Jasprit Bumrah Slander Needs To Stop: Why Indian Fans Are Fighting Back Against Trolls
It was not lost on anyone that India won two Tests in the recently concluded five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy without their best bowler, Jasprit Bumrah. It was decided by the team management and selectors ahead of the series that the 31-year-old premier fast bowler would play three out of five Test matches, and that is exactly what happened. Bumrah sat out in the Edgbaston Test, the second clash between England and India. The pacer then played two consecutive matches at the Lord's and Old Trafford. India 1-2 down after four contests needed the good ol' Bumrah to rise and help India square the series, but the bowler, struggling to keep up the pace as the series advanced, was ruled out. With no absolute reasons given for his absence, it was later reported that Bumrah's exclusion wasn't to manage his workload or safeguard his back but to give him respite from a minor knee injury.
As luck would have it, Mohammed Siraj, who played second fiddle to Bumrah, rose to the occasion in the final straw at The Oval as well, where he scalped as many as nine English wickets. Concluding the series on a high and a fifer in the second innings, Siraj ended the tour with a staggering 23 wickets to his name and plenty of praise for his 'lionhearted" display of grit and determination to bowl lengthy spells and a record-breaking number of overs.
Bumrah Slander
It did not sit well with Bumrah supporters that the man struggling to keep going was dragged by 'irrational fans" online who celebrated Siraj while scrutinising Bumrah over his lack of fitness. The criticism voiced against Bumrah was harsh, and that these 'fans" expected Bumrah to match Siraj's level of intensity and labour was unfair to the best-ranked Test bowler in the scene.
'Why does praising Siraj for his endurance have to come with dissing Bumrah? They are different types of cricketers. You can like a Battle Tank and a Fighter Jet," @hankypanty remarked on X.
'This sniggering about Bumrah is unfortunate & unfair. As cricket fans we are lucky to see his genius – and to expect him to keep ravaging his body cos irrational fans want it that way is just plain ungrateful. We should be happy that other bowlers have stepped up in his absence," added @nowme_datta.
One of my favourite quotes from the legendary @naval 's book.A reminder that Siraj can be praised without deriding Bumrah. pic.twitter.com/c5GMonczAl — Sarvesh🏏 (@CricAspect) August 4, 2025
'The anti Bumrah narrative is going to go worse ways now. I really feel bad for him. He has given his everything to return from injury and play two big Test series. Doesn't deserve this (sic)," @c_soubhagya.
The sentiment around Siraj stepping up without Bumrah by his side was turned into memes.

The Funny Game
Bumrah was not a part of the playing XI that won two Test matches. India crushed England in the second Test at Edgbaston. Captain Shubman Gill was adjudged the Player of the Match for his twin centuries (269 & 161). Akash Deep claimed a ten-for here, and Siraj picked up seven across both the English innings.
Siraj was instrumental in India's victory in the final and series decider contest at The Oval, where he scalped nine wickets. This edge-of-the-seat thriller where India won by 6 runs was missed by Bumrah.
India win 2-0 without Bumrah and lose 2-0 with him. Funny old game— Ben Gardner (@Ben_Wisden) August 4, 2025
Bumrah's Stats
Despite playing only three contests in what turned out to be an exciting Test series between the two nations, Bumrah was India's leading wicket-taker ahead of The Oval Test that went in India's favour, helping them square the series at 2-2. Bumrah and Siraj both had 14 wickets in their bags before the final Test.
The sublime bowler finished the series with 14 wickets to his name at an average of 26.
While his bowling stats included two five-wicket hauls, it was his excruciating spell of 33 overs, which yielded only 2 wickets at Old Trafford in Manchester, was discussed widely. This was the match where England responded with a staggering 669 to India's 358. India began their second outing with 0/2 on the board before KL Rahul (90), Shubman Gill (103), Washington Sundar (101), and Ravindra Jadeja (107) worked together to not only save India from a certain defeat, but also prevent a series loss. The Old Trafford match ended in a heroic draw.
Aussie legend Glenn McGrath warned that Bumrah needed an off-season to avoid further injuries in his Test career. His action and workload had taken a toll on him, and he needed some much-needed time off from the action.
'Someone like Bumrah needs an off-season because he puts so much into every ball. With so much extensive effort, he needs a break. If he keeps playing, the amount of pressure created given the bowling action he has, he is bound to get injured, which he has in the past," McGrath said at the MRF Pace Foundation.
Siraj, The Workhorse
Every single cricket fan in India now believes in Siraj bhai. The man led the bowling attack with 23 wickets to his name. Siraj bowled 185.3 overs in the five-match Test series.
The bowler put in the hard yards and was deservedly credited for spearheading India's comeback, securing a thrilling 2-2 series draw.

