Ricky Gervais Working On New Netflix Project With ‘After Life' Co-Stars
Ricky Gervais said he's partnering with some of his After Life and Derek co-stars for a new animated project at Netflix.
The standup comedy great and BAFTA- and Emmy-winning writer-director-actor mentioned the project during a livestream on X on Sunday when a viewer asked if he'd be working with actor David Earl again in a drama/comedy. Earl was a series regular in Gervais' After Life and Derek, and also appeared in an episode of Extras.
'I am. I'm doing something with him at the moment,' Gervais said. 'In fact, half the gang from After Life and Derek [are in it]. I'm working with David Earl, Diane Morgan, Kerry Godliman, Tom Basden, Jo Hartley … Andrew Brook, Tony Way — they're all voices in a new animation [project]. I'm still working on it for Netflix.'
Gervais wrote, directed and starred in all three seasons of After Life as Tony, a writer for the newspaper the Tambury Gazette in the fictional English village of Tambury. Throughout the series, Tony struggles with the loss of his wife, Lisa (Godliman), to breast cancer as he revisits their home movies together on his laptop.
Earl played Brian in After Life, a lonesome loser who wants to be featured in Tambury Gazette, while Morgan and Way play Tony's co-workers Kath and Lenny.
Basden also stars as Tony's boss and brother-in-law Tom, who is Lisa's brother. Hartley plays Lenny's girlfriend, June, while Brook plays an obnoxious podcaster named Ratty.
During his livestream on X on Sunday, Ricky Gervais didn't give any more details about his upcoming animated project for Netflix, nor did he reveal if it was a film or a series. Gervais did note, however, how long the process for an animated project could stretch out.
'I found some of the original sketches that I did from like September of 2023,' Gervais said, adding, 'It's mental. It takes so long.'
Gervais, who famously torched several celebrity egos while hosting the 2020 Golden Globes also said of the animated project, 'It's good. It's different.' He also noted to the user who asked the question that he couldn't speak any further of what it was about.
Meanwhile, Gervais, who is no stranger to voice acting, is connected to the upcoming Illumination Entertainment animated comedy adventure Flanimals.
Gervais is listed on IMDb as one of the writers of Flanimals, along with Matt Selman (The Simpsons) and Rob Steen. IMDb only lists Illumination — the animated studio behind the Despicable Me/Minions franchise — as the producer of Flanimals, so it's unlikely the Netflix project that Gervais was talking about in his livestream.
Per IMDb, the logline for Flanimals reads, 'Fifty species of creatures are so ugly and misshapen they become cute and endearing. One of these creatures, a pudgy, perspiring purple creature, goes on a mission to change the world.'
While fans are awaiting Ricky Gervais' new animated Netflix project, they can stream all three seasons of After Life on the platform as well as Derek's two seasons. Gervais' standup comedy specials Armageddon, Supernature and Humanity are also streaming on Netflix.

Dolly Parton Reveals Her Plans to "Rub Elbows" With the Royal Family This Fall—and a Special Invite for George, Charlotte and Louis
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Dolly Parton might have turned down an invitation to have tea with Princess Kate in 2023, but she's not about to make that mistake twice. In a new interview with the Huffington Post, the country superstar was asked if she'd ever collaborate with fellow cooking enthusiast Meghan Markle—and in the process, revealed that she has plans for a different royal meeting later this year. Parton, who has launched her own line of frozen meals and baking mixes, was told she was "American royalty" in the interview. When a potential guest spot on the Duchess of Susex's Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, was mentioned, Parton replied, "Well, never say never. You never know where you're gonna go." However, she casually dropped some royal news in the next sentence, adding, "In fact, I'm going to go to England in October, and I'm going to actually, hopefully, get to have tea with The Queen." While a meetup with Queen Camilla might sound slightly random, it makes perfect sense for Parton, who serves a champion for children's literacy just like Camilla, who founded The Queen's Reading Room charity. The "I Will Always Love You" singer's organization, the Imagination Library, has donated more than 200 million books to children since its inception in 1995. In 2007, the charity expanded to the United Kingdom. "I think they're involved a lot with our Imagination Library there," Parton said of the U.K. "So I'm going to go over there and kind of really rub elbows with the royalty. So yes, anything is possible. I never say no to anything." As for her meeting with Princess Kate, Parton—whose promotional schedule was too tight to have tea with the Princess of Wales in 2023—said she's up for it now. "I don't know if that offer still stands, but if she wants me and I'm there, I'll be right there with tea bag in hand,' the "9 to 5" singer said. And if not, she's more than ready to host Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis (and their parents) at Dollywood. "They're all invited. We would love to have them at Dollywood, and if they decide their schedule ever permits that, well, then we will go all out to try to make it a royal treat for them," Parton said.

