Power line to support growth in industry
Fonterra is teaming up with The Power Company and Transpower to build a new 110kV power line in Southland, aimed at supporting industrial growth and reducing emissions at its Edendale site.
In a media statement, Power Company group chairman Peter Moynihan said the new line would provide reliable energy to the growth of industry and Fonterra's move towards a greener future.
Called the Hokonui Line, the project is set to begin construction in September next year. It will provide power for the site's expansion, including a new UHT milk plant, and help drive the co-op's transition away from coal.
Fonterra unveiled the plant's first fossil-fuel-free electrode boiler in May, replacing one of the plant's five coal boilers.
At the time, it also announced the $70m plan for two more boilers to be built and operational by August 2027.
Mr Moynihan said the new line will also be completed by that date.
"This project ensures our network has the strength and resilience needed to meet increasing demand, support industry, and enable the transition to a low-emissions economy," he said.
It was a great example of infrastructure partners working together toward a common goal, he said.
The project team was engaging early with stakeholders and landowners to ensure clear and consistent communication.
Alongside supporting the growth of one of New Zealand's oldest and largest industrial sites, it would generate jobs for the region.
In May, Fonterra chief operating officer Anna Palairet said the introduction of the electrode boilers was part of the company's goal to halve its carbon emissions by 2030.
Earlier this week , the company's energy and climate general manager Linda Mulvihill further highlighted the importance of investments like the line in enabling industrial decarbonisation.
Transpower acting executive general manager of external affairs Diana Price said as well as powering Fonterra, the line will have wider power security benefits for Southland.
She said the investment showed the two power companies shared commitment and co-operation in supporting local industry and enabling a lower emission future. — Allied Media

Assessment of draft water plan not far off
PHOTO: ODT FILES A government assessment of a "rough working draft" of its water services delivery plan is expected soon, the Waitaki District Council says. At the latest weekly update on Tuesday, councillors and WDC staff provided further information on water service delivery plan requirements and the capital expenditure programme, needed to establish the planned ring-fenced, in-house water services unit as part of Local Water Done Well legislation. Last week the council submitted a draft plan to the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), and is awaiting feedback. "We're expecting to be able to share some feedback next week, but we do know that we've got more work to do on our water services delivery plan before it is ready to be submitted," council chief executive Alex Parmley said. Presentations at Tuesday's workshop were made by the Local Government Finance Association (the main lender to local councils), representatives from Morrison Low, and district council infrastructure manager Joshua Rendell, together with assets planning manager Paul Hayes. There was also information on the introduction of water metering for water users in the district. That would see users move to a volume-metric charging system, based on water usage. WDC staff pointed out water metering had been shown in other areas to result in lower bills for the majority of households, excepting those with very large families. It had also resulted in a reduction of water wastage. It was also recommended that metering should be free for at least one year to help establish usage behaviour and identify any water leaks. The council will continue to work on creating a financially sustainable water services delivery plan. The deadline for providing internal affairs with a final water services delivery plan is September 3. The presentation given at the workshop is available on the council's website together with the working draft water services delivery plan. The next public workshop is scheduled from 3.30pm to 4.30pm on Tuesday, August 12 at the Council Chambers in Thames St.

A major electricity infrastructure project is set to boost energy security, enable decarbonisation, and support future growth across eastern Southland with The Power Company Limited (TPCL) announcing plans for a new 110kV overhead line known as the Hokonui Line. The project is a partnership between TPCL, Transpower and Fonterra, and will see a 12.5km PowerNet line constructed between a new Transpower substation on Cuttance Road and a new Fonterra substation at Fonterra's Edendale site.
