A parent's guide to 'Freakier Friday': Is it suitable for young kids?

Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis' body-swapping shenanigans were a seminal movie moment for young film fans in the early 2000s, and the actresses are back to entertain another generation with more freaky hijinks. Rocker girl Anna (Lohan) and her psychiatrist mom Tess (Curtis) first switched places in 2003's "Freaky Friday." It happens again – this time alongside a couple of teen girls, Anna's daughter Harper (Julia Butters) and soon-to-be stepkid Lily (Sophia Hammons) – in director Nisha Ganatra's fantasy comedy sequel "Freaker Friday" (in theaters now). It is a Disney movie, so wholesomeness abounds, but is it actually for kids of all ages? Here's what parents need to know about "Freakier Friday" going in: Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox What is 'Freakier Friday' about? The new "Friday" runs back a bit of the plot from the original, where Anna and Tess swap bodies on the eve of the mom's wedding and better understand each other's lives. The sequel finds single mother Anna engaged to likable British chef Eric (Manny Jacinto) after just six months of dating, and surfer girl Harper and Eric's somewhat snooty daughter Lily don't get along at all. After a visit with an oddball fortune teller (Vanessa Bayer) during the bachelorette party, Anna switches with Harper while Tess ends up in Lily's body (and vice versa). While mother and daughter venture off on scooters to find the psychic – plus enjoy the metabolism and flexibility of having young bodies – the girls do their darnedest to try and ruin the wedding so they don't have to be stepsisters. What is the age rating of 'Freakier Friday'? "Freakier Friday" is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association "for thematic elements, rude humor, language and some suggestive references." But nothing's too extreme or scandalous, really. There's some singing of the Chumbawamba song "Tubthumping" that's got a slightly saucy word in the lyrics, though your kids might already know that from TikTok. Anna's old flame Jake (Chad Michael Murray) shows up, and Harper-as-Anna tries to come on to him in the most awkward way possible, though akin to The Outfield, Jake likes his girls a little bit older and hits on Lily-as-Tess. Is 'Freakier Friday' appropriate for kids? The first "Friday" was very much geared toward teens and tweens, and the same goes for the sequel. The main kid characters are teens navigating their parents getting remarried, so older children will be able to wrap their heads around that and are more apt to find that Anna's old band, Pink Slip, still slaps. "Freakier" is mostly fine for younger audiences; they just might find a lot of the serious convos and deeper family/parenting themes (plus one trip to the DMV) boring. That said, little kids often look up to their teen and tween siblings, so it might be a chance for some bonding time. The music is pretty cool and there are plenty of goofy moments that will appeal to little ones, like an epic schoolyard food fight, Tess testing out a lip plumper, and she and Anna doing highway jumps in Jake's sweet Camaro. Is there a 'Freakier Friday' popcorn bucket and cup? Yes! Popcorn buckets are all the rage these days with big theatrical releases, and the one for "Freakier Friday" really leans into the movie's body-swap theme. Marcus Theatres, a chain of cinemas with locations in 17 states, is selling collectible popcorn buckets and drink cups with swappable covers. So the popcorn bucket can be used for soda and the soda cup can be used for popcorn. Most Marcus locations have the items for sale now. (Here's a list of showtimes and locations on the chain's website.) They're not as cool as that gigantic light-up Galactus popcorn bucket, but certainly your kids might have some fun with them. Where can I watch 'Freakier Friday'? The "freakquel" is in theaters, and because of the high anticipation going in, it might be there for a while with no other major kid-friendly releases coming to cinemas soon. That means those hoping to stream it at home will have to wait a tick. If the movie follows a similar path as the recent Disney release "Lilo & Stitch," "Freakier Friday" will likely be available on demand in early to mid-October and on Disney+ in November. Dark Matter Season 2: Latest updates on release date, cast and plot details

