Work starts on WA's first eating disorder clinic in Mandurah
Construction has started on the Peel Community Mental Health Service in Greenfields as part of the Peel Health Campus redevelopment. The new $18.1 million facility also includes the Kara Maar Specialist Community Eating Disorder Service (SCEDS). The project will provide outpatient, day and community-based treatment at the purpose-built facility. The facility will deliver adult and older adult mental health services, as well as outreach services for eating disorders. Funded through the Commonwealth's Community Health and Hospitals Program, the Kara Maar clinic will bring together clinicians and support teams in a contemporary, research-backed environment designed to support recovery. Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey said eating disorders were complex and recovery required more than just clinical care. 'This new clinic has been designed with research in mind, which shows that healing spaces are just as important as the treatment itself,' he said. 'Every West Australian deserves access to care that is close to home, compassionate and tailored to their needs. This new clinic is one step closer to helping people get the help they need in one co-ordinated, supportive space. 'This project is part of the Cook Government's broader commitment to investing in health infrastructure that meets the needs of communities now and into the future.' Site works have begun on internal concreting and structural preparations to the existing building, while the next phase will see the internal structural ceiling, wall concreting and perimeter framing begin to define the clinic's internal footprint. The Kara Maar SCEDS clinic will have a dedicated entrance, private consultation and treatment rooms, and spaces designed to support recovery. The name Kara Maar means sustaining hands and was developed in consultation with Noongar elders and community members, symbolising nourishment, support and healing. The building at 50 Montsalvat Drive in Greenfields was originally slated to be a home for a St John urgent care clinic. St John WA was granted $28m from the Department of Health and Aged Care in 2019 to develop urgent care centres in Perth. Centres were opened in Cannington, Midland and Osborne Park, but progress stalled on a fourth location in Mandurah due to a Statewide shortage of general practitioners. The new clinic forms part of the broader Peel Health Campus redevelopment, freeing up space for the main works on site, which will include a new mental health emergency centre; a reconfigured emergency department and additional operating theatre; expanded outpatient and imaging services; additional inpatient beds; additional palliative care hospice beds; and additional chemotherapy places. In 2022, the then-McGowan government said the campus was not the right setting for the clinic. The Federal Government put pressure on the State, giving a mid-2025 deadline to build it at the campus after committing $4m. On Monday, Mandurah MLA Rhys Williams said the specialist facility was a first for the region and an 'important step forward'. 'We know the best outcomes come from a combination of hospital-based acute care and strong community services, and that's exactly what this investment will deliver for our community,' he said. 'This purpose-built clinic is part of our broader commitment to delivering the health services our community needs, now and into the future. It's another step forward in ensuring Mandurah has the facilities, services and care that match the needs of a growing region.'

Quinton Narkle: Fremantle Dockers midfielder makes call to retire with immediate effect
Quinton Narkle has called time on his AFL career, with the midfielder addressing his Fremantle teammates on Tuesday morning of his decision to retire with immediate effect. It comes as the 27-year-old said he was walking away from the game with 'no regrets' after carving out a 59-game career across almost a decade at three different clubs. Narkle made two appearances for the Dockers earlier this year after being picked up in the pre-season supplemental selection period, most recently in the loss to St Kilda in May. 'I've been fortunate to play at Geelong, Port Adelaide and Fremantle, and spend time at Richmond and Essendon. All up, five clubs in three states, and every one of them gave me great experiences,' Narkle said. 'I've been part of some really strong teams that have enjoyed success, and while at times it was hard missing selection or being on the fringe, I have no regrets. 'I've met incredible people at every stop, many who will be lifelong friends.' The West Australian can reveal Narkle stepped away from the club last week to contemplate his future before deciding on the call to hang up the boots. Narkle began his career at Geelong after being taken with pick No.60 in the 2016 draft out of Perth. He played 41 games for the Cats, including eight in Geelong's 2022 premiership campaign, before being delisted at the end of that year. He was then recruited by Port Adelaide in the 2023 mid-season draft after solid form in Essendon's VFL program, playing 16 games for the Power before he was again cut and given a third chance at the Dockers. Narkle and his young family are set to relocate to the Northern Territory. 'Football gave me so much, but the best thing it gave me was meeting my partner Taylah while I was in Melbourne,' Narkle said. 'Now we've got two little girls who are only a year apart, and they've changed my perspective on life completely. 'Taylah and I will most likely move to Darwin, where she's from, and we'd love to raise our girls in a more relaxed lifestyle there. 'I've lived in three states, spent time across five clubs, and ticked off goals I'm proud of. Now it feels like the right time to start the next chapter.'
