New bakery brings slice of France to the western suburbs

Western suburbs locals are in for a treat with the opening of a new French cafe.
Artisan Crust Bakery flung open the doors to their Floreat Forum venue on Tuesday morning.
Husband and wife duo Benjamin and Marie Gauthier are the culinary brains behind the western European inspired venture, aiming to bring a taste of France to Perth.
Specialising in a selection of French treats, the venue is serving up croissants, pain au chocolats and their signature canéle de Bordeaux.
The menu also boasts a range of savoury delights from Aussie-style meat pies, quiches, toasties and baguettes filled with local ingredients.
Coffee lovers can fuel up with an assortment of caffeinated drinks brewed with beans from Blacklist Coffee Roasters.
The bakery has been hinting at the location's upcoming arrival since an initial announcement post on Instagram in early May.
Artisan Crust Bakery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 7:30am to 3:30pm and can be found in the Outdoor Forum at Shop 81/5 Howtree Place Floreat.

A much-loved bakery that was once the talk of the Perth Hills teased a reopening on social media just one year after closing — but die-hard fans shouldn't get too excited. Posting on Facebook earlier this week, the former owner of Honey's Bakehouse in Roleystone, Brent Ashley Honey, said customers will see him baking again. 'Shut the doors a year ago. It's been a wild ride, for sure. I have no idea when, I have no idea where, but you'll see me slinging baked goods again someday,' Mr Honey wrote. Mr Honey told PerthNow he was shocked at the overwhelming response he got on social media, saying 'I didn't think anyone would give two sh*ts to be honest, I was a bit taken aback'. And while a reopening might happen in the future, Mr Honey said nothing is planned just yet. 'If you'd asked me 12 months ago I would have said 'shove it up your arse,'' the baker said in his signature colourful language. 'If you talk to anyone who's got a small business it's all consuming... your whole life revolves around your business. It's pretty hard to get going, it's also hard to be good at it too.' 'Customer service is pretty dog sh*t at some of these places ... if I was balls deep making sausage rolls or frying donuts or whatever, I'd be (saying) 'how you going, what are you up to?' Our shop was super small so you could do that... we had fun, swearing and carrying on and just talking like normal people.' The baked goods were incredibly popular with Perth Hills locals, as well as those who travelled long distances, with social media users excited over the teased reopening. 'I do miss those cream buns (and you and Abby),' one user wrote. 'Best cream buns and creme brûlée I've ever eaten,' posted another. 'I neeeeeeed Ur jam donuts ...NOW lol,' another added. And perfectly summing up the vibe Mr Honey had envisioned for the business and that he made a reality, one supporter said: 'You both brought so much to the community.' An Australian Bakers Cook Book,' where again he was surprised at its popularity. 'Some bogan swearing about baking stuff, (I thought) no one would give a sh*t, it went great,' he said. Mr Honey said he now has another book in the works that he plans to release by the end of the year. And while fans will have to wait for another Honey's Bakehouse, he said he was open to doing a pop-up event with some of his baker mates. 'Even after 12 months of being out of the shop I can't seem to switch that off,' he said. For now, Perth Hills residents and those that travelled for the baked treats will have to hold tight.

Australian business leaders welcomed the plans from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for closer ties with Asia, seeing it as a step towards cutting trade barriers on cars, food and investment. The trade agenda is being shaped by concerns in Europe on the economic conflict with the US over tariffs and the military threats from Russia, leading it to seek stronger alliances with like-minded nations. In a clear overture to Asia, the EU president has declared her interest in opening Europe to one of the world's largest trade blocs, known as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which includes Australia, as well as Japan, South Korea and Canada. Australian leaders, speaking during a delegation to Europe, said the EU was looking for 'fellow travellers' to shore up its security. 'There is now something of an imperative for this,' said Duncan Lewis, the former Australian ambassador to NATO, former head of ASIO and now the chair of the European Australia Business Council (EABC). 'We do need to move together and operate together with the EU so that commerce can move freely, investment can move more freely, and produce such as agricultural goods can move more freely. 'But all of that is, of course, underpinned by this fact that Europe now feels threatened.'
