Roku Stock Plunges 10% in 3 Months: Should You Buy the Dip or Wait?

Globe and Mail28-05-2025

Roku ROKU shares have lost 10.3% in the trailing three months, underperforming the Zacks Consumer Discretionary sector and the Zacks Broadcast Radio and Television industry's growth of 2.6% and 14.4%, respectively.
The dip in Roku's shares can be attributed to investor concerns around potential tariff impacts on the company's Devices segment. Although Roku's TV unit sales might decline slightly as a possible outcome of tariffs, it is unlikely to hurt the company's market share.
Roku has a diversified manufacturing strategy. It manufactures in multiple countries, which provides the company with agility and flexibility to help mitigate the effects of tariffs. Additionally, the company has already implemented some minor price adjustments and it does not expect any significant change to its gross profit in the Devices segment. If TV prices rise due to tariffs and consumer demand dips, Roku's streaming players offer an easy, affordable way for users to upgrade and extend the life of their existing TVs without needing to invest in a new one.
ROKU's 3 Month Price Performance
Roku Benefits From Frndly TV Acquisition
On May 2, Roku announced that it had entered into an agreement to acquire Frndly TV. This acquisition is a strategic step to expand its subscription offerings and deepen user engagement on its platform. Frndly TV is a fast-growing 'skinny bundle' service with a loyal viewer base. It offers popular linear channels like Hallmark, Lifetime and A&E, which are genres that strongly resonate with traditional TV audiences, making the shift to streaming.
Roku sees Frndly TV not just as a content addition but as a growth asset. The acquisition is expected to be EBITDA-margin accretive in its first full year, signaling financial upside alongside strategic value. What makes the deal particularly synergistic is Roku's ability to scale Frndly TV across its ecosystem. By embedding it into its platform, Roku will enhance both its content bundle and advertising proposition.
Roku's Ad Business Grows Amid Fierce Competition
Roku operates in a highly competitive advertising industry and competes for revenues with other companies that have launched ad-supported streaming. Some of these companies include Netflix NFLX, Warner Bros. Discovery WBD and Disney DIS.
Since its launch, Netflix's ad-supported tier reached 70 million global monthly users as of late 2024, while Warner Bros. Discovery expanded its ad-supported tier on Max to more than 45 countries in the past 15 months. As of January this year, Disney had approximately 157 million global monthly active users watching ad-supported content across its streaming platforms. Shares of Netflix have returned 24.4% in the trailing three months, while Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney have lost 13.3% and 0.3%, respectively.
Despite this pressure, Roku's ad-supported streaming business continued to deliver strong momentum in the first quarter of 2025, driven by its expanding platform scale and innovative advertising strategies. Platform revenues grew 17% year over year to $881 million, supported by both video advertising and streaming services distribution. Roku's reach now exceeds half of all U.S. broadband households, with its Home Screen serving as the lead-in for TV for more than 125 million people daily.
The Roku Channel became the #2 app on the platform by engagement, with streaming hours up 84% year over year and more than 85% of viewing occurring through Roku's curated interface. Ad activities outside the Media & Entertainment vertical outperformed the U.S. OTT ad market, aided by integrations with Adobe and INCRMNTAL. With tools like Roku Ads Manager and flexible buying options, Roku continues to solidify its standing in the ad-supported streaming space.
Roku Reaffirms Guidance for 2025
For 2025, Roku reaffirmed its guidance for Platform revenues of $3.95 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $350 million. Platform gross margin is expected to be approximately 52%. Devices revenues and gross profit are expected to remain consistent with 2024 levels.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 total revenues is pegged at $4.55 billion, suggesting year-over-year growth of 10.54%. The consensus mark for 2025 loss is pinned at 17 cents per share, which has narrowed by 39.3% over the past 30 days, indicating growth of 80.9% from the figure reported in the year-ago quarter.
Roku's earnings beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate in each of the trailing four quarters, with the average surprise being 51.15%.
Although the company's price-to-cash flow ratio of 33.94X is slightly ahead of the Zacks Broadcast Radio and Television industry average of 32.98X, this premium valuation reflects investor confidence in the company's growth potential for the rest of 2025.
ROKU's Price/Cash Flow Ratio
Here's Why You Should Buy ROKU Stock
Despite the recent share price pressure, Roku's long-term outlook remains strong. The company continues to grow its platform revenues, expand user engagement and innovate across advertising and content. Its acquisition of Frndly TV adds strategic depth to its subscription offerings, while its diversified manufacturing strategy helps mitigate tariff risks. With a promising 2025 guidance, rising ad momentum and strong performance from The Roku Channel, Roku is well-positioned to thrive in a competitive streaming landscape. As it scales its platform and improves monetization, Roku offers solid growth potential for investors looking beyond market headwinds.
ROKU currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) and has a Growth Score of A, a favorable combination that offers a strong investment opportunity, per the Zacks proprietary methodology. You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.

