Seven newly identified victims of Srebrenica buried at ceremony marking genocide's 30th anniversary

Thousands of people from Bosnia and around the world gathered in Srebrenica to mark the 30th anniversary of a massacre there of more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim boys and men — an atrocity that has been acknowledged as Europe's only genocide after the Holocaust. Seven newly identified victims of the 1995 massacre, including two 19-year-old men, were laid to rest in a collective funeral at a vast cemetery near Srebrenica Friday, next to more than 6,000 victims already buried there.

Why Asia's ‘Scamdemic' Is Everyone's Problem

Save What do a Chinese actor, an Illinois widow, and a young Vietnamese man have in common? They're all victims of scams — once an annoying and seemingly random crime that has scaled up into a global business that cost the world a trillion dollars last year. The breadth of the industry stretches far and wide, stemming from forced labor gulags in the gray-zone borderlands of Southeast Asia. This is a crisis run by international crime syndicates that no single nation can solve, despite many previous efforts. Ending it will require the US and China to put rivalry aside and cooperate in a region where they both exercise huge influence. The alternative? This shadowy industry will only grow bolder, and harder to stop.

Stop Banking Scammers by Blocking Fake Ads

'Scam Victims Point Finger at Banks' tells the story of a couple who lost their life savings and then sued their bank (Markets & Finance, July 21). How did the scam begin? The victim responded to an online investment ad that put him in touch with a scammer. What if the criminal couldn't place the fake ad in the first place? Stopping scams at the source by blocking fake financial ads isn't fantasy. Google has squashed such ads in the U.K. since 2021 by requiring financial advertisers to be on an authorized list. Google boasts that this policy led to a 'pronounced decline in reports of ads promoting financial scams.' Google's success in the U.K. has led it to expand verification of financial services ads to 17 countries.
