Prime Video is beginning an AI dubbing pilot program for select movies and series
In an effort to make movies and TV shows more accessible on Prime Video, Amazon announced that it's testing an AI dubbing system that will translate select content on the company's streaming service into other languages.
Amazon says that "AI-aided dubbing" will be available in English and Latin American Spanish on 12 licensed movies and series available through Prime Video, including "El Cid: La Leyenda, Mi Mamá Lora and Long Lost." That the company describes it as "AI-aided dubbing" rather than just AI dubbing appears to be key here. Amazon says it's taking a hybrid approach where "localization professionals collaborate with AI." A safe guess would be that Amazon's AI system takes a first pass at generating dubs and then professionals edit them for accuracy and fit.
Creating captions, subtitles and dubs is a fairly big business, especially now that streaming has increased the number of films and series that are made every year and licensed to be viewed around the world. It makes sense that streamlining the process of making content more accessible would be of interest to Amazon. The possible problem is, at least for film and television, dubbing is done by professional actors. AI-generated voices have gotten more lifelike over the years, but it remains to be seen whether the average person will be okay with a large portion of their media diet being delivered by something human-adjacent rather than the real deal.
Of course, maybe we'll be trained to accept it because it will be all over social media first. Amazon isn't alone in leveraging AI to squeeze more out of the videos on its platform. YouTube released a tool in 2024 that lets creators automatically dub their videos in other languages when they upload them, and more recently, Meta announced plans to automatically dub and lip-sync Reels on Instagram into other languages.

LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle at Black Friday Price, Amazon Clearing Shelves Before Summer Starts
The most popular LEGO licence is Harry Potter (followed closely by Star Wars) and it is a line whose sets rarely receive significant markdowns on the official LEGO site. So when there is any kind of price drop, especially on popular sets like the Hogwarts Castle and Grounds, it's a big deal with collectors and fans. Amazon has become the go-to place for grabbing these rare deals, and right now, the LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts castle is priced at an all-time low of $144 from its $169 list price. This is a highly unusual opportunity (as official retailers almost never offer such discounts) and Amazon's stock is selling out fast even in the middle of summer. If you're a Harry Potter enthusiast or looking for the perfect gift for a LEGO-loving adult, now is the moment to act before the deal disappears. See at Amazon Why You Should Consider Buying It? The LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle and Grounds (76419) is a nicely crafted display model designed specifically for adult builders. With 2,660 pieces, this set offers an immersive building experience that brings the magic of the Wizarding World into your home. In contrast to other massive Hogwarts structures, this one is a more humble and modest micro-scale version. It takes up much less room than the massive micro-scale Hogwarts Castle (71043), so it is ideal for collectors who want a highly detailed centerpiece without overwhelming their shelves. The intentional design and small footprint of the set have made it a favorite among adult fans who appreciate both the challenge and display value. The model includes all of the most recognizable locations from within the Harry Potter universe: Main Tower, Astronomy Tower, Great Hall, Boathouse, courtyards, greenhouses, pathways, and bridges, as well as the jagged terrain and the Black Lake. Inside the castle, you'll find recognizable rooms such as the Chamber of Secrets, the Chamber of the Winged Keys, the Potions Room, and the Chessboard Room. The inclusion of these detailed interiors allows you to relive memorable scenes from the films and books, which make the set a true celebration of Harry Potter lore. You will also love the gold-colored mini-figure of the Hogwarts builder which can be situated next to the 'Hogwarts Castle' nameplate or across from the corner of the baseplate, completing the magical centerpiece. The box itself is a perfect blend of display and collectible, something to be observed from all angles. This LEGO Hogwarts Castle is a must-have for any Harry Potter – and LEGO fan. This sale won't last long, make sure you grab yours before it runs out of stock. See at Amazon

Down 18%, are we witnessing the slow decline of Alphabet stock?
Like many of the Magnificent 7, Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) stock has performed poorly over the last few months. Its once all-powerful moat in internet search is coming under serious threat from multiple angles. So, is this merely a mid-life crisis or something much more problematic? In its Q1 results, posted at the end of April, the business continued to see strong growth momentum. Revenues for the quarter came in at $90bn, 12% higher than a year ago. Representing over 50% of total revenues, Google search was up 10%. Google subscriptions, platforms, and YouTube ads also saw strong growth momentum. The business continues to invest heavily in AI. It recently launched Gemini 2.5, although it's still in preview mode and doesn't offer a paid tier with full access yet. The new AI model is not aimed at your average consumer. This probably explains why the pricing model will be different. It claims the model is capable of 'analyzing large datasets, codebases, and documents using long context'. But like so many of its peers, it has been rather vague on detail, other than saying it had addressed user feedback. Google, like all the other Magnificent 7 stocks, are trying to understand how generative AI is likely to evolve and whether it's a long-term threat to their business models. With 90% of all internet searches being conducted through Chrome, Google looks particularly vulnerable to me. A month ago, investors were totally spooked after an Apple executive disclosed in a court case that Google-search traffic on its devices using Safari fell for the first time ever. The speed of adoption of generative AI among the general consumer is what has completely taken me by surprise. Key to an acceleration in this trend have been AI-generated summaries at the top of search results. Google and Microsoft may be at the forefront of rolling out this new feature, but this technology has the potential to cannibalise existing revenue streams. Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the foundation of the internet. The whole marketing industry is based on fine tuning algorithms to ensure a company attracts traffic to their web pages. The rise of so-called 'zero-click' results looks set to upend this key tenet. In a recent survey conducted by consultancy firm Bain, it found that about 80% of consumers now rely on zero-click results in at least 40% of their searches. They estimated that this new phenomenon has reduced organic web traffic by between 15% to 25%. The likes of Perplexity AI and ChatGPT continue to attract consumers. According to Bain's research, approximately 40% to 70% of LLM users use the platforms to conduct research and summarise information, find the latest news and weather, and ask for shopping recommendations. Across the marketing industry, generative engine optimisation or GEO is becoming the new buzz term. This is in recognition of the growing role of bots trawling the web to train LLMs. Marketing revenues from clicks are the lifeblood of Google's business model. As it tries to find way to integrate and grow revenues from its own AI offerings, capital expenditures will continue to grow. With so much future uncertainty, I will continue to observe from the sidelines, but I don't rule out an investment in the future.
