Quinton Narkle: Fremantle Dockers midfielder makes call to retire with immediate effect

West Australian19 hours ago
Quinton Narkle has called time on his AFL career, with the midfielder addressing his Fremantle teammates on Tuesday morning of his decision to retire with immediate effect.
It comes as the 27-year-old said he was walking away from the game with 'no regrets' after carving out a 59-game career across almost a decade at three different clubs.
Narkle made two appearances for the Dockers earlier this year after being picked up in the pre-season supplemental selection period, most recently in the loss to St Kilda in May.
'I've been fortunate to play at Geelong, Port Adelaide and Fremantle, and spend time at Richmond and Essendon. All up, five clubs in three states, and every one of them gave me great experiences,' Narkle said.
'I've been part of some really strong teams that have enjoyed success, and while at times it was hard missing selection or being on the fringe, I have no regrets.
'I've met incredible people at every stop, many who will be lifelong friends.'
The West Australian can reveal Narkle stepped away from the club last week to contemplate his future before deciding on the call to hang up the boots.
Narkle began his career at Geelong after being taken with pick No.60 in the 2016 draft out of Perth.
He played 41 games for the Cats, including eight in Geelong's 2022 premiership campaign, before being delisted at the end of that year.
He was then recruited by Port Adelaide in the 2023 mid-season draft after solid form in Essendon's VFL program, playing 16 games for the Power before he was again cut and given a third chance at the Dockers.
Narkle and his young family are set to relocate to the Northern Territory.
'Football gave me so much, but the best thing it gave me was meeting my partner Taylah while I was in Melbourne,' Narkle said.
'Now we've got two little girls who are only a year apart, and they've changed my perspective on life completely.
'Taylah and I will most likely move to Darwin, where she's from, and we'd love to raise our girls in a more relaxed lifestyle there.
'I've lived in three states, spent time across five clubs, and ticked off goals I'm proud of. Now it feels like the right time to start the next chapter.'

Unfiltered: Patrick Dangerfield reveals last conversation with Phil Walsh

Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield has revealed he told Phil Walsh he was leaving Adelaide just hours before the coach was murdered. Dangerfield's eventual departure from the Crows was a key storyline throughout the 2015 season with the gun midfielder out of contract and a free agent. Unfiltered with Hamish McLachlan featuring Patrick Dangerfield, 9.30pm Wednesday following The Front Bar on Seven and 7plus. The move to the Cats was widely expected and it came as no surprise when the two clubs agreed on a deal on the opening day of the trade period. Dangerfield had waited until after the Crows' season ended before publicly announcing his desire to join Geelong, but he had told some key figures already. And one of those was Walsh, just hours before he was tragically murdered by his son Cy. Speaking to Hamish McLachlan on Unfiltered, Dangerfield recounted how it went down. 'The first person I told was Phil Walsh, we had green tea, he was a very big tea man, we caught up, it was a Thursday afternoon,' he said. 'I told him and he said that he would keep it to himself and I felt like I could believe him, he was that sort of guy. 'Ten hours later, David Noble (head of footy) was at the door at 5.30am. 'It was a strange moment in time when you tell the coach and he's not with us the next day. 'I got the front door, nothing good happens at 5.30am, (Noble) said 'pack your stuff and come in, Phil's dead.' 'It's almost easier to talk to because it still doesn't seem real, like it was just out of a movie.' Dangerfield said the next week was a blur as the club dealt with the shock situation. Unfiltered with Hamish McLachlan featuring Patrick Dangerfield, 9.30pm Wednesday following The Front Bar on Seven and 7plus. 'It was one of the toughest weeks I've experienced. Emma Barr, who's our player development manager at the time, she was incredible in keeping the group united in that sense,' he said. 'It was extremely difficult on everyone in the building because we'd had a couple of down years and we were playing some really good footy and there was some solid direction. 'He was ruthless in terms the way of he coached and communicated but he was also a father figure in the way he explained things.' Adelaide's clash against Geelong was cancelled before the Crows headed to Perth for an emotionally charged clash against West Coast Walsh had also spent time at the Eagles and the players locked arms in solidarity in powerful post-match scenes. 'We split the points with the Cats and then we went over to West Coast the following week and that week it was just like the emotional release after that game was enormous,' he said. 'It wasn't closure by any means, but the end of that game and locking arms with the West Coast players ... that was a pretty interesting time. 'We experienced so much in life together, unfortunately we experienced something that no one should have to do deal with it, but we did and we only had each other.'

