A Netflix show looks back on the 'poop cruise': Here's what happened

USA Today11 hours ago

About halfway through 'Trainwreck: Poop Cruise,' a new undefined on Netflix, Devin Marble wanders around dark hallways on a Carnival Cruise Line ship searching for a working bathroom.
The then 28-year-old was a passenger onboard the Carnival Triumph, which lost power following an engine room fire in 2013 – including to flush most onboard toilets. 'But every time I walked into a bathroom, you open up the door, 'Nope, that one doesn't work,'' he said in the show. 'Go into the next one, 'Nope, that one's disgusting. That one doesn't work.''
The ship was stranded near Mexico with more than 3,000 guests, including Marble and his soon-to-be wife and in-laws. Marble eventually found a bathroom, and more than a decade later, his camera footage makes up part of the latest installment of the 'Trainwreck' anthology series, which debuted Tuesday.
'You know, it's funny. Looking back on it, I keep thinking to myself it wasn't as bad as I thought at the time,' Marble, now 40, told USA TODAY ahead of the episode's premiere. 'And maybe time helps heal all wounds.'
What is 'Trainwreck: Poop Cruise' about?
The episode traces a February 2013 cruise aboard Carnival Triumph from Galveston, Texas to Mexico. The trip went smoothly until its return journey, when the fire left the ship dead in the water with insufficient backup power.
Passengers were stuck onboard for around four days without working toilets, air conditioning or lighting in many parts of the ship before it was finally towed to Mobile, Alabama.
Guests who had been sunbathing on the open decks were soon dragging mattresses out of their cabins to escape stifling heat. Plentiful buffet selections were replaced by what was leftover after many perishables were discarded. And crew members tried to keep guests comfortable and safe – even as sewage began flooding parts of the ship.
One employee can be seen in the documentary standing in brown water in his cabin.
'You start off with two worlds, which are the passengers and the crew, and really they never mix,' director James Ross told USA TODAY. 'But actually, once this disaster happens, everybody's in the same boat, literally. So what's happening to the passengers, that's also happening to the crew as well, they're having to deal with this situation. So, a lot of the walls that are kind of necessarily built for people to have the holiday vacation of a lifetime, those walls start to crumble down – and then you get this really interesting mix of, we're all just human beings stuck on board a boat with no toilets.'
The episode incorporates footage from the ship, such as the clips Marble captured, which he initially began filming to memorialize his vacation. An archive team also assisted with gathering others. They recreated scenes that were less likely to be filmed in the moment, such as operations on the bridge.
'Those were things that we had to get creative and reconstruct,' said Ross. 'You know, there's never really a moment as a director when you're trying to work out how you're going to film someone going for a wee in a shower.'
Carnival told USA TODAY the incident was a 'teachable moment for the entire cruise industry.'
'A thorough investigation following the incident revealed a design vulnerability which was corrected and led Carnival Cruise Line to invest more than $500 million across our entire fleet in comprehensive fire prevention and suppression, improved redundancy, and enhanced management systems, all in support of our commitment to robust safety standards,' the cruise line said in an emailed statement. 'This is in addition to our vigorous Health, Environmental, Safety and Security (HESS) protocols that guide the entire Carnival Corporation fleet as we maintain our commitment to industry leadership in this area.'
The ship still sails under the name Carnival Sunrise.
How long is 'Trainwreck: Poop Cruise'?
The episode runs about 55 minutes long.
How do I watch 'Trainwreck: Poop Cruise'?
The episode is now available to stream on Netflix.
Marble credited the crew members as "superheroes" and said the ordeal became a bonding experience for him and his new extended family. He learned, for example, that he and his now-wife's father both traveled with extra batteries and flashlights just in case, even before the events unfolded.
'Crisis shows people's true colors,' he said.

