UAE grants music management licence as streaming market tipped to hit $2.3bn
The UAE Ministry of Economy granted its second collective music management licence to Music Nation during a ceremony held at its headquarters in Dubai. The licence authorises the organisation to manage the distribution of rights on behalf of music creators and performers, while also ensuring nationwide compliance among music platforms. It comes as the streaming market is tipped to hit $2.3bn by 2030 and musical artists and producers in the region look to monetise works. UAE music management The announcement was made during an event attended by Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Economy, and Dr. Abdulrahman Hassan Al Muaini, Assistant Under-Secretary for Intellectual Property. The Ministry confirmed that the licence was issued in accordance with Federal Decree-Law No. 38 of 2021 concerning copyright and related rights. It marks the continuation of the Ministry's efforts to strengthen intellectual property frameworks in the UAE, following the first collective management licence awarded to the Emirates Music Rights Association in April 2025. Al Saleh said: 'Under the vision of our wise leadership, the UAE has placed strategic emphasis on enhancing the competitiveness of its cultural and creative industries, driving their growth both regionally and globally. 'Recognising their vital role in national economic growth, we are committed to fostering public-private collaboration to cultivate an enabling environment for talent and innovation. 'By elevating the creative economy's legislative framework to world-class standards, we aim to expand the private sector's participation in it, in line with the National Strategy for Cultural and Creative Industries 2031.' The Under-Secretary said: 'The Ministry remains committed to establishing a world-class copyright governance system, drawing on international best practices. We are achieving this through strengthening legal and regulatory frameworks, fostering investment in creative sectors, and implementing robust collective management systems. 'These measures safeguard intellectual property rights while building creators' trust in the nation's creative ecosystem.' 'The collective music management licence serves as a catalyst for cultural innovation while safeguarding artists' intellectual property rights. Through establishing transparent revenue distribution systems and fair compensation mechanisms, it elevates the UAE's music industry – enhancing its global competitiveness and positioning our nation as a premier hub for creative enterprises'. Al Saleh emphasised that awarding the licence to Music Nation marks a strategic milestone in the UAE's commitment to fostering creativity. The initiative unlocks new opportunities for artists, writers, and producers while strengthening rights protection and leveraging creative-economy tools – ultimately positioning the sector as a key driver of national economic growth. Dr. Abdulrahman Hassan Al Muaini said: 'Our music industry is witnessing remarkable growth, fuelled by an expanding ecosystem of creative enterprises and world-class events. Dubai alone boasts 350 live music venues, while the national streaming market generated $841.9m in 2024 – projected to nearly triple to $2.3bn by 2030. 'To sustain this momentum, the Ministry of Economy is prioritising robust legislative frameworks that will further catalyse the creative economy and foster artistic innovation. 'Building on last month's inaugural licence granted to the Emirates Music Rights Association, today marks another significant milestone with the official authorisation of Music Nation. 'We are actively collaborating with local and global partners, including industry associations and legal experts, to share best practices that drive sector growth. 'In tandem, we're expanding awareness initiatives to ensure artists, composers, and producers fully leverage these licences to protect both their creative works and financial interests.' Rasha Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors for Music Nation, said: 'Today marks a pivotal moment for the UAE and Music Nation. After years of careful planning, Music Nation is positioned to become a cornerstone of music licensing, empowering the Emirates' vibrant creative industry. ''As an Emarati, I am honoured to establish a world-class music rights infrastructure that not only elevates local artists to greater heights, but also showcases our rich musical heritage and cultural traditions to the world. 'In partnership with industry leaders BMI and SoundExchange, our cutting-edge technology and services will protect music rights holders and propel the UAE's music economy to new frontiers'.

