Tshwane crime sweep targets hotspots, 361 arrested
This weekend's operation took place from July 5 in Mamelodi East.
According to SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Marinda Austin, the operation aimed at addressing crime in the metro.
The operation was a collaborative effort, comprising various law enforcement stakeholders, including SAPS members, the Department of Home Affairs, the Tshwane Metro Police Department, Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and representatives of the local Community Policing Forum.
Marinda emphasised that the combined efforts saw the police arrest 108 suspects for various criminal offences.
Detectives were responsible for the arrests of 253 suspects, including 85 suspects for gender-based violence-related offences, three for murder, and one for attempted murder and armed robbery. Ninety people were arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm or common assault, and five for rape.
She said that these results are a direct outcome of planning, strategic deployments, and heightened visibility aimed at reducing crime and continued tracking and tracing of wanted suspects.
'A roadblock with two operational teams deployed across the Mamelodi and Mamelodi East areas resulted in the detention of 41 undocumented foreign nationals, who are currently being processed by immigration authorities,' Marinda explained.
She said that during the operation, 1 100 individuals and 620 vehicles were searched.
A total of 27 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Marinda also highlighted that the results were achieved by the police during the patrols in crime hotspot areas during the operation.
'Targeted patrols were conducted at 18 identified crime hotspots, leading to further arrests and the issuing of fines, including 15 persons for public drinking. Two stolen vehicles were also recovered,' she said.
She added that the traffic enforcement units issued six Aarto infringement notices, totalling R3 750 in fines.
'Liquor compliance inspections were carried out at 18 establishments, resulting in 12 being closed for non-compliance,' she said.

Paul Apicella, from the neighbouring Paarl Street, said that the suspect had been walking the streets that morning, wielding what he described as a panga. 'The man was swinging the weapon around, screaming and ranting,' said Apicella. 'Pedestrians could be heard screaming and running in all directions. It was chaos, people locked themselves in their homes out of fear.' Shanwill da Costa, a local youth who had been living under the mentorship of the Tamil priest for the past four years, said that at about 13:30, Naidoo approached his assailant to calm the situation. 'Uncle Roy was standing in the road next to him, speaking in his characteristic calm manner. It seemed like the situation was simmering down,' said Da Costa. 'The suspect started swinging the weapon, and the next minute, Uncle Roy was on the ground. I tried to help, but could not get close enough. I felt incredibly helpless.' Koen confirmed that after the incident, the suspect fled into his home, barricading himself inside. 'Following a brief exchange of fire, SAPS members tactically breached the property,' he said. 'The man was found on his bed with a gunshot wound. He was arrested and taken to a local hospital for treatment.' Sitting in Naidoo's living room, Queenie said that her brother's home and Ashram (temple) have, for more than two decades, served as a beacon of hope for the community. 'Roy has served as a spiritual leader for 45 years, assisting weary souls with guidance and care,' she said. 'Despite not being in good health, he sourced food donations from local businesses to provide those in need with a weekly meal and a diligently packed food hamper. His life was dedicated to caring for everyone regardless of faith and culture.' She said that Roy's two children, as well as his surviving five siblings, are grappling to come to terms with his death. 'It would have been easier to accept his physical departure if it were due to natural causes,' she said. 'This burden is too heavy to carry. We leave Roy's attacker in the hands of God, for only He can judge.' A funeral service will be held at Naidoo's Caledon Street home tomorrow (August 2). Tragic end: Missing mother and toddler daughter found beheaded

Image: SAPS Two suspects, aged 43 and 32, have been arrested by the police in Limpopo for the brutal murder of a mother aged 34 and her two-year-old daughter. The woman and her daughter went missing on 19 May, sparking an extensive investigation by the police at Thohoyandou, Vhembe District, joined by the provincial team of investigators dealing with missing persons' cases. 'On Wednesday, a task team comprising SAPS Thohoyandou intervention team, Thohoyandou detectives, and provincial missing persons team followed a credible lead which led to the discovery of the body of the mother and her daughter,' said Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, provincial police spokesperson. 'As a result of this gruesome discovery, two suspects were linked to the incident, and were immediately arrested. During the process, it was also discovered that the bodies were without heads.' Police also established that one of the suspects is alleged to be the boyfriend of the deceased. 'The motive behind this heinous act of crime is still under investigation,' said Ledwaba. The duo was remanded in custody, and the matter was postponed to Tuesday for further investigations. Home Affairs dismisses more staff over sexual assault and fraud allegations The Department of Home Affairs has dismissed five officials with immediate effect for serious offences, including fraud and sexual assault, as part of its continued internal clean-up campaign. The total number of officials dismissed between July 2024 and July 2025 now stands at 38. In a statement issued on July 30, the department confirmed that eight of those dismissed have already been convicted and sentenced to prison terms ranging from four to 18 years. These latest disciplinary actions follow last month's breakthrough in Durban, where two department officials and three members of the public were arrested in connection with a fraudulent passport syndicate. 'These results demonstrate the growing success of Home Affairs in dealing with criminal syndicates both inside and outside the department,' the statement read. 'I repeat my warning to anyone involved in corruption: the days of defrauding this department or committing acts of sexual harassment or abuse while relying on long, drawn-out disciplinary processes are over.' The minister also praised committed staff members who have supported and accelerated internal disciplinary processes.
