Triple J host criticised over Anne Frank 'slut' joke at comedy festival
A Triple J radio host has been blasted for using a derogatory sexual term to describing Holocaust survivor Anne Frank during a stand-up routine at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
Concetta Caristo, a co-host of Triple J's breakfast program, was telling the audience she was a 'girls' girl' who could get along with 'any girl in the world, even in history'.
'Put me in a room with Cleopatra and I'd be like, 'Oh my god, I love your eyeliner', or with Anne Frank and I'd say, 'Slut, I have a diary too! Congrats on the book deal',' she said.
Concetta Caristo described Holocaust victim Anne Frank as a 'slut'.
But Anti-Defamation Commission chair Dvir Abramovich said it was not funny, describing it instead as a 'brutal desecration' of the memory of the Holocaust.
'This wasn't just a joke. It was a brutal desecration of the memory of Anne Frank and the one-and-a-half million Jewish children who were murdered in the Holocaust – gassed, shot, starved, erased,' he said in a statement.
'When someone takes a victim of genocide and turns her into an obscene punchline, they don't just mock her – they violate her.'

The 15-year-old girl died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945 after she was found hiding in Amsterdam.
She gained posthumous fame after the publication of her diary, which shared her personal account of the Holocaust.
'Anne Frank … didn't get a book deal. She got typhus. She got starvation. She got a death sentence in Bergen-Belsen,' Dr Abramovich said.
Concetta Caristo, a co-host of Triple J's breakfast program, has been criticised for making a joke about Holocaust victim Anne Frank.
He also expressed shock at the use of the word 'slut', describing it as a 'term of sexual humiliation aimed at a girl who never lived long enough to become a woman'.
Ms Caristo's management told NewsWire she was 'away and not available'.
Her social media indicates she is currently travelling, including kayaking in Hamilton Island.

Katy Perry set to spend more time with Justin Trudeau after dinner date
Don't miss out on the headlines from Hook Ups & Break Ups. Followed categories will be added to My News. Justin Trudeau is looking forward to spending more time with Katy Perry after 'really clicking' during a Montreal dinner date, two sources close to the former Canadian Prime Minister have told The U.S. Sun. Fireworks singer Perry, who recently split from fiance Orlando Bloom, took time out from her tour in Canada to grab dinner with divorced Trudeau on Monday night. The pair were snapped deep in conversation at swish eaterie Le Violon. And The U.S. Sun has been told by two of Trudeau's close associates that he wants to see the singer, who has been described as a 'breath of fresh air,' again. Trudeau separated from Sophie, his wife of 18 years, in 2023 and, according to our insiders, loved talking about a variety of topics with the 40 year-old star. The U.S. Sun understands the pair have been in contact for weeks after meeting at an event, and both share a common interest in trying to make the world a better place. Trudeau had hoped a quiet night in Montreal would have helped make the night more private. But with pics of the pair appearing on TMZ, their secret is out. 'Justin always enjoys nice company, and Katy is the kind of woman that really caught his attention,' the first source who worked with Trudeau while he was in office, told The U.S. Sun. 'Justin has been single for a while and has enjoyed getting to know her. He likes her personality, and they are two people who really enjoy chatting about different topics, and they click very well so far, as they are going to see each other again very soon.' Trudeau reportedly picked up the tab, which included lobster and cocktails, before showing their gratitude to the kitchen staff. The source says that although any hopes of keeping the dinner date under wraps were dashed, the 53-year-old politician doesn't regret anything. Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom remain close despite their split. Picture: Instagram. There are plans in the works for the pair to connect again in the United States, where he will be spending large amounts of time in the coming months. 'Whatever happens, happens. He is a single man, so is on the market and ready to start something new with a woman after a few rough moments after splitting from his wife,' continued the well-placed source. 'He is feeling that talking to her and getting to know her is very refreshing, like a breath of fresh air in his life. He was happy to connect with her so well, and that she appreciates him being a normal, respectful person who was very understanding of her recent separation with Orlando Bloom. 'He isn't the kind of guy that would rush things, and she seems to enjoy that a lot. It's a gentlemanly way to behave.' The second source, who also worked closely with Trudeau while he was the Canadian PM, claimed the pair had been waiting to meet up 'for a while' and that Perry agreed 'very quickly.' 'Justin isn't shy about his romantic life, and he took her on a date, and he was very, very excited to do so and kept talking about it in the last few days,' added the friend. 'He feels like a young adult again, he is very excited about the process so far, and he really enjoys to get to know her and to talk about many, many topics with her. Justin isn't a guy who is easy to 'catch' and he has been having a lot of women trying to date him since he separated from his wife.' Original Iron Maiden member Paul Mario Day, 69, dies
