi's contract has been terminated, Porto will move to appoint Farioli whom they showed interest in appointing in January following the dismissal of Vitor Bruna. The Italian also had interest from Roma, Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio, per Football Italia.
In the next few days, Porto are expected to reach an agreement with Farioli.

Stephanie Venier retires as world champion in super-G

Austrian Stephanie Venier is retiring from Alpine skiing, six months after winning her first senior world title and six months before the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. Venier, 31, said she considered retirement 'for some time' and that recurring knee problems played a role in the decision. 'As the saying goes: The peak of your career is the best time to retire,' she said, according to an Austrian ski federation press release. 'That's why I'm turning my back on ski racing and am very much looking forward to everything that's still to come.' This past Feb. 6, Venier won the super-G at the World Championships on home snow in Saalbach, edging Italian Federica Brignone by one tenth of a second. Venier, at the time ranked ninth in the World Cup super-G standings, earned her second world championships medal — eight years after taking downhill silver. She became the oldest woman to win a world super-G title and the oldest Austrian woman to win world championships gold in any individual event. 'The thought of ending my career isn't entirely new and has been brewing in my mind for some time,' she said, according to Thursday's release. 'But I wanted to take enough time for this drastic decision, because once I've made it, there's no turning back. The unwavering will required for elite sport has simply not been there in recent months to the extent I expect it to be. I more than fulfilled my greatest dream of winning a medal at the home World Championships in Saalbach with a gold and a bronze (in the team combined). Even though the Olympic Games are coming up next year, it feels like the right time for me to draw a line under my racing career. I look back on what I've achieved with great satisfaction.' The other top women's super-G skiers last season included Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami, who won the World Cup season title in the event. Gut-Behrami has said 2025-26 will be her final season. Brignone ranked second behind Gut-Behrami on the World Cup. The Italian is working her way back after breaking her left leg in a giant slalom crash on April 3. The top American super-G skiers are Lauren Macuga, who shared bronze at worlds and ranked sixth on the World Cup, and Lindsey Vonn, who placed second in the World Cup Finals super-G in March. That marked Vonn's first podium in her comeback from a five-year retirement. Nick Zaccardi,

Not so friendly! Players from Real Betis and Como exchange punches during preseason match in Spain

MADRID (AP) — A preseason friendly between Real Betis and Italian club Como got extra heated, with players exchanging punches and sparking a mass scuffle. There were several rough exchanges in the first half of the match in southern Spain on Wednesday, and Betis player Pablo Fornals and Como midfielder Maximo Perrone then got into an altercation entering halftime. They had a few brief words to each other and then started exchanging blows. Players from both teams rushed in and the altercation escalated. The benches were cleared, with substitutes and staff members entering the field, some trying to break up the fighting. It took several moments before order was reestablished. The referee sent off a player from each team. 'We are competitive and both teams want to win, but in the end there's a line you can't cross in these matches,' Betis midfielder Sergi Altimira said. 'They were making many fouls, stopping the match all the time." Como, which will face Barcelona in another preseason match on Sunday, won the friendly 3-2. ___ AP soccer:

Haller misses Dortmund's training camp

When Borussia Dortmund departed for their training camp in Saalfelden, the Bundesliga club announced that Sébastien Haller would not travel immediately due to illness, but would join later. However, local media outlet WAZ now reports that the 31-year-old striker will not be linking up with his teammates at the training camp at all and will instead remain in France for family reasons. Dortmund are keen to offload Haller, who has one year left on his contract and earns a hefty €9 million per year. Signed for a reported €31 million from Ajax in 2022, the Ivorian forward has been out on loan for the past year and a half. He spent the first half of last season in Spain with Leganés and the second half in the Netherlands with Utrecht.
