3 teen boys charged in series of smash-and-grab jewelry store robberies in Peel region

Peel police have charged three teens in connection with three smash-and-grab jewelry store robberies that happened earlier this year. The robberies happened at shopping malls in Mississauga and Brampton between Jan. 19 and Feb. 4, 2025, Peel police said in a news release Thursday. Two occurred in Mississauga and one occurred in Brampton. In all three robberies, the suspects rushed into the jewelry store armed with hammers and pry bars, smashed glass displays and removed merchandise inside "with no regard for the safety of customers or employees," the news release says. The suspects then fled using a stolen car. Peel police said Thursday they've now arrested and charged a 16-year-old boy from Toronto, a 17-year-old boy from Nova Scotia, and a 16-year-boy from Kitchener in connection with these robberies. The 16-year-old from Kitchener is charged with three counts of robbery, while the 17-year-old from Nova Scotia is charged with two counts of robbery and the 16-year-old from Toronto is charged with one count of robbery, among other charges, the release says.

Heartbreaking tribute to new dad and police officer found dead at nature reserve

Thousands have been raised and a heartfelt tribute has been paid following the death of a much-loved dad and police officer. Charlie Mitchell, aged 26, was off duty when he was reported missing from home in Leeds on Saturday night (June 21) with concerns for his welfare. Officers had been carrying out a search of St Aidan's Nature Reserve when they then tragically found his body at about 5.30pm the following day. His family, including his partner with a young baby, were informed and are being supported by specialist officers. Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE PC Mitchell was a Patrol officer based at Halifax, West Yorkshire Police said. There are no suspicious circumstances surround his death, with a file being prepared for the coroner. A fundraiser, set up by James Cichorz has since raised over £16,000 to support Charlie's family following his sudden death and the mum of his baby boy. Donations can be made here. A tribute on the page read: "Charlie was not only a dedicated police officer, but also a loving partner to Brooklyn and a proud new father to their beautiful baby boy. "Just recently, Brooklyn—who also serves with West Yorkshire Police in the Safeguarding team—welcomed their son into the world. What should have been a time of joy and new beginnings has now been overshadowed by unimaginable grief. "Brooklyn is now facing something no one should have to: the loss of her partner and the father of her child, while stepping into motherhood alone. Though I know her policing family will continue to surround her with love and support, I wanted to do something to help ease, even slightly, the road ahead. "I've set up a GoFundMe to support Brooklyn and her baby through this incredibly difficult time. The funds raised will help give them a little breathing room—whether that's to help with everyday costs, time off work, or simply space to grieve and begin to heal. "If you're able to give, please do. And if you can't, even sharing this message means so much. Thank you for keeping Brooklyn, their baby boy and all who loved Charlie in your thoughts." The police union, the Federation, which represents officers in the area, said it is 'devastated' by PC Mitchell's death. Craig Nicholls, chairman, said: "We offer our sincerest condolences to Charlie's family, friends and close colleagues at this tragic time and will be offering them all the support we can." --- Day in day out, our reporters in the Manchester Evening News newsroom bring you remarkable stories from all aspects of Mancunian life. Toronto councillor wants speed cameras shut off until September

A Toronto councillor said he wants the city's speed camera program put on hold and is vowing to prompt a vote on the matter at Thursday's council meeting. Humber River-Black Creek Coun. Anthony Perruzza called the cameras "speed traps" in a news release and said he wants them shut off until September so city staff can review Toronto's approach to slowing down motorists. His appeal comes three months after the city doubled the number of automated speed cameras it uses to 150. The system launched in the summer of 2020, under former Mayor John Tory, with the goal of slowing down drivers in community safety zones, such as on roads next to schools, and areas where there have been serious collisions. Perruzza, without providing supporting evidence, said in a news release the cameras have "no meaningful impact." Perruzza's bid to pause the speed camera system comes weeks after Vaughan's city council opted to do just that after drivers there racked up more than 30,000 tickets in three weeks. Perruzza said he's heard from plenty of frustrated drivers in his ward. "Often, drivers are unaware that this camera exists here, and responsible drivers are ticketed despite traveling at speeds close to the posted limits," he said, leaving them feeling "unfairly penalized." The city always posts signs 90 days ahead of a speed camera being installed, and keeps signage in place where they are running. It also maintains a map of the speed camera locations. By the end of 2022, the city had collected some $34 million in fines from speeding drivers caught on camera. This March, Transportation Services head Barbara Gray maintained the program isn't focused on bringing in revenue. "If the cameras generated no revenue, that would be best, because that would mean that people weren't speeding," she said.
