Truro City's rise can be 'bigger than Wrexham's'

BBC Newsa day ago
Truro City owner Eric Perez says his club's rise could be "even more special" than that of Wrexham. The Canadian and his Ontario Inc consortium took over the club in November 2023 and oversaw them winning National League South in their first full season in control. They are the first club to have significant Canadian ownership in the fifth tier since Wrexham, who are co-owned by Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds. Under his and fellow Hollywood star Rob McElhenney's ownership, Wrexham have won promotions from the National League to the Championship - helped by their television series Welcome to Wrexham and the commercial appeal their star status has brought the club."I think what we're doing is even more special than what they've done," Perez told BBC Radio Cornwall when asked about the two clubs."There are at the end of the day five league clubs from Wales, there's only one club in Cornwall that's even close to the Football League, and if we could get there, it would be something that would change Cornwall forever."It would weave a patch into the cultural tapestry of a place that has been alive and vibrant for 3,000 years."To be able to do something like that is, to me, what life is all about, so I actually feel like this is bigger than Wrexham could ever be."
Having seen the club win National League South, Perez and his backers have helped Truro become Cornwall's first-ever fully professional football team. They have also had to speed up work to expand their new stadium on the outskirts of the city, which was only built a year ago, extending stands on two sides of the ground and improving other facilities. The work will culminate on Saturday when the club host the first ever fifth-tier game to be played in Cornwall when the Tinners host York City. "It's just been such a journey," said Perez, who previously owned the Cornwall rugby league side and had ties with Toronto Wolfpack. "I remember when we first took over the club and we set out some goals, no-one really paid attention."I think everyone's paying attention now, because we are really on the cusp of something huge here playing our first home National League match."It's been a super hectic off-season. First of all, we've had a stadium renovation that we've done, building a new main stand to accommodate what is now the requirements for this league."Then obviously transitioning the club from hybrid to full-time professional, that's been massive."So it's been a hectic off-season to say the least, but I think we're prepared and we're ready to put our best foot forward for the Duchy."Truro's start to the season has been keenly awaited by many in football as the first-ever Cornish side to play in a nationwide league. Among the many well-wishers was the Prince of Wales, who in his capacity as Duke of Cornwall wrote to the club to send them his best wishes for the new season. The Tinners lost their first game 2-0 away at Wealdstone last week, and while Perez is excited, he is also realistic about his side's title chances, although he still has ambitions for the seasons to come.He said: "When we took over the club, our goal was to stick in National League South and then see what we could do the following season, and what we did was we won the league."So I think it's similar this way as our goal is to try and stay in the National League, cement our place in it and then who knows what could happen the year after that."

Scotland's hidden gem: why Knockhill is one of the world's best race tracks

Amid a sea of better-appreciated and well-appointed UK race tracks, Knockhill has a knack for holding its own. It is Scotland's only FIA-approved track and is notorious for its narrow, complicated and steeply undulating twists and turns – and this coming weekend, it will host the seventh round of this season's BTCC. I can't wait. I think of it as the UK's Laguna Seca: one of its corners, Duffus Dip, has a sharp downward gradient much like the Californian track's Corkscrew. If you've never driven on it before, you will begin each lap with blind faith before negotiating the steep, unforgiving kerbs and tight turns that can make or break victory. It has taken a while to get here. Back in the early 1970s, a sheep farmer called Tom Kinnaird had a bold vision for a race track – and a digger in his shed. He carved out what would become Scotland's answer to the Nürburgring or Spa-Francorchamps, albeit on a slightly smaller scale. The circuit complex would be made up of old farm service roads and a disused mineral railway that closed in the early 1950s. By 1974, there lay a snaking, undulating ribbon of asphalt that dips and rises by around 60 metres from the track's highest point to its lowest. The first race was held in 1975 and, thanks to a large catchment area that includes both Edinburgh and Glasgow, it proved as popular as it was profitable. By the time it was inaugurated into the BTCC calendar in 1992, Knockhill had become one of Britain's best-known race tracks. I grew up watching BTCC racers there with my dad. It's where I learned to appreciate the skill required for drivers to pound round at the limit, and it's where I found out anyone could drive their car on a track – whether it was a new BMW M5 or a ratty Renault Clio. It's also where I got a first taste of on-track driving and the techniques required to do so, from left-foot braking to the trusty heel-and-toe gearshift.

