Haryana roadways staffers to go on strike today
Sarbat Singh Punia, vice-president, All India Road Transport Workers Federation, said on Monday that a strike call has been issued to the staff operating all 2,800 government-run buses in Haryana, including Volvo services, to express dissatisfaction over the non-fulfilment of their demands.
Punia, who hails from Haryana, confirmed that various roadways unions will be participating in the larger nationwide agitation. 'We have urged the employees not to run the buses from 4 am on Tuesday till midnight (12 am),' he said.
Subhash Lamba, president of All India State Government Employees Federation said: 'Employees of various departments and workers working in the industrial sector will also be on strike on July 9 on the call of federations of central trade unions and employee unions'.
The employee unions have been criticising the 'delay' in notifying the Eighth Pay Commission, despite earlier announcements. Lamba also flagged other long-pending demands including the restoration of the old pension scheme, regularisation of contract workers, and filling vacant posts through permanent recruitment.
Additionally, Lamba declared resistance to the four labour codes notified by the central government, which he described as a 'document of slavery of workers'. The Centre had earlier notified four labour codes — The Code on Wages, 2019; The Industrial Relations Code, 2020; The Code on Social Security, 2020; and The OSH Code, 2020 — to replace 29 sets of labour laws.

All India Road Transport Workers Federation's National Conference tomorrow
Thiruvananthapuram, July 28 (UNI) The 12th National Conference of the All India Road Transport Workers Federation (AIRTWF) will begin here tomorrow with a massive rally involving over 25,000 workers and a public meeting. Tapan Sen, National Secretary of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), will inaugurate the Conference, which will be attended by around 650 delegates from 28 states across India. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the public meeting, which will be presided over by AIRTWF Working Chairman and MLA Kadakampally Surendran, National General Secretary R. Lakshmaiah said. The conference will deliberate on several key issues, including the challenges faced by transport workers, with the participation of prominent national leaders. Rahul speaks to girl's father, assures Cong stands with family
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday spoke to the father of the Balasore girl who self-immolated on college premises on Saturday over alleged inaction against her sexual harassment complaint against a faculty member. The leader of opposition in Lok Sabha assured the girl's father that he would be with the family members in their fight for justice. Rahul wrote in an X post, "Spoke with the father of the brave daughter who lost her life in the fight for justice in Odisha's Balasore. In his voice, I could feel the pain, dreams, and struggles of his daughter. Assured him that the Congress party and I stand with them at every step. What happened is not only inhumane and shameful but also a wound to the entire society. We will ensure that the victim's family receives full justice." When asked, the father of the girl said, "Rahul Gandhi told me that he will be with me in this fight seeking justice for my daughter. He said the whole country is with my family. The Congress leader also said that he will do whatever he can." In a related development, Congress on Wednesday announced a plan to gherao Parliament during the upcoming monsoon session, beginning July 21, over the Balasore girl's death. Launching an attack on the Odisha govt, All India Mahila Congress president Alka Lamba demanded the resignation of chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi and the imposition of President's rule in the state. Lamba, in a press conference at Congress Bhawan here, said Rahul expressed outrage on the girl's suicide. He also spoke to the girl's family members on Wednesday morning, she added. Lamba said Odisha has become a death trap for women. "The issue of atrocities against women in Odisha has shaken the entire country. Crime against women increased in nine BJP-ruled states, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha. In Odisha, the police are hesitant to take action due to rising political interference and pressure," Lamba said. She claimed the govt could have prevented these crimes if it wanted to, but did nothing. BJP state vice-president Biranchi Narayan Tripathy said BJD and Congress have crossed all limits of insensitivity and are indulging in petty politics on the issue.

Elaborate security arrangements in place for bandh today
Bhubaneswar: Police have made elaborate security arrangements across the state, especially in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, in view of the 12-hour Odisha bandh called by Congress and seven other organisations on Thursday, seeking a fair probe into the self-immolation of a 20-year-old student in Balasore. Speaking to media persons, police commissioner S Dev Dutta Singh said, "We will not allow any kind of violence or untoward incident during the bandh. Political parties have the liberty to protest in a democracy, but our top priority remain the safety of the public." Commissionerate police plans to deploy AI-based surveillance drone cameras to monitor the movement of the protesters. Additional arrangements are also being made to guard key govt installations such as Lok Seva Bhawan, AG office, and offices and residences of key ministers and officials. Looking at the growing tensions and the protest by BJD on Wednesday in Bhubaneswar which turned violent, police are taking extra caution, sources said. The home department has issued an advisory for govt employees to reach their offices before 9:30am positively. On the day, visitors will not be allowed at Lok Seva Bhawan while checks of ID cards of the employees will be intensified, the advisory added. Earlier, state Congress president Bhakta Charan Das said that as part of the bandh, all schools, colleges, universities and vehicular movements would be stopped. He said they had urged the transport unions, employees' federations, traders' unions, and people to cooperate in the protest for safeguarding democracy and ensuring women's safety.
