New Delhi: A parliamentary panel has sought details from two key ministries overseeing information flow on the action they have planned against social media platforms and influencers who "seem to be working against national interest", following the Pahalgam terror attack. The parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology , headed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey, has noted that some social media influencers and platforms in the country seem to be working against national interest, which is likely to incite violence, sources said.The committee, in a communication to the ministries of Information and Broadcasting and Electronics and Information Technology, has sought details of the "contemplated action to ban such platforms under IT Act, 2000 and Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021".The letter, the sources said, has been sent to the secretaries of the two ministries and they have been asked to submit the details by May 8.Several social-media handles have been banned on different platforms after they allegedly posted content against national-security interests.Twenty-six people, mostly tourists, were gunned down by terrorists in south Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, with India blaming terror groups linked to Pakistan for the horrific incident.Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale, who is a member of the panel, said in a post on X that he had not received any communication related to the issue quoted in the memorandum. He claimed that according to rules, the chairperson cannot issue a statement without the approval of the committee.Gokhale, however, deleted his post later.

A government school headmaster in Karnataka's Belagavi has been suspended after staging a barefoot protest demanding proper classrooms for his students, many of whom are forced to study under open skies due to poor infrastructure, Indian Express reported. Veeranna Madivalar, the headmaster of Government Lower Primary School in Nidagundi village walked 15 km barefoot last week to the Block Education Office in Raibag taluk. Madivalar, an award-winning educator who has been recognised both at the district and international level, said he resorted to a silent protest as a 'self-imposed punishment' after repeated appeals to authorities went unheard. 'This was never an agitation against the government. I only wanted a basic learning environment for the children,' he told reporters. 'Every award I've received has been used to support my students. No child should have to study under the sun or in the rain.' However, officials did not take kindly to his methods. Days after the protest, the Block Education Officer (BEO) of Raibag taluk, Basavarajappa R, issued a suspension order, citing misconduct and violation of service rules. According to the order, Madivalar's protest was seen as an act of defiance against the department, causing 'embarrassment to the government' and breaching the Karnataka Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 2021. The order specifically invoked Rule 9(ii), which prohibits government employees from organising or participating in strikes. 'The headmaster should have pursued official channels through written communication, not protested publicly and involved the media,' the BEO said, also noting that the protest attracted social media attention and adverse publicity. The suspension has drawn strong criticism from education activists, parents, and local residents, who say it is unjust to penalise a teacher for highlighting the failure to provide basic infrastructure. While the Tahsildar of Raibag had assured Madivalar during the protest that the matter would be taken up with senior officials, there has been no update on the classroom construction or reversal of the suspension order, the report further added. CHENNAI: The Chennai Mahila Court on Monday sentenced the sole accused in the Anna University rape case, A Gnanasekaran, to life imprisonment. He must undergo at least 30 years of imprisonment. On December 24, a complaint was lodged by the survivor at the Kotturpuram All Women Police Station (AWPS), alleging that Gnanasekaran threatened her when she was with a male friend on the university campus and then raped her. According to the prosecution, Gnanasekaran recorded the act on his mobile phone. As the identity of the victim was leaked in the public domain on December 26, the Madras High Court constituted an all-women Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. On February 24, the SIT completed the probe and filed a 100-page charge sheet before the jurisdictional magistrate. On March 7, the case was transferred to the Mahila Court, which framed charges against Gnanasekaran under sections 329 (criminal trespass), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 87 (abduction of a woman), 127(2), 75(2) read with 75(i), (ii), (iii), 76, 64(1) (rape), 351(3), 238(b) of BNS and BNSS, Section 66 of the IT Act, and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Women Harassment Act.

‘Restore her services': Haryana Teachers' body terms varsity professor's termination ‘illegal'
An indefinite dharna by Professor Monika Malik, former dean of the Department of Law, Central University of Haryana (CUH), Mahendragarh district, against the university authorities since October 16 last year over issues related to her seniority and selection process, among others, entered the 229th day on Sunday. Amidst this academic conflict between Malik and the CUH, the authorities dismissed her on May 7 and another professor, alleging their selection process was a 'procedural and regulatory violation'. Referring to a resolution of its executive council, the CUH issued a notification on May 7, saying it had 'processed further after hearing out both the employees in question and giving them the opportunity to represent their cases before the vice-chancellor/ executive council'. Discontinuing their services, the university claimed 'the eligibility criteria was not uniformly or lawfully applied across the candidates'. On Friday, a delegation of the Haryana Federation of University and College Teachers' Organization (HFUCTO) visited the CUH and submitted a memorandum to CUH Vice-Chancellor Tankeshwar Kumar, seeking the restoration of Malik's services. Claiming that the CUH authorities terminated her services 'illegally' without any basis or an enquiry rather than redressing Malik's grievances, the HFUCTO said: 'Professor Monika (Malik) had been serving in the CUH since December 27, 2019. She was promoted to the Professor post with effect from December 27, 2022. She is a confirmed employee, and her services can only be terminated by following the procedure laid down under Section 14 of the CCS (CCA) Rules, 1965, applicable to the employee of the CUH… First, there is no basis or ground to terminate her services. Second, no enquiry has been conducted as contemplated in the CCS (CCA) Rules.'