3 Nuclear ETFs to Watch as U.S. Policy Sparks a Surge

While investors have generally been cautious regarding green energy since the presidential election last November, the Trump administration has recently provided multiple signals that it intends to boost domestic nuclear energy by a significant amount. In May, the president signed a series of executive orders aiming to facilitate the construction of nuclear plants on public lands, grow U.S. uranium mining operations, and, controversially, revisit exposure limits for ionizing radiation. The exact impact of these orders remains to be seen, but investors have good reason now to expect movement in companies linked to nuclear energy, particularly amid rising demand related to AI usage. Individual pure-play stocks like Denison Mines Corp. (TSE: DML) and even larger energy firms with a nuclear arm such as PG&E Corp. (NYSE: PCG) could benefit from recent government action. But investors may not wish to make a bet on individual companies while the regulatory landscape is shifting so dramatically. Instead, a number of high-quality nuclear energy exchange-traded funds (ETFs) provide a diversified alternative and excellent, broad exposure to the industry. This Uranium ETF Offers Growth and Dividends Too [content-module:CompanyOverview|NYSEARCA:URNM] Though it's down more than 2% in the last year, the Sprott Uranium Miners ETF (NYSEARCA: URNM) has surged by nearly 19% in the past month. With roughly 36 holdings, URNM is one of the more consolidated portfolios among the relatively small number of nuclear energy ETFs available. As such, investors should expect that a small number of positions will occupy outsized portions of the fund, the top two names are roughly 30% of invested assets, for example. As a uranium miners fund, URNM provides exposure to one corner of the broader nuclear energy space. The fund sets itself apart by investing a sizable portion of its asset base, nearly 12%, in the Sprott Physical Uranium Trust, a fund dedicated to holding physical uranium. Investors should also note that not every company in URNM's portfolio is exclusively dedicated to uranium mining; the fund's target index aims to include companies devoting at least 50% of their assets to the uranium mining industry. URNM's mix of assets allows it to pay an attractive dividend yield of 3.13%, making it a good choice for investors seeking both capital appreciation and passive income potential. And with an expense ratio of 0.75%, URNM is solidly in the middle when it comes to fees across the nuclear energy fund space. Global X Uranium ETF Powers Ahead With 29% Gain [content-module:CompanyOverview|NYSEARCA:URA] The Global X Uranium ETF (NYSEARCA: URA) has outperformed URNM above with one-year returns near 9% and a rally of 29% in the last month. It also enjoys substantially higher trading volumes, with a one-month average of more than 3.6 million shares. URA has close to 50 holdings and is not limited to uranium mining firms, although it is highly concentrated, with the top position occupying nearly a quarter of the portfolio. URA may be among the best options for exposure to the broad uranium industry, including both mining firms and companies involved in designing and building nuclear energy components. It has a focus across developed markets, so companies in countries heavily involved in the industry, including Canada and South Korea, among others, have prominent positions. Investors might need to know that URA has a history of fairly wide price swings, including a drop of roughly 50% from November 2024 through April 2025. Still, its expense ratio of 0.69% makes it one of the cheapest ETFs to focus exclusively on the nuclear energy space. This Nuclear ETF Is Quietly Crushing the Market [content-module:CompanyOverview|NYSEARCA:NUKZ] With an even more impressive return of 54% in the last year (and a very strong 21% boost in the past month), the Range Nuclear Renaissance Index ETF (NYSEARCA: NUKZ) targets a slightly different space than the two funds above. NUKZ is focused on companies operating within the advanced reactor, utilities, construction & services, and fuel industries. Its 45-holding portfolio is similarly focused, but assets are distributed somewhat more evenly across these positions: the largest holding is under 10% for NUKZ. NUKZ also has the advantage of a truly global focus, although its relatively smaller asset base and trading volume may offset this in comparison with URNM and URA. Investors should also not expect much by way of dividend payments from NUKZ, and its fee is slightly higher at 0.85%. Still, if it can maintain recent momentum, these other factors may not matter much to investors. Where Should You Invest $1,000 Right Now? Before you make your next trade, you'll want to hear this. Leonard Lauder, billionaire heir to cosmetics empire, dies at 92