'This is how you dress at Dubai Mall': Viral post sparks fashion etiquette debate
A viral post by Dubai content creator Jacquelyn May has sparked a discussion on modest fashion etiquette at Dubai Mall, one of the emirate's major tourist draws. The content creator, who uses the social media handle @jacquelynnmayy, shared a video on May 28 in which she is wearing a tradition Emirati Mukhawar dress and saying, 'you see how we show up to Dubai Mall? Very respectful, very put together". She continues by saying that the modest dress is 'not doing the most, just doing it right". She continues to say that this is Dubai Mall and not a 'Victoria's Secret fashion show". The post received widespread approval from Dubai residents, amassing more than 31 thousand likes, including one from Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence. Dubai Mall, one of the largest malls in the world, and one of emirate's most visited spots by tourists and residents, has a list of rules for visitors on its premises and website. When it comes to clothing, Dubai Mall's website states: 'Kindly wear respectful clothing. Shoulders and knees should be covered.' Social media users posted messages of agreement and encouragement under the video, with many thanking Jacquelyn for speaking up about the subject. One comment read, 'As an Emirati: Thank you and to others like you". Another comment read, 'Thank you for this awareness of respect to the tradition and religion of any country we live in". A third comment said, 'We always respect those who respect our cultures". A recent viral post by Egyptian artist and model Helena Shahin, in which she mentioned a Dubai Mall security guard told her to "wear a shirt", sparked dissenting opinions. One user commented, "I personally don't think you have to conform to another culture when you visit a new place as far as how you dress". Since its opening in 2008, Dubai Mall has attracted millions of visitors annually, offering a diverse range of attractions and experiences. In 2023, the mall welcomed a record 105 million visitors, marking a 19 per cent increase from the previous year.

13 of the best ice cream spots in Abu Dhabi
Forget lunch and coffee dates – we want our summer catch-ups to be conducted exclusively over ice cream only. After all, there's no better antidote to temps of 40°C and up than a scoop or two of the cold stuff. Thankfully, the capital spoils us with its choice of ice cream parlours. From authentic gelato Italiano to Emirati-inspired soft serve, these are the best places in the city to satisfy your ice cream cravings. Where to get ice cream in Abu Dhabi Antonia While it's all too easy to feast on Antonia's unreal beef carpaccio, cacio e pepe and sourdough pizza squares until you're full to bursting, believe us when we say that you need to save room for dessert, or more specifically the gelato Italiano. Like everything else on the menu, all the exceptional flavours are made fresh in-house with premium quality ingredients, and they're just as silky and creamy as any you'll find on the streets of Rome. Offering a rotating menu, you'll find pistachio (yes please), coconut, vanilla, gianduja and mixed berry being served up this season, while the ultra-zesty Amalfi lemon and Sorrento orange sorbets are like summer in a bowl. Open daily noon-11pm. Various locations, including Mamsha Al Saadiyat, Saadiyat Island, @ (02 667 2554). Central Abu Dhabi (Credit: Central Abu Dhabi) Filled with old-school arcade machines, games and even a bowling alley, bright, loud and funky Central Abu Dhabi invites you to let loose and enjoy being a big kid for a while. Completing the throwback experience, the choice of different ice cream flavours is truly tremendous, while the classic soft serve vanilla and chocolate keeps many (including yours truly) coming back for more. Or, if you're really in the mood for a sugar hit, the outrageous (and aptly named) monster shakes are just the treat-day blowout you've been looking for. Open Mon-Thu 4pm-midnight, Fri-Sat noon-2am, Sun noon-midnight. Yas Bay, Yas Island, (04 423 8311). Episodes Gelateria (Credit: Episodes Gelateria) Few hotels in the UAE (or even the world), are as opulent as Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental. Covered with glittering gold, crystals and mother of pearl, it's the very definition of palatial decadence. Whether you've got visitors in town or you're just looking for something different to do on the weekend, popping in to admire its jaw-dropping, 72m-tall domed lobby is the perfect summer day out, while stopping for ice cream at Episodes is an essential part of the experience, too. Made with ingredients from the palace's gardens and bee hives, the summer menu stars tempting variations like hazelnut, mango, raspberry, fig ricotta and peach sorbet, while the decorations include whipped cream, fresh fruits, cool branded wafers and – wait for it – 23-karat gold leaf. Well, this is Emirates Palace after all… Open daily 10am-11pm. Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, Corniche Road, @mo_emiratespalace (02 690 7999). The dolce and banana is another winning combination, and we're sure we don't need to explain how wonderfully the raspberry basil and exotic mango passionfruit sorbets go down on a hot summer's day.