By Aman Shukla Published on August 8, 2025, 17:30 IST Last updated August 8, 2025, 10:56 IST Dark Matter on Apple TV+ hooked sci-fi fans with its wild multiverse ride in 2024, and the buzz for Season 2 is electric. After a jaw-dropping Season 1 finale, everyone's dying to know what's next for the Dessen family. Here's the latest on when Season 2 might drop, who's returning, and what twists the plot could bring, all wrapped up in one spot for fans itching for answers. Release Date Speculation for Dark Matter Season 2 Apple TV+ gave Dark Matter the green light for Season 2 back in August 2024, hot on the heels of the Season 1 finale on June 26, 2024. No official release date has been locked in, but recent updates offer some hints. Filming started in February 2025, with Joel Edgerton and showrunner Blake Crouch sharing the news. Word from posts on X, like one from @SciFiScoop on August 3, 2025, says production just wrapped. Since Season 1 took roughly 20 months from filming start to premiere, Season 2 could land between fall 2025 and summer 2026. Most bets are on a spring or early summer 2026 premiere, but keep tabs on Apple TV+ for the official word as post-production rolls on. Returning Cast and New Faces for Dark Matter Season 2 The cast of Dark Matter Season 2 looks set to bring back the heavy hitters, with room for some fresh blood to spice up the multiverse. Here's the rundown on who's expected: Joel Edgerton as Jason Dessen, the physicist juggling multiple versions of himself. His knack for playing both hero and villain keeps fans glued. Jennifer Connelly as Daniela Dessen, the heart of the story, navigating love and loss across realities. Alice Braga as Amanda Lucas, whose Season 1 alliance with Jason #01 might lead to a bigger role. Oakes Fegley as Charlie Dessen, the son whose big choice in the finale sets up a wild new chapter. Jimmi Simpson as Ryan Holder, whose futuristic Chicago arc could take center stage. Amanda Brugel as Blaire Caplan, now a recurring player, suggesting more screen time. No new actors have been confirmed yet, but the multiverse opens the door for surprise characters. Picture alternate versions of familiar faces or entirely new players shaking things up. Updates from Apple TV+ should spill more details soon. What to Expect from Dark Matter Season 2 Season 1 of Dark Matter stuck close to Blake Crouch's 2016 novel, wrapping its main arc but leaving a massive cliffhanger. After Jason #01 reunited with Daniela and Charlie, they stepped into the Box to escape a swarm of rogue Jasons, with Charlie picking their next reality. That mystery destination sets Season 2 up for a fresh adventure. Since the novel's story is done, Season 2 ventures into uncharted territory. Blake Crouch, running the show, has teased a 'bolder exploration of the multiverse' with new worlds and challenges. Here's what might unfold: New Reality, New Problems : The Dessen family lands in a universe that could be paradise or a nightmare. Will they face new threats or struggle to fit in? Amanda and Ryan's Next Steps : Their Season 1 reunion in a futuristic world hints at a deeper dive into their story. Could they team up to navigate the Box? Wild Multiverse Worlds : From dystopian wastelands to high-tech utopias, the Box could unlock jaw-dropping settings that test the characters. Twists Galore: Crouch promises more shocks, with themes of survival, identity, and the choices that define us. Expect a mix of heart-pounding action, family drama, and brainy sci-fi that digs into what makes us human. The multiverse setup means anything's possible, and fans are already tossing around theories on X about where the story's headed. Pete Davidson Shares How Eddie Murphy Dropped ‘Simple' Parenting Tips

Pete Davidson is getting ready for fatherhood, and while many have offered him advice, his The Pickup co-star Eddie Murphy took a refreshingly laid-back approach. The Saturday Night Live alum shared Murphy's unexpected take on parenting, or lack thereof. Pete Davidson shares what advice Eddie Murphy gave him Pete Davidson is preparing for fatherhood, but his new co-star Eddie Murphy isn't handing out any elaborate parenting handbooks. During an August 6 appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Davidson opened up about becoming a first-time dad with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt. The comedian revealed that while many fellow dads have reached out to share their fatherhood insights, Murphy took a simpler approach. 'Eddie was like, 'I got no advice for you.' He goes, 'You're on your own,'' Davidson shared on the show. He added that Murphy emphasized how parenting is something each person figures out on their own. 'He was like, you know, 'You can't tell anyone how to do…' You know, you're gonna do your own thing.'' Host Seth Meyers chimed in with his own perspective, agreeing that parenting often feels intuitive. He said there's a 'refreshing moment' when new parents realize they know what to do instinctively. Meyers also offered Davidson some cheeky but relatable insight. 'When your friends are around, you realize, 'Oh, I'm being a little better than I am when people aren't around.'' Comparing it to performing, he added, 'We will take on the role of father, and then your friends leave, and your kids are like, 'What was that?' They're like, 'More of that, please.'' Davidson, who appeared genuinely excited, said, 'I've never been more excited for anything.' Before joking that he couldn't wait to use his baby as an excuse to bail on plans. As for working with Eddie Murphy in The Pickup, Davidson was over the moon. 'It was an absolute blast. I still can't believe I'm in it,' he said. The Pickup, which also stars Keke Palmer, is now streaming on Prime Video.
