Piyush Goyal meets top global CEOs, discusses India's potential in EV, RE sectors

on Monday met some top global CEOs in Paris to explore their future investment plans for the India market in promising sectors like electric vehicle and renewable energy (RE).
The minister is on an official trip to France with the aim of boosting trade and investments and will also attend a ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on Tuesday.
"Held a meeting with Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group. Exchanged views on India's growing potential as an automobile manufacturing hub, along with emerging opportunities in the EV sector," Goyal posted on X social media platform.
He also met Bernard Fontana, Chairman and CEO of state-owned energy provider EDF, and discussed India's growing leadership in the renewable energy sector and "ways to further integrate sustainable energy solutions into our development roadmap".
Earlier, the Union Minister met Patrick Pouyanne, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, a global integrated energy company.
"Discussed the company's investment plans for India and avenues for deeper collaboration in the renewable energy sector," said Goyal.
Commerce Minister has also indicated that India is likely to sign a free trade agreement (FTA) with Oman soon, as the talks between the two countries are making headway. The talks for the free trade pact with Oman started in November 2023, and Goyal visited the Gulf country from January 27 to January 28. During his three-day engagements in France, Union Minister Goyal is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings, including with Eric Lombard, Minister of Economy, and Laurent Saint-Martin, French Trade Minister, according to the Commerce Ministry. The discussions will focus on strengthening the Indo-French economic partnership and exploring new avenues for enhancing trade and investment cooperation.
The minister will meet top leadership of major French companies such as Vicat, Total Energies, L'Oreal, Renault, Valeo, EDF and ATR.
Following his engagements in France, the Union Minister will proceed to Italy for the next leg of his official visit.

Census from March 2027
New Delhi: The Union government on Wednesday announced that the census exercise will be held in two phases beginning October 1, 2026. The first phase will be held in hilly and snow-hit areas in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Ladakh and other areas. The second phase covering other parts of the country will be held from March 1, 2027. It is expected to be held in a time span of three years, government sources said. More than a month after the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) approved caste enumeration in the forthcoming population census, the Centre said census exercise with caste enumeration will finally begin from March 1, 2027. The exercise will take place in two phases in states/UTs including Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. 'It has been decided to conduct Population Census-2027 in two phases along with enumeration of castes. The reference date for Population Census – 2027 will be 00:00 hours of the first day of March, 2027. For the Union Territory of Ladakh and the non-synchronous snow-bound areas of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir and States of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the reference date will be 00.00 hours of the first day of October, 2026,' a press statement said. 'The notification for the intent of conducting the Population Census with the above reference dates will be published in the official gazette tentatively on June 16, 2025, as per provision of section 3 of Census Act 1948,' it said. 'The Census of India is conducted under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948 and the Census Rules, 1990. The last Census of India was conducted in 2011 in two phases, namely; Phase I – House Listing (HLO) (April 1 to 30 September 30, 2010) and Phase II – Population Enumeration (PE) (February 9 to February 28, 2011) with reference date – 00:00 hours of the first day of March 2011, except for snow-bound non-synchronous areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh for which it was conducted during 11 to 30 September 2010 with reference date as 00.00 hours of the first day of October 2010,' it said. During the announcement of the caste enumeration earlier on April 20, this year, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had said, 'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Cabinet Committee of Political Affairs has decided … that caste enumeration should be included in the forthcoming Census. This demonstrates that a government is committed to the values and interests of a society and country.' The Centre's decision came while the Opposition – particularly Congress leader Rahul Gandhi – had upped its ante against the NDA-led government over the issue. Since the announcement of the Census exercise and its deferment owing to the Covid pandemic in 2020, the deadline for freezing jurisdictional boundaries has been extended multiple times.