More recently, Bumrah was released from the Test squad for the decisive fifth match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval, with the team management choosing to manage his workload. The senior pacer played three of the first four Tests, claiming two five-wicket hauls and bowling a total of 119.4 overs across the series. His absence from the final Test, however, reignited debate about his fitness, especially after a back injury had kept him out of action for four months earlier this the Asia Cup being played in the T20 format, such concerns are expected to be less pressing. Bumrah will only need to bowl a maximum of four overs per match, and with three to four days' rest between fixtures in the group stage, his workload is unlikely to be an issue. While the BCCI had floated the idea of a preparatory camp in Bengaluru, the management preferred instead to arrive in the Emirates a few days beforehand to acclimatise to conditions."Instead of having a camp here, the team will fly three to four days early so that they can get decent practice before the tournament starts," a source told The Indian return is likely to be viewed as a crucial lift for India as they aim to defend their Asia Cup crown and build momentum ahead of the T20 World Cup later this year.- EndsYou May Also Like

‘I wasn't a natural': How Rahul Dravid became one of cricket's greatest slip fielders with help from Bob Simpson
Former India captain Rahul Dravid had evolved from a wicket-keeper batter at the age-group level in Karnataka to an all-time great Test No. 3 for India. Even in India colours, Dravid had stepped up as the makeshift glovesman behind the stumps, but his legacy as one of the finest slip fielders in the game also remains firmly in place. Dravid held the world record for most Test catches for nearly 13 years since his retirement until England's Joe Root surpassed him during the recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The legendary batter had once put down his snappy reflexes in the slips to a fruitful stint with legendary Australia cricketer and coach, Bob Simpson, who passed away aged 89 on Saturday. 'I wasn't a good enough bowler to be able to contribute with the ball. I tried my best. So I sort of figured out 'How do you contribute to the team? What do you do?'. I mean, sitting there as a batsman, what can I do really well, and one of the things was, if I catch well, it's a contribution. You feel you're involved, you're playing a part,' Dravid had once said on the Lessons Learnt with the Greats podcast. 'I had to work on it, I don't think I was as much a natural, but I had to practise a lot of slip catching, and one of the really good pieces of technical advice that I received early on was to ensure that the weight was on the balls of my feet and ensuring that my balance was really good as a fielder, and ensuring I got into a really good position.' Dravid recollected how a stint with Simpson between 1998-1999 helped him ace the slip fielder's technique and went on to break Mark Waugh's world record to become the first designated fielder to collect 200 Test catches. Simpson, who coached Australia to the 1987 World Cup title, joined the Indian national side on a consultant basis only two years after Dravid made his Test debut. 'I remember Bobby Simpson came and spent some time with the Indian team in 1998/99 and he took us through a lot of slip catching drills. And one of the things he stressed on a lot was having your feet bent a little bit so that you could get your weight into the balls of your feet. That was something I took to heart and practised a lot.' 'Even watching someone like Mark Waugh, the way he stood, in some ways I used to watch that. It was a really good Australian slip-catching unit: you had [Mark] Taylor, Waugh, they were really, really good, and you used to sort of watch them.' An out-and-out trier, Dravid had said that his 210 catches in 164 Tests was a product of diligence, exhorting that slip fielding was an art that got better with practice. 'Slip catching, a lot of it, is about practice – the more practice you can do, the variety of practice you can do – it's not mindlessly taking catches. I think catching [to] spinners was a very important thing for India, about a hundred of those catches are off two spinners – [Anil] Kumble and Harbhajan [Singh], I took about 60 of them playing in India – we do prepare turning tracks!' Regarded as one of the pioneers of modern-day Australian cricket, Simpson's transition from a great leader and astute slip fielder to coaching ensured that he unearthed a horde of stars during his coaching tenure. As one of the great slip fielders of his time, he is credited with training drills that helped Mark Waugh become one of the great catchers and more importantly turn David Boon into one of the sharpest short-leg catchers of all time. Simpson played 62 Tests for Australia from 1957 to 1978, scoring 4,869 runs at an average of 46.81, including 10 centuries and 27 half-centuries. He captained Australia in 39 Tests and was their head coach for 10 years from 1986, helping them win the 1987 World Cup in India, the famous 1989 Ashes in England and an epic away series win in West Indies in 1995.