AFL star Darcy Tucker's $350k St Kilda East property play

Bayside-style living without the bayside price tag has made St Kilda East the perfect match for North Melbourne player Darcy Tucker and his partner Ellie Morish. Tucker, 27, joined North Melbourne in 2023 after 108 games with Fremantle, having been drafted at pick 27 in the 2015 national draft. The versatile defender made his AFL debut in 2016 and has since built a reputation for his consistency, toughness and ability to shut down dangerous opponents. Shock reason two-bed unit had buyers fly in The couple moved into the inner-city suburb after six months of searching, drawn by its unbeatable location and a price tag almost $350,000 lower than neighbouring bayside postcodes and said it's all about location. 'We're right in the middle of everything, a short stroll to Chapel St, High St, some of the best restaurants in Melbourne,' they said. 'The centrality is unbeatable.' Having lived in Albert Park for years, Ellie said she was well aware of the gap in values between St Kilda East and similar suburbs. 'I track the market very closely so I knew exactly what we were stepping into,' she said. 'We bought an architecturally designed Victorian home that's brand new and finished without compromise. 'In Albert Park or Prahran, something similar would be hundreds of thousands more.' For Darcy, the move also made sense from a practical perspective with the drive to Arden St quicker than when the couple was in Albert Park. 'Public transport here is excellent too, when the Metro Tunnel opens, he could even take a train straight across the city if he wanted to Arden.' The pair have quickly settled into the community, with the couple agreeing Alma Park 'the best dog park in Melbourne. 'It's just five minutes from home we also take regular visits to our local favourite The Wall on Carlisle Street for coffee,' Ellie said. 'Darcy's away a lot with football and I've never felt unsafe here. And with Melbourne tipped for a market upswing in the coming years, she expects St Kilda East's time could be soon. 'When Prahran and Armadale get to that point where buyers are priced out, they'll come here,' Ellie said. 'We're a long way off upsizing, but I know when the market catches on, this will be the perfect springboard for our next property.'

Young and Johnson both chances to take on Bulldogs

Gun Fremantle midfielder Hayden Young will face a fitness test on a groin injury on Wednesday as the Dockers prepare for a likely sudden-death clash with the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium. Fellow midfielder Matthew Johnson is also a chance to return to the team from an ankle injury. The pair will test their fitness at Wednesday's main training session. Young has been sidelined with a groin injury since the round 21 win over Carlton, while Johnson has missed four weeks after suffering an ankle injury in the win over Collingwood. 'They (Young and Johnson) completed a game simulation session on the weekend,' Fremantle high performance manager Phil Merriman said. 'Both are looking really good and need to get through training on Wednesday to be available for selection this weekend.' Bringing in both Young and Johnson off injury would be a gamble. Hayden Young. Credit: Michael Wilson / The West Australian The Dockers have already brought several players back from injury in recent weeks. Alex Pearce, Nat Fyfe and Corey Wagner have all returned from lay-offs in the past fortnight. Nat Fyfe played as the sub on Saturday night and Wagner was subbed off. Longmuir said picking players who are fit enough to perform would be a huge call. 'We just have to work through that,' he said. 'We're getting to the end of the season and sometimes there is a bit more risk at this time of the year with that stuff. We won't be playing any of those players if they are underdone and are 50-50. But if they get through training and put their hand up for selection then we will have the discussion.' Fremantle are in the same position as last season, needing to win their last match to play finals despite being a top-four contender during the run home. The Dockers have played finals only one since 2015. The Dockers have already won 15 matches, enough to finish in the top four last season. Defender James Aish will be unavailable after entering concussion protocols that forced him out of Peel Thunder's Round 19 clash. 'Unfortunately for Jimmy, he worked through the week and just got some delayed symptoms with his concussion,' Merriman said. 'He'll be a miss this week and hopefully will be available after the 12-day protocol.'
