PETALING JAYA : PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli claims that its political bureau had initially agreed not to hold party elections this year.
He said the decision was based on past experience, where party elections triggered fierce contests for top posts, throwing the party into disarray.
The plan was to hold party elections after the next general election (GE16), with a second term secured for party president Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.
However, the decision was reversed on the grounds that party elections were needed to bring in 'new talent' such as Ramanan Ramakrishnan and Kamil Abdul Munim.
Speaking at a campaign event in Terengganu last night, Rafizi said party leaders had initially wanted to focus on the people's needs and on governance instead of party elections.
'Our performance is good, the rakyat is starting to be more open to us, and there are signs we're making headway with Malay voters. So why take the risk and hold party elections?' he said.
He said the plan was to win GE16, secure a second term for Anwar, and then amend the party constitution to allow elections six months after each general election, a model which he said is practised in many other countries.
'This is normal. Other countries do it too.'
He said political parties in other countries do not hold internal elections halfway through a government term.
However, the decision was reversed, on the grounds that party elections were needed to bring in new talent. He specifically named Ramanan, who is eyeing a vice-president post, and Kamil, who has won the PKR Youth chief post uncontested.
'The reason given was that if we delay until 2027, Kamil would be over 35 and ineligible to contest in the youth wing,' he said.
Rafizi said the reversal has opened the floodgates to opportunism and sparked the current internal turbulence.
'If we had stuck with the original decision and not entertained these two or three so-called new talent who are so eager to jump in, we wouldn't have 'HIRUK' and 'DAMAI',' he said, referring to the rival camps led by him and Nurul Izzah Anwar in the race for the deputy presidency.
Last year, it was reported that discussions had taken place at a central leadership meeting on the possibility of delaying party elections until after the general election.
However, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh clarified that no final decision was reached during those discussions.
PKR members will vote for the party's central leadership next Friday.

Shafee lodges police report against ex-AG over royal addendum

Najib Razak's lawyer, Shafee Abdullah, alleged that former attorney-general Ahmad Terrirudin Salleh had 'deliberately misled' the High Court over the royal addendum issue. KUALA LUMPUR : Najib Razak's lawyer has lodged a police report against former attorney-general Ahmad Terrirudin Salleh for allegedly 'deliberately misleading' the High Court that the royal addendum was speculative and based on hearsay evidence. At a press conference after lodging the report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters here today, Shafee Abdullah claimed that Terrirudin had committed an offence under Section 209 of the Penal Code, which relates to dishonestly making a false claim before a court. Shafee alleged that Terrirudin had also committed an offence under Section 204 of the Penal Code by hiding a document with the intention of preventing it from being used as evidence in court. He said he had lodged the police report on behalf of Najib, who had not received any response from the authorities after the former prime minister requested to lodge the report personally. Last month, Najib filed an application to initiate contempt proceedings against Terrirudin. His legal team, Messrs Shafee & Co, claimed that Terrirudin, while serving as the attorney-general, failed to reveal the former king's royal addendum allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his jail sentence under house arrest. During a hearing in January, Shafee told the Court of Appeal the addendum was sent by the Pahang palace to Terrirudin on Jan 29, 2024.

TNB earmarks RM43bil to update national grid with AI, battery storage

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the Asean bloc has already laid the groundwork through the Asean Carbon Capture and Storage Deployment Framework and Roadmap. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : National utility company Tenaga Nasional Bhd has committed RM43 billion to upgrade the national grid infrastructure, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He said the upgrade will incorporate artificial intelligence and battery energy storage systems to build greater resilience and flexibility for the future, Bernama reported. 'We must invest in improving efficiency and reducing emissions within our existing energy systems. 'This is a formidable task, given that fossil fuels still account for nearly 80% of global supply,' he said in his keynote address at the Energy Asia 2025 conference in Kuala Lumpur today. On Asean, he highlighted that the bloc has already laid the groundwork for this pragmatic pathway through the Asean Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Deployment Framework and Roadmap. This aims to streamline policies and facilitate the flow of capital and carbon across borders. 'Malaysia is doing its part. Earlier this year, we passed the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Bill 2025 to provide a regulatory foundation for this emerging sector. 'Petronas is leading the charge with plans to develop three CCS hubs in our offshore waters, serving not just the oil and gas sector but also other hard-to-abate industries,' he said. Anwar added that Malaysia's CCS efforts involve more than 10 international partners, including Japan, South Korea, and global energy firms such as Total and Shell. 'Petronas is also working with Eneos Corporation, Mitsubishi and JX Nippon to explore the transport and storage of carbon dioxide from the Tokyo Bay area to Malaysia. 'This positions CCS not only as a vital decarbonisation tool but also as a promising new revenue stream for the region,' he said. The Energy Asia 2025 conference, themed 'Delivering Asia's Energy Transition', is being held from June 16 to 18. The event offers a chance for Malaysia and the region to review progress on energy transition efforts and reaffirm their commitments to net-zero targets.

I wish Rafizi all the best, says Anwar

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today praised Rafizi Ramli for his strong performance as economy minister. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today thanked Rafizi Ramli for his contributions as economy minister following the Pandan MP's resignation from the Cabinet. Speaking to reporters at the Energy Asia 2025 conference, Anwar confirmed that the economy ministry would remain intact. 'I wish Rafizi all the best – he served exceptionally well in his role,' he said. 'I will determine, in due time, which minister or ministry will take over these responsibilities.' Rafizi and natural resources and environmental sustainability minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad submitted their resignation letters on May 28. Nik Nazmi, a two-term MP, failed to retain his PKR vice-president post while Rafizi lost the party's deputy presidency to Nurul Izzah Anwar. Anwar is the PKR president. Anwar previously said he had received the duo's leave applications and resignation letters, but had only approved their applications to go on leave. Rafizi is on leave until today while Nik Nazmi's leave ends on July 3. In a post on X last Friday, Rafizi reflected on his last day at the ministry, thanking his team of policy officers for their efforts in implementing economic initiatives. The New Straits Times meanwhile reported that Nik Nazmi had declined to comment on whether he was reconsidering his resignation.