10 TV lesbian and sapphic storylines overshadowed on their own shows

Netflix; Fox Freema Agyeman as Amanita Caplan and Jamie Clayton as Nomi Marks on Sense8; Aisha Hinds as Hen Wilson and Tracie Nicole Thoms as Karen Wilson on 9-1-1. TV audiences love a good ship! Gay and queer relationships are often one of the fandom's favorite parts of a TV show. Whether the couple is canon or not, fans have a lot of fun with fan fiction, fan art, and other ways to express their love. Unfortunately, lesbian and sapphic couples often get pushed to the side by the fandom in favor of male/male ships — sometimes even male/male ships that aren't even canon. There are other times when sapphic ships don't receive enough attention because a show is too packed with other exciting things happening. Here are some of our fan-favorite (but often underappreciated) lesbian and sapphic ships from television. Fox Brittany and Santana on Glee. While Santana and Brittany got plenty of love on Glee, there's no doubt that they were overshadowed on the show by another popular gay couple - Kurt and Blaine. One of the most blatant examples comes in the episode where Santana and Brittany are getting married. The two young women have planned and organized their dream wedding, and then, at the last minute, they decide to invite Kurt and Blaine to get married alongside them, making their special day about another couple. Streaming on Hulu Fox Hen and Karen Wilson on 9-1-1. If you were to ask most people what the most popular same-sex relationship on 9-1-1 is, you'd most likely hear the answer, Buck and Eddie. While Buck did eventually come out as bisexual on the show, he and Eddie are still just friends. The show does, however, have a long-running lesbian couple in Henrietta "Hen" Wilson (Aisha Hinds) and her wife, Karen (Tracie Thoms). Hen and Karen have been together since season 1, and now, they are married and have two children. Streaming on Hulu Fabio Lovino/HBO Mia and Valentina on The White Lotus season 2. Valentina (Sabrina Impacciatore) was the secret MVP of The White Lotus season 2. While people were being distracted by a family of American womanizers, murderous gays, and a pseudo-uncle-cousin sexual relationship, this lesbian hotel manager had the best storyline of the whole season. At first, Valentina has an unrequited crush on her subordinate, Isabella. When that doesn't work out, she's heartbroken. That's when sex worker Mia (Beatrice Grannò) approaches her, and Valentina reveals she had never been with a woman before. Mia takes Valentina up to one of the hotel's empty rooms, and her life is forever changed. Streaming on HBO Max Netflix Amanita and Nomi at Pride on Sense8. We understand why Lito and Miguel are such a popular ship on this sci-fi show from The Wachowskis, but we also want to share our love for Nomi and Amanita! Not only are they an adorable, sexy, and loving lesbian couple, but they are also one of the few good examples of a lesbian relationship involving a trans woman on TV. Streaming on Netflix Bonnie Osborne/ABC Annalise Keating and Tegan Price in a courtroom on How to Get Away with Murder. How to Get Away with Murder had plenty of sexy relationships and hookups, and one fan-favorite is the relationship between Connor Walsh (Jack Falahee) and Oliver Hampton (Conrad Ricamora). One of our favorite couples from the show is Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) and Tegan Pride (Amirah Vann), who joined the show in season 4 and became a regular in season 5. Unfortunately, their relationship didn't get as much screen time as we would have liked! Streaming on Hulu Netflix Lily Iglehart and Ola Nyman on Sex Education. There's a lot of sex and relationships going on in Sex Education. One of the favorites is the relationship between Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and Adam (Connor Swindells), an openly gay student and his former bully. We also want to give a shout out to another favorite, though often overlooked, relationship: Ola and Lily! Lily is a strange student who is obsessed with aliens and becomes Ola's chaperone when Ola joins their school in season 2 of the show. Later, Ola has a dream where she kisses Lily, making her realize she is pansexual. Soon, the two start dating, though their relationship isn't without its ups and downs. Streaming on Netflix Paramount+ Dr Tara Lewis and Rebecca Wilson on Criminal Minds Evolution. When Criminal Minds was revived in 2022, it was renamed Criminal Minds: Evolution. The show has over 350 episodes in its 18 seasons, so there are plenty of relationships to love. One of our favorites is the relationship between pansexual forensic psychologist Dr. Tara Lewis (Aisha Tyler) and prosecutor Rebecca Wilson (Nicole Pacent). The two characters appear on Criminal Minds: Evolution, and are one of our current favorite parts of the show. Streaming on Paramount+ FX The Countess and Ramona Royale on American Horror Story: Hotel. Of course, each season of American Horror Story is full of wild terrors and steamy sex. Still, we want to give some special attention to Ramona and The Countess Elizabeth, played by two legends: Angela Bassett and Lady Gaga. In the 1970s, Ramona was a blaxploitation film star before meeting Elizabeth. When they met, they started a decade-long relationship, and the Countess turned Ramona into one of her vampires. Unfortunately, so much was going on in this season that their love story got overshadowed. Streaming on Hulu Ryan Green/Paramount+ Cruz and Josie on Lioness. You might think Lioness is all about action and thrills, but one of the best parts of the show is queer character Gunnery Sergeant Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira), who works with the Lioness program. In season 2, she's recruited to shadow Josephina "Josie" Carrillo, a US Army Apache pilot with a family connection to a Mexican cartel. What starts as a job soon turns into love for the two. Streaming on Reiner Bajo/Disney Tina and Wolfie on Nine Perfect Strangers. This twisty and dark drama about a wellness retreat led by Masha Dmitrichenko (Nicole Kidman) has a great queer couple in season 2 that you might not know about! Wolfie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) and Tina (King Princess) are a pair of girlfriends who visit the wellness retreat in the second season. Nine Perfect Strangers has a large cast of talented actors, but this is one relationship viewers should key in on. ‘Love Island USA' Season 7 Sets New Bar For Series, Soaring Past 1B Minutes Viewed In Week After Debut, Per Luminate