Don't miss out on the headlines from Entertainment. Followed categories will be added to My News. Iron Maiden star Paul Mario Day has died aged 69. The legendary musician's death was announced by his band MORE in a heartbreaking statement on Wednesday. 'We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the great MORE vocalist Paul Mario Day,' wrote the band. 'Paul was a huge part of the [New Wave of British Heavy Metal] from his time in an early version of Iron Maiden and of course his fantastic performance on the Warhead album.' 'He was a well loved figure in British rock music and played many memorable shows not least the legendary 1981 Monsters of Rock show at Castle Donington with AC/DC, Whitesnake/David Coverdale as well as tours with Iron Maiden Def Leppard and many other legendary artists.' Paul Mario Day has tragically passed away. Picture: Facebook. 'Mike Freeland remembers him fondly as a 'bloody great vocalist!' 'It's an honour for us to continue to play his music and we will always think of him every time we hit the opening notes to Warhead. 'We send our deepest condolences to Paul's family and friends and also the many fans around the world who love his music. 'Play his music loud and sing along! 'Thank you. Rock in peace Paul.' Paul Mario Day was recruited by bassist Steve Harris when he formed Iron Maiden in 1975. Day was the band's first singer, and stayed with the band between 1975 and 1976 before being replaced by Dennis Wilcock. Paul Di'Anno later took over from Wilcock, who would perform on the band's first two records. The former Iron Member star has lived in Australia since 1986. Picture: Facebook Day previously opened up about leaving the legendary band during an interview in 2019. 'Steve was saying, 'You've got to get better. You've got to be more in the audience's face. You've got to be commanding. 'You've got to be a hero.' And I agreed with him, but I didn't actually know how to make that happen.' He confessed that he had been left 'gutted' by the decision but that it provided an important lesson to him during his career. He added: 'What Steve was doing was trying to make the band big. He knew what he wanted. 'What he wanted is what he got. He got one of the biggest bands on the planet. As much as it hurt, as much as it upset me, I learnt a big lesson that day. I really did. I used that emotion, I guess, in my singing.' Day never returned to the band for any of their reunions and focused on performing with More. Day went on to start a new band after his exit from Iron Maiden. Picture: Facebook. The group skyrocketed to fame with their 1981 album Warhead and went on to perform at the 1981 Monsters Of Rock festival with fellow rock legends including AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Whitestnake. Day also became the frontman for Wildfire between 1983 and 1984. The following year he stepped in to sing for Sweet and band guitarist Andy Scott wrote in tribute: 'Mick Tucker and myself put together the first new line-up of Sweet after the hiatus of the original band. 'We needed a singer and when Paul arrived for the audition we looked no further. 'Our first dates were in Australia, total sellouts which boded well for the future. Europe followed suit and 3 sold out nights at the Marquee in London produced a live album, video and DVD. ''Live at the Marquee' did well in various charts around the world and Paul's vocal performance has stood the test of time.' Day, born in London, has lived in Australia since 1986. It will be released in 2027 in honour of Bend It Like Beckham's 25th anniversary and also to coincide with the FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil. Chadha told the BBC she'd received requests for a follow-up 'almost twice a week' since the release of the original, which was made on a $7.2 million budget and became a box office hit, making around $120 million worldwide. 'We've been part of changing the game for women, so it felt like this was a good time for me to go back and investigate the characters,' she explained. It's not yet clear whether the new instalment will be a film or TV series, but Chadha said she hoped to reunite some of the original cast members.