Leonard Lauder, the eldest son of cosmetics pioneers Estée and Joseph H. Lauder and the former head of cosmetics giant Estée Lauder Companies, seen here in New York on May 5, 2014 has died age 92, according to an announcement by the company. Dennis Van Tine/via CNN Newsource Leonard Lauder, the eldest son of cosmetics pioneers Estée and Joseph H. Lauder and the former head of cosmetics giant Estée Lauder Companies, died on Saturday, according to an announcement by the company. He was 92. 'Throughout his life, my father worked tirelessly to build and transform the beauty industry, pioneering many of the innovations, trends, and best practices that are foundational to the industry today,' Leonard's son William P. Lauder, who serves as chairman of the company's board of directors, said in the statement. Born to a Jewish family in New York City, Leonard Lauder as a boy would join his mother on sales calls in salons and helped her pack boxes of powder and cleansing oils. He would later attend and graduate from Columbia University's School of Business after serving as a lieutenant in the US Navy for three years. He formally joined Estée Lauder at age 25 in 1958, when the company had just a handful of employees and under $1 million in sales. Estée Lauder Companies would grow into a global empire with a portfolio that includes Clinique, La Mer, The Ordinary, MAC Cosmetics and Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. Among his many roles included serving as president for 23 years, beginning in 1972, and chief executive from 1982 to 1999. He was named chairman in 1995 and held the role until 2009, according to the company. In 1995, Lauder took the company public on the New York Stock Exchange at $26 a share. The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. (EL) now has a market capitalization of about $24.3 billion. According to Bloomberg's Billionaire Index, Lauder had a personal net worth of $15.6 billion. When asked what he would want to be remembered for during a 2020 interview with CBS News, Lauder replied: 'He listened … and he was kind.' Within 24 hours of meeting Lauder, one could expect intimate, often handwritten, notes from the beauty pioneer. It was a sales technique that resembled the professional style of his mother, who was also known for believing business was about developing and maintaining relationships and making people feel important. 'At the beginning, we never advertised … we gave out samples,' he told David Rubenstein, the co-founder of the Carlyle Group, in 2021. 'We gave out samples that were large enough. If you give a customer a sample of a product and they like it, they come back and buy it again and again and again— that's what builds the business.' Lauder has been credited with creating 'the lipstick index' during the economic downturn following the attacks on September 11, 2001. He noticed that the purchase of cosmetics, especially lipsticks, tended to be inversely related to the economy because women replaced more expensive purchases with small pick-me-ups. In the fall of 2001, US lipstick sales increased by 11%. And back during the Great Depression, cosmetics sales overall increased by 25%. Lauder was also a devoted philanthropist and art collector. In 2013, he pledged a 78-piece collection of cubist art to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City — the largest single philanthropic gift in the Met's history, according to Estée Lauder. He also established a research center for modern art at the Met, which supported fellowships, exhibitions and public lectures. He was also an advocate of cancer research and served as an honorary chairman on the Breast Cancer Research Foundation's board of directors. In 1998, Lauder and his brother, Ronald S. Lauder, founded the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation, which supports drug research to prevent, treat and cure Alzheimer's. 'His impact will be felt for generations to come thanks to his tireless philanthropy, advocacy, and creativity in tackling some of the world's greatest challenges. The number of lives he touched and positively impacted across all his endeavors is immeasurable,' said Ronald Lauder, 81, who serves as chairman of Clinique Laboratories. The company's founding family remains the biggest shareholder in the firm, and three members serve on the board of directors. He is survived by his wife, Judy Glickman Lauder, and his sons William and Gary.