Peter Andre returns to social media with telling family snap after being slammed by ex Katie Price

PETER Andre has returned to social media with a VERY telling family snap, after being slammed by Katie Price. It came not long after his ex-wife Katie, 47, publicly hit out at the dad of two of her children and branded him a "fake saint". 6 6 6 The battle of the exes hit it's peak this week when Peter, 52, posted a statement on behalf of his family saying, "this ends today". In retaliation, Katie then shared her own social media post last night, where she was clearly taking a swipe at the Mysterious Girl singer. Now, in his first post since he released his bombshell statement about the on-going feud with Katie, Peter shared a sweet family photo on his latest Instagram Story. In the picture, the singer along with wife Emily and the three kids they share together, could be see standing united. They had their backs to the camera, and they were seen walking along the beach holding hands, as a show of solidarity. Pete simply wrote "Cyprus" over the photo. Peter's return to social media came after he addressed the on-going feud between his family and Katie. Tension has been high between the pair, as Katie blames her ex for a rift between her and Princess, 52. Pricey claims she was "banned" by Peter from appearing in her daughter's reality show, The Princess Diaries. On Thursday, the dad-of-five released a statement about his ex-wife saying he'd "stayed silent" for 16 years since their split in 2009. Princess Andre breaks silence on Peter and Katie's bitter feud after his blistering statement Pete said he chose to speak out now after Katie claimed she was being frozen out of Princess' burgeoning TV career. "The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight," Pete wrote in the letter published on social media. "For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood." Pete concluded: "Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations that I have yet to address. Those will be dealt with in the coming months." 6 KATIE BITE'S BACK Katie then responded yesterday with her own statement. Although she didn't mention Peter by name in her post, it was clearly taking a swipe at her ex following their public fallout. She wrote: "Saints and Sinners. As we know, in this life we are thought of as Saints and Sinners. "I know I will always be seen as a Sinner. That's fair, I allowed myself to fall into a reliance on drugs and alcohol. At times I was not the mother I should have been while I struggled with mental illness. Peter Andre's statement in full Peter hit back after Katie's claims on her recent podcast that she was being frozen out of Princess's career - despite Princess living with her. Peter wrote on Instagram: "For sixteen years I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silence has been incredibly frustrating. "That ends today. "The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight. "For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood. "In 2019, the family courts issued a legally binding order to enforce this arrangement. I have never made this public before out of respect for my children." "In 2011 and 2015, publicly documented court cases found my ex wife had made false claims. She was ordered to pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise, to me and my management. "The same falsehoods are being repeated today." "Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations that I have yet to address. Those will be dealt with in the coming months." His statement came just hours after Katie claimed that Princess was living with her on her latest podcast. She said: "I've missed out so much with Princess. I haven't watched the show, but, people have told me how proud I should be of the kids and how they Princess does talk highly of me all the way through it so although I'm not in the show she speaks about me all the time which is really sweet. "But why wouldn't she, because she lives with me. And this is another thing I need to clear up, the kids have never lived just with Pete, we've shared the kids." "I have been at times a poor friend, an awful sibling, and an untrustworthy partner. I've self-medicated, been unfaithful, damaged myself and those that I love." The lengthy post continued and then, in a clear swipe at Pete, she wrote: "Some Saints are fake. They play the victim and to succeed in life they need a at least a Sinner. Without the Sinner they don't get to be the Saint... Katie added: "As a Sinner - I sometimes get bored of these Saints." After meeting on I'm A Celebrity in 2004, Peter and Katie had a whirlwind romance which saw them wed the following year, but were divorced by 2009. The couple share kids Junior, 20, and Princess, 18, PRINCESS SPEAKS OUT It was not just the famous exes who were sharing their thoughts in public. Daughter Princess also spoke out about the rift between her parent s. The teenager took to Snapchat for a candid Q&A with her followers yesterday, When one fan asked: 'Does it affect you even now when your mum and dad don't get on?', Princess responded with a short video message. 'To be honest it doesn't affect me. At the end of the day, they broke up when I was two years old so I don't even have any memory of them being together,' she said. Over the top of the clip, Princess wrote: 'I love my mum and dad and that's all that matters.'