Love Island USA has undeniably elevated its profile since last year's bombshell of a season. The series returned with Season 7 on June 3 and by the end of the following week it was the second most-watched streaming show on television. From June 6 to 12, the season racked up 1.2B minutes viewed across nine available episodes, per Luminate's streaming data. More from Deadline 'Fubar' Season 2 Debut Barely Makes Netflix Weekly TV List Amid Steep Audience Decline As 'Ginny & Georgia' Remains On Top 'The Mortician' Becomes HBO's Most-Watched Documentary Series In Over 5 Years Streaming Hits New High, Surpassing Broadcast & Cable TV Viewing In May For First Time, Nielsen Says That's a 244% increase over the week prior, when the first few episodes drew about 335M minutes viewed. However, the most impressive gains are season-over-season. Season 6 outperformed every prior season of the show by a mile, but it wasn't until around the second week of July (which was about a month into the season's six-week run) that it really took off. In fact, Luminate reported that Season 6 had tallied 500.7M minutes viewed the week of June 21. Since Season 6 premiered on June 11, the timing is a bit off, but that's about 15 available episodes drawing half the weekly viewership that Season 7 has with nine. Season 6 didn't crack a billion minutes viewed until the week of July 8. Things have been heating up very quickly on Season 7 of Love Island USA, which airs nearly in real time. So, it is likely that the viewership will keep increasing, especially given that some of the series' signature and highly anticipated twists like Casa Amor and Movie Night have yet to happen. It will be interesting to see how far the show will go and whether it'll completely surpass Season 6's viewership high. Also, Love Island UK has also launched in the week since this data was recorded, which could affect Love Island USA viewership as well, since there is a bit of overlap in the audiences. Whether the impact will be positive or negative remains to be seen. The two could encourage increased engagement given that overlap, or it could end up fueling a bit of fatigue, since both shows air new episodes six days a week. The one thing that is clear is that Season 6 definitely catapulted the U.S. iteration of the reality dating series to unprecedented levels of popularity. The show's meteoric rise last season is likely due to a few factors. The cast does seem to have captured audience interest in a way that previous casts did not. That explains why Peacock has granted a whole new reality series to that cast, setting Love Island: Beyond the Villa to debut in July. Additionally, Vanderpump Rules' Ariana Madix also joined the series as its host last season, which undoubtedly elevated its profile as well. And, of course, last season's drama had social media, particularly TikTok, ablaze with commentary, which likely was a driving force behind increased engagement. Love Island USA is produced by ITV America. The series is based on a format owned by Lifted Entertainment and GroupM Motion Entertainment and distributed by ITV Studios. Luminate is owned by Deadline's parent company, Penske Media Corporation.