Nvidia vs Palantir: Wall Street Says Buy Only 1 of These 2 Soaring Stocks

Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) have been two of the stock market's biggest winners over the past couple of years -- they even delivered the best performances in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500, respectively, in 2024. Investors love these stocks for their positions in the high-growth artificial intelligence (AI) market. Nvidia is the world's leading AI chip designer, and Palantir sells a popular AI-driven software platform that helps customers make better use of their data. Both of these companies have reported soaring revenue and demand, and long-term prospects look bright as well. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Learn More » But Wall Street only recommends buying one of these players. According to Wall Street's average price forecast, one of these stocks is expected to climb nearly 20% in the next 12 months, while the other is expected to decline by 25%. Let's take a closer look at each and then find out which one Wall Street favors right now. The chip giant Nvidia is the world's AI chip leader, offering graphics processing units (GPUs) that outperform all others on the market. They're pricier than rivals, but the company says that over time, gains in efficiency result in lower total cost of ownership. So, Nvidia GPUs may actually be the least expensive option for customers if they commit to them over the long run. Nvidia hasn't had to worry about attracting customers, though. Demand for its latest architecture and chip, Blackwell, surpassed supply as the platform launched a few months ago. Blackwell delivered $11 billion in revenue during its first quarter on the market. And Nvidia's pledge to update its chips on an annual basis should keep this growth going. Of course, the AI giant faces rivals, such as Advanced Micro Devices, and even Nvidia's own customers, in some cases, have become rivals as they make their own chips. (They haven't abandoned Nvidia but are using their own chips in addition to Nvidia GPUs.) Still, there's enough demand in the growing AI market to allow Nvidia to remain on top and for others to succeed as well. The data analysis powerhouse Palantir's business may not seem too exciting at first: The company offers software, driven by AI, that aggregates a customer's disparate data and puts it to work. But what sounds simple or mundane is actually driving some pretty exciting results. For example, on a battlefield, it's helping the military make faster and better decisions. As for commercial use, customer Rio Tinto says Palantir's software, by accessing unstructured data, is helping it tackle problems it never thought possible. In Palantir's early days, governments were its biggest customers, but in recent times, commercial growth has taken off. Companies across sectors are rushing to Palantir's Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) to help them solve problems or implement new processes and strategies. In the latest quarter, Palantir's commercial business delivered double-digit revenue growth, and the government business has continued to do the same. So, Palantir has two high-growth businesses, and considering the company's comments about recent demand, there's reason to be optimistic about the future. The one problem with investing in Palantir is the stock's valuation. It trades for a lofty 232 times forward earnings estimates. But it's important to remember that this only considers earnings expected next year and doesn't account for the company's prospects over the long run. What does Wall Street think? Now, which of these two does Wall Street recommend buying? About 30 Wall Street firms have a positive recommendation, such as buy or outperform, on Nvidia, and the average 12-month price forecast indicates a gain of 19% from the closing price on June 12. As for Palantir, nine Wall Street analysts have a neutral or negative rating on the stock, and only two -- Wedbush and Bank of America Securities -- have positive recommendations on the shares. The average price forecast implies a 25% decline for the stock over the next 12 months. So, Wall Street clearly recommends buying Nvidia over Palantir, and much of this is linked to Palantir's steep valuation. Considering all the points above, Nvidia does stand out as the better buy right now for most AI investors, especially if you're cautious or focus on value. Aggressive investors, though, may still want to add some Palantir to their holdings. The company's earnings continue to march higher, demand is strong, and the AI market is booming -- and all this may create the recipe for a long-term win for Palantir shareholders, even those who buy at today's price.