King Charles Just Revealed He's a Swiftie by Dropping the Perfect Taylor Swift Reference in His Latest Instagram Post
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It's no secret that several members of the Royal Family are huge Taylor Swift fans. Just last year, Prince William took Prince George and Princess Charlotte—but not Prince Louis—to the Eras Tour in London, with the group posing for a selfie with Swift backstage. After reports suggested Princess Charlotte is the biggest Swiftie in the Royal Family, King Charles seems to be trying to steal her crown by making a reference to the pop star in a new social media post. "Shoreditch in the afternoon! ☔️," a post on the Royal Family's Instagram post started, quoting Swift's song "London Boy" from the Lover album. The song also provided the soundtrack for the video montage, which showed clips from King Charles's visit to an event in Shoreditch in London. Fans were understandably delighted by the reference to Swift's "London Boy" lyrics. "His grandkids love Taylor Swift, I guess so does His Majesty," one commenter wrote on Instagram. "This song choice is giving me life coming from an official royal account," another person said. The rest of the caption explained, "Hosted for the first time in Europe, The King has visited @SXSWLondon, a culture, technology and creativity festival in Shoreditch, East London." The caption continued, "Originating in Austin, Texas, the festival aims to serve as a platform to showcase the future of the creative industries, supporting emerging artists and innovative projects. Before departing, His Majesty popped into Old Spitalfields Market to meet locals and speak to stallholders working the market's 'Antiques Thursday.'" Swift's "London Boy" references her romance with ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, who lives in the city. Alwyn addressed his 2023 breakup from the singer during an interview with The Guardian. "I have tried just to focus on controlling what I can control," the actor explained. "And, right from the beginning, tried to focus on the things that are meaningful for me: friends, family, work, of course. So noise outside of that, I think I've done what lots of people who find themselves in the public eye do, which is just try and ignore it."

Dua Lipa's Engagement Ring Has the Most Romantic Backstory—and a Valuation to Match
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. After months of wondering, "Is she, isn't she?," Dua Lipa has finally confirmed she's engaged. That's right, the diamond band she's teased on Instagram since December is, in fact, an engagement ring from her fiancé, Callum Turner. 'Yeah, we're engaged,' she told British Vogue in her cover interview, which dropped on June 12. "It's very exciting. This decision to grow old together, to see a life and just, I don't know, be best friends forever—it's a really special feeling." According to Lipa, Turner custom-made the diamond ring for her, with guidance from her close friends and sister, Rina. "It's so me. It's nice to know the person that you're going to spend the rest of your life with knows you very well," the newly-engaged star shared. She's a longtime brand ambassador for Tiffany & Co., but at press time, it's unclear which designer Turner worked with. There's also debate over its exact weight and size. Laura Suttie, Senior Gemologist and Ring Expert at Queensmith identifies the ring as a "2-carat round diamond paired with an approximately 5mm 18k yellow gold band." Meanwhile, Laura Taylor, engagement ring specialist at Lorel Diamonds, appraised it at somewhere between 3- and 4-carats. Regardless of the exact stats, the unconventional style felt so on-brand for her. If you keep tabs on Lipa's various IG dumps, you know her (no-longer-rumored) engagement ring perfectly aligns with the rest of her jewelry. She's a devoted gold girl, after all. Whether she's on-stage or on vacation, Lipa hardly goes anywhere without oversized bracelets, a signature necklace stack, and mismatched rings, usually from Tiffany & Co. With that said, Suttie believes her newest addition could inspire a wave of chunky engagement rings. "Thicker bands are a bit of a flex—they're often chosen to support larger diamonds or gemstones while maintaining the ring's structural integrity," Suttie said in a statement. "If lab-grown, it could be valued at approximately $6,000, while a natural diamond would bring the value closer to $47,000." Lipa's verification via Vogue comes seven months after she first sported the rock on that finger. In true Lipa form, the custom design made its IG debut in a Christmas Eve photo dump. Alongside Moon Boots, a leather bomber jacket, and reindeer antlers, eagle-eye fans spotted the bold band. To be fair, at 2-carats, it would be harder not to pinpoint it. Since then, the ring has been her most consistent co-star on IG. On May 5, it also joined her at the 2025 Met Gala. The bride-to-be went full gothic glam in a custom black Chanel gown. As she ascended the iconic staircase, all eyes went to her engagement ring, which she layered overtop bedazzled mesh opera gloves. Then, on May 27, she went full bridal mode in a white wedding-ready dress from Jacquemus, with her ring front-and-center. All this to say? She's embracing this new era to the fullest. As for the actual nuptials, it seems Lipa and Turner have taken a page out of Zendaya and Tom Holland's book of pre-wedding press. "I want to finish my tour, Callum's shooting, so we're just enjoying this period,' she told British Vogue. 'I've never been someone who's really thought about a wedding, or dreamt about what kind of bride I would be. All of a sudden I'm like: 'Oh, what would I wear?'' Now that her secret's out, it's only a matter of time before she wears white again. Who knows? Maybe she'll team up with Chanel for her wedding wardrobe à la Sofia Richie Grainge. It wouldn't be out of the question for the brand ambassador.
