(Reuters) -Olympic 100m bronze medallist Melissa Jefferson-Wood clocked 21.99 seconds in the women's 200m at the Grand Slam Track meet in Philadelphia on Saturday, edging Olympic 200m gold medallist Gabby Thomas at Franklin Field.
Jefferson-Wood, who usually specialises in shorter sprints, said her 200m training paid off after a third-place finish in Miami earlier this month.
"I've been training for it, I told myself what happened in Miami wasn't going to happen again," she said.
Jamaica's Ackera Nugent won the women's 100m hurdles in 12.44 seconds, while Kenya's Agnes Jebet Ngetich claimed the 1500m title in 3:58.04.
Dominican Marileidy Paulino recorded 49.12 seconds to win the women's 400m long hurdles, while Briton Matthew Hudson-Smith took the men's 400m event in 44.51.
Canada's Marco Arop claimed victory in the men's 800m in 1:43.48 – his third win in the event at Grand Slam races.
Arop, who won world championship gold in 2023 and Olympic silver in 2024, pulled away from American Josh Hoey, who finished second in 1:44.41, and is set to run the 1,500m on Sunday.
"It felt great, the crowd, look at this! It's easy to run fast in a stadium like this so I had to put on a show for them," Arop told TNT Sports.
Also in the men's events, Kenny Bednarek recorded 19.95 seconds for the 200m while Brazilian Alison dos Santos remained undefeated after winning the men's 400m hurdles in 48.11 seconds.
Competitors take part in two races over 12 events, with overall points totals deciding group champions on Sunday.

Soccer-Nmecha penalty gets Leeds up and running on Premier League return
Soccer Football - Premier League - Leeds United v Everton - Elland Road, Leeds, Britain - August 18, 2025 Leeds United's Lukas Nmecha scores their first goal from the penalty spot Action Images via Reuters/Craig Brough LEEDS, England (Reuters) -A late penalty from new signing Lukas Nmecha earned promoted Leeds United a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Everton in their first match back in the Premier League on Monday night. Leeds dominated the first half in front of a raucous Elland Road crowd, but wasted a host of chances to break the deadlock. Everton, on the other hand, did not muster a single shot, on or off target, in the opening period. The visitors brought on close season arrival Jack Grealish as they improved after the break, but James Tarkowski's handball gave the hosts the opportunity to snatch victory six minutes from time. Nmecha, a free transfer ahead of the new campaign, stepped off the bench to emphatically convert from the spot, ensuring Leeds, back in the top flight after a two-year absence, got their season off to the perfect start. 'Even Ronaldo shows up for his country…'
KUALA LUMPUR: Former World No. 1 Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei has urged both BA of Malaysia (BAM) and independent shuttlers to put national pride above all else in the country's mission to build a formidable squad for the 2026 Thomas Cup campaign. Chong Wei stressed that success could only be achieved if every player showed full commitment and strong team spirit throughout preparations. "The Thomas Cup is a team tournament, you win together, you lose together. If a player is called up to camp, they must give their full cooperation. If not, we will have no choice but to drop them. "We must be professional. Look at Cristiano Ronaldo — he still gives everything every time he is called up to represent his country," said Chong Wei, who was appointed as a BAM council member on Saturday. Malaysia last lifted the Thomas Cup in 1992 in Kuala Lumpur and have since finished runners-up four times — in 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2014. Assessing the current squad, Chong Wei admitted the men's singles remain fragile but believes the right tactical approach could tilt the balance. He highlighted that the country's four key singles players — Lee Zii Jia, Leong Jun Hao, Ng Tze Yong and Justin Hoh — must be fully utilised. "Our singles are a bit weak at the moment. Zii Jia has only just recovered from injury while Tze Yong is still in rehab after knee surgery. "But if they are all fit, we have four singles players who can be deployed tactically. "Right now, we don't know if Zii Jia will play first singles or if Tze Yong will slot in as second or third. Planning will be crucial," he said. On doubles, Chong Wei was more upbeat, noting Malaysia's strength with three pairs ranked in the world's top 10, led by world No 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, No 3 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and No 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun. On Saturday, BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz launched the Road to Thomas Cup 2026 programme as part of the wider Tangkis 2030 strategic plan. The key targets include winning the 2026 Thomas Cup, delivering Malaysia's first Olympic badminton gold at the Los Angeles 2028 Games and ensuring Malaysian players are ranked World No. 1 in at least three events. Chong Wei described the initiative as a huge morale booster. "In the past, we didn't have clear targets. This time, with a roadmap through to 2030, every player, coach and official knows the direction.
