Catch a huge fish in West Virginia? You might qualify for recognition even if it's not a record
Video shows new state records for largemouth bass and blue catfish that were caught in May 2025.
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) offers Trophy Fish Citations to recognize anglers with especially impressive catches.
Anglers who catch the longest or heaviest fish in state history in certain categories are recognized as state record holders, given a certificate and often honored with news coverage. If an angler misses the record but meets certain length criteria, they could also be recognized, if they fill out an application.
The fish must 1. Meet the length requirement listed below, 2. Be caught legally by a licensed angler, 3. Be measured in front of a witness or photographed.

Bullhead Catfish – 16 inches
Rainbow Trout – 21 inches
Channel Catfish – 25 inches
Golden Rainbow Trout – 21 inches
Flathead Catfish – 35 inches
Tiger Trout – 21 inches
Crappie – 15 inches
Largemouth Bass – 21 inches
Sunfish – 10 inches
Smallmouth Bass – 20 inches
Chain Pickerel – 20 inches
Spotted Bass – 14 inches
Northern Pike – 32 inches
Rock Bass – 10 inches
Walleye – 28 inches
Striped Bass – 30 inches
Sauger – 17 inches
Hybrid Striped Bass – 24 inches
Yellow Perch – 13 inches
White Bass – 15 inches

The application for a Trophy Fish Citation is available online here. It must be filled out and mailed to the following address within 60 days of the catch:

The citations for trophy fish in West Virginia include colorful, original artwork by Joseph Tomelleri. An angler can receive one trophy citation for each species of fish per calendar year.
Think you caught a fish that is a state record? A record catch must be certified by the WVDNR witness and this form must be filled out. You can see the current records online here, which includes multiple records that have already been broken in 2025.

Fairmont cuts the ribbon on new pickleball courts

Advocates help raise awareness in Harrison County for Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month
CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — June is Alzheimer's and brain awareness month, and here in West Virginia, more than 38,000 people aged 65 and older have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or some sort of dementia, according to the Alzheimer's Impact Movement. And as the age of people diagnosed is decreasing, general concern is increasing. Advocates of the cause are helping raise awareness of Alzheimer's and brain health by speaking with local city councils. These advocates were granted a proclamation on behalf of the Harrison County Commission in its meeting on Wednesday, the Clarksburg City Council on Thursday, and will receive one from the Bridgeport City Council on Friday. 12 News spoke with Bill O'Field, Mission Chairman of the North Central Walk to End Alzheimer's, who spoke with doctors from the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute on what some of the key signs of dementia and Alzheimer's may look like. Harrison County commissioners split on future of Sunset Ellis property 'It's normal in the aging process to maybe forget a name or forget where you put your car keys, but then you find them. And maybe later in the day, the seniors say, 'but then I remember that name when I get home. The doctor said that's good.' That's just the normal aging process taking place. But it's when you can't cook for yourself, you don't know how to do your laundry, those are the true signs of Alzheimer's,' said O'Field. O'Field also mentioned to be wary of weight loss and depression, and to maintain a healthy diet and exercise, as a healthy body can help result in a healthy mind. New West Virginia Honor Flight will bus veterans to Washington
CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — This year's Honor Flight out of West Virginia will be a little different than years past, as the new Honor Flight North Central West Virginia hub will not take flight but rather a drive to Washington, D.C., for two nights and three days. The change comes after Honor Flight Huntington ceased operations. Now, Honor Flight North Central West Virginia will be the only operating hub out of West Virginia, according to Honor Flight North Central WV Coordinator Billie Jo Claypool. Claypool said this updated way of travel was inspired by a Virginia chapter that does the same. She added that this new way is set to be more cost-effective and allow veterans to visit more sites and stay there longer. Claypool estimates that each bus trip should cost around $30,000. On top of the lower cost, Claypool said that the goal is to have four trips a year, with around 25 veterans and their guardians each time, instead of just one trip. If all spots are taken, Claypool said those veterans' spots will automatically be reserved for the next trip, which is expected to be in the Spring. Elderly and disabled residents trapped without functioning elevator in Clarksburg apartment building 'We go up, we travel one day, we see all monuments and memorials the next, and then we travel home. All meals, all rooms and everything is provided for our veterans, so that's more relaxing and it doesn't wear them out as much,' Claypool said. In years past, the flight has taken off from the North Central West Virginia Airport, and then veterans were greeted with a special welcome by the community on their return flight. Now, the buses will depart and return to the Clarksburg VFW. Applications are now open for the fall Honor Flight, which is scheduled to be Sept. 12-14. Eligible veterans include those who are terminally ill veterans, World War II, Korean, and Vietnam War veterans. Claypool said to reach her at 304-677-7812 if you have any questions.
