Independence Day turns into 5-day vacay
The Independence Day long weekend is almost here and you might notice a trend among your colleagues: a sudden surge in pre-emptive sick leave requests, starting Wednesday. It's a sure sign that for many, this isn't just a small break, but the launchpad for a getaway! With Independence Day falling on a Friday, taking just two additional days off can give you a five-day vacation.
Travel aggregators and hotel chains are already reporting a surge in bookings across popular destinations during this period. As travellers embrace the idea of mini-vacays, places like Goa, Puducherry, Udaipur, and Ooty are seeing a significant uptick in weekend travellers.
'TRAVEL DEMANDS APPEAR TO BE PEAKING TWO DAYS PRIOR TO INDEPENDENCE DAY'
Rajesh Magow, Co-founder and Group CEO, MakeMyTrip, shares, 'Independence Day has emerged as a key travel occasion over the years. This year too, the search and booking trends point to strong intent to travel over the Independence Day weekend.
While the majority of bookings typically happen in the last 7-10 days, we are already seeing momentum, with Rakhi and Independence Day falling within a week of each other. Travel demand appears to be peaking two days earlier, on Wednesday, August 13, giving early travellers a five-day window.' According to EaseMyTrip, travel bookings have risen by 11–12% compared to last year. Rikant Pittie, CEO and Co-Founder, EaseMyTrip, explains, 'We're seeing strong travel momentum around this Independence Day long weekend.

He explains that the demand is strong across both metro and non-metro cities. Goa, in particular, has seen a surge in demand for beach getaways, pushing airfares to Goa from Delhi and Mumbai up by over 100% week-on-week. Scenic spots such as Dehradun, Kannur, Udaipur, Coimbatore, among others are also seeing strong momentum, with fares rising 10-15% YoY on average during the holiday weekend.

Nashik civic body's city bus service records highest-ever daily income of Rs 44 lakh in ticket sales
Nashik: The Nashik Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd, the transport wing of the Nashik Municipal Corporation, recorded an income of Rs 44 lakh on Aug 12 (Monday) through the sale of tickets, marking the highest daily income since operations began in July 2021. Over 1.1 lakh passengers travelled by city buses on Aug 12, which was the third Monday of the Shravan month. The previous highest daily earning was Rs 35.4 lakh, recorded on Sept 4, 2023, during the Shravan month that year. The third Shravan Somwar is a major event that attracts hundreds of thousands of devotees to Trimbakeshwar, home to one of India's 12 Jyotirlingas. Pilgrims from across the country visit the temple and take a holy dip in the Kushawarta kund. "We deployed more buses on the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar route on the occasion of the third Shravan Somwar on Aug 12, and all the buses that ran on the route were fully occupied. This is the reason the city bus service recorded the highest daily earnings through the sale of tickets with a footfall of 1.14 lakh passengers," said Pradeep Chaudhari, the additional commissioner of NMC and CEO of the NMPML. NMC took over the city bus service from the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) on July 8, 2021, deploying 27 buses on 11 routes with an initial footfall of 5,000 passengers per day and an average daily income of Rs 1.3lakh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo There has been a significant rise in passenger occupancy over the past four years. The footfall has reached an average of 70,000 passengers per day, and income has increased to an average of Rs 21 lakh per day, according to NMC officials. Most commuters regularly use the city bus service, with some opting for buses over personal vehicles to reach their workplaces. Additionally, the number of students obtaining bus passes at concessional rates has risen in recent months. NMPML operates a total of 250 buses across the city through two private agencies on a procure, operate, and maintain basis. In addition to 60 routes, NMC operates city buses in rural areas such as Trimbakeshwar, Pimpalgaon, Sinnar, Ozar, Sayyad Pimpri, Mohadi, Saikheda, and other nearby rural destinations, covering nearly 27 bus terminals, two bus depots, and 1,440 bus stops in both urban and nearby rural areas. Passenger on India debut: I would love to work in a Bollywood film
Though he's visited India quite a few times as a tourist, his week-long sojourn this November is extra special. Passenger aka Mike Rosenberg is looking forward to marking his music debut in India with a three-city tour. 'India has always been close to my heart. I've been to Kerala so many times and the place is magical. But I never got a chance to travel to other parts of the country. During my week-long musical trip to India, I wish to soak in the magic and culture of the beautiful place,' says the multi-award-winning English singer-songwriter, who will be performing Passenger India 2025 across Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. The tour has been produced and promoted by Bookmyshow Live. Passenger(Photo: Instagram) As he speaks to us from the UK, he admits that he's aware of the kind of love his music receives in India. 'Thanks to social media and other music platforms, I get to gauge the love Indians shower on me and my music. Since I'm a lot into indie folk, I know Indians resonate with that kind of work. I can't wait to take the stage and offer all that I have to my fans during my India tour. I want my concerts to be the best Indians have seen. People spend money and invest so much time and emotions in attending a concert, and I make sure I make my gigs interactive so that they feel a part of it,' says Passenger. The 41-year-old, who calls himself 'lazy' when it comes to educating himself with music from other countries, says he's aware of the kind of popularity Indian musicians such as AR Rahman command globally, and he hopes to learn more about such artistes and their works. The singer, best-known for his chartbuster Let Her Go, shares, 'I would love to work in a Bollywood film. Though my trip is really packed, I hope to catch up with some artistes and explore the possibility of collab. I feel I can connect with Indian audiences, as the themes for my music - love, loss and introspection- are something Indians resonate with.'