Italian business leaders pledge investments in India after high-level meeting with Commerce Minister
Milan [Italy], June 5 (ANI): Leading Italian companies have announced significant investment plans for India following a strategic meeting with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal in Milan, signalling strengthened economic ties between the two nations. The meeting brought together top executives from key Italian industrial sectors, including commercial refrigeration, aerospace and defence, and technical gases, all expressing a strong commitment to expanding their operations in India's rapidly growing market. Marco Nocivelli, CEO of EPTA Group, a specialist in commercial refrigeration, emphasised the substantial opportunities he sees in the Indian market. 'It is absolutely interesting to meet the minister and see how big the opportunity is in India,' Nocivelli said. 'Big country with a growth rate that is an important one, and also an opportunity to present our sustainable technology that will bring to India a more advanced solution for refrigeration systems.' EPTA has already established a subsidiary in Bengaluru and plans to unveil its expansion strategy at a press conference in June. Delhi to get ₹24k-cr road projects with Centre's aid: CM Gupta
The central government has given to the national capital various road projects worth ₹1.25 lakh crore over the last years due to which key connectivity stretches are in the works, including an underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road, an elevated corridor from Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport, the Delhi–Katra–Amritsar Expressway, and a 20km-long new road from Inderlok metro station to Sonepat via Munak canal, chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Wednesday. Detailed reports of each of the projects have been prepared and the work is likely to begin soon, she said. The announcement came after a high-level meeting chaired by Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari. Lieutenant governor V K Saxena, Union minister of state Harsh Malhotra, Delhi cabinet ministers, members of Parliament Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and Manoj Tiwari, and senior government officials were also present at the meeting. The CM said that the aforementioned projects 'will be crucial in easing the traffic between Delhi and Haryana.' 'Projects worth nearly ₹35,000 crore are currently being implemented in Delhi, and projects worth ₹64,000 crore have already been completed. In the coming times, ₹24,000 crore worth of projects for which detailed project reports have been made will be implemented to decongest Delhi and make traffic movement smooth…I want to thank (PM) Narendra Modi and Nitin Gadkari for helping decongest Delhi and make it a pollution-free city,' said Gupta. The upcoming projects include the construction of an approximately 7km-long underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road; an elevated road from INA to the airport — which will later connect to Faridabad and Gurugram; a highway connecting Delhi to Katra and Amritsar, which will be linked to the Urban Extension Road (UER)-II; and a second extension of UER-II, which will connect Alipur to Tronica City and the Delhi–Dehradun route. These new routes will enable seamless travel between Haryana, Dehradun, and Noida without the need to enter Delhi, officials said. 'A feasibility study is also underway for a tunnel from Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport,' CM Gupta said, adding that several key initiatives are being undertaken to decongest Delhi. The CM also gave details on the completed and ongoing projects. The National Highways Authority of India is currently implementing projects in Delhi worth ₹35,000 crore, while projects worth ₹64,000 crore have already been completed, she said.. According to a government report, the major completed road projects include the 135km Eastern Peripheral Expressway ( ₹12,000 crore), Dhaula Kuan–Gurugram corridor ( ₹373 crore), Gurugram–Sohna Road ( ₹2,009 crore), Delhi–Panipat corridor ( ₹2,205 crore), and the 32km Delhi–Dehradun Expressway stretch from Akshardham to EPE junction ( ₹3,500 crore). Several other flagship projects are nearing completion, such as the Delhi–Meerut Expressway (92% work done), Dwarka Expressway (98%), UER-II (95%), and the DND Interchange–Kalindi Kunj–Faridabad–Sohna–Jewar Airport Link Road (93%). Major roads such as Rohtak Road, Punjabi Bagh to Nangloi, Ashram to Badarpur, and MG Road have also been handed over to NHAI, not only for decongestion works but also for the development of proper drainage systems, side lanes, and necessary infrastructure. 'Earlier, such tasks were handled by multiple agencies, leading to issues such waterlogging and unconnected drainage. Now, these problems will be resolved solely by NHAI at its own expense, with support from the Delhi Public Works Department,' said CM Gupta. NHAI has also sanctioned ₹150 crore for construction of RUBs (Road Under Bridges) and ROBs (Road Over Bridges) to eliminate bottlenecks caused by railway crossings. 'A total of ₹1.25 lakh crore worth projects for decongestion projects have been initiated in Delhi by the central government. I want to thank the Centre for supporting Delhi,' said CM Gupta. She further said that all future road projects would maximise the use of inert construction material. This initiative will not only reduce burden on landfill sites but also re-purpose the waste into valuable construction resources, she said.
