Police noticed something rider wasn't doing

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Police have explained why they seized a bike after noticing what the cyclist wasn't doing. Officers from the North Flintshire policing team said the rider was seen on the 'modified' bike on Saturday. They say officers "paced" the bike - saying they clocked it at 22mph. The second factor that saw them intervene was that the rider wasn't pedalling. It saw officers stop the vehicle and it was then seized. Police admitted this is a "divisive subject" but said their actions are aimed at keeping the community safe. The policing team said: "The below bike has been seized by NPT today. It's a pedal bike which has been modified to include a throttle. We paced the bike at 22mph with the rider not pedalling at any point, the voltage and power of it is not displayed therefore it is not an EAPC (Electric assisted pedal cycle) which are legal. "It may have been a legal EAPC but has been modified and is now a motor vehicle and would require insurance. This is always a divisive subject but we do consistently receive complaints about modified bikes like this causing a risk to pedestrians and drivers." There are youngsters flying around in balaclava's on full blown off road battery bikes." Another added: "This looks like a person is just using it to get to work. Think you need to focus on the local rug rats, that prefer to intimidate others." In response to the first comment, police said: "Thanks for your comment, if you scroll back on our page you'll see we regularly do seize those types of bikes. In the past year we've taken around 20 off the roads. "In the past year almost weekly, we have appealed to our community for information on where the bikes are, we have utilised drones, cctv, traffic units and a multitude of other tactical options to deal with off road bikes being used on the roads / pavements. We have publicised this and been met with criticism that we should be doing other things, and leave these young people to 'have fun'. "We will continue to target ANY illegal motor vehicles using the road, pavement or highway with the aim of keeping our community safe." One person backing the force, said: "Strongly support. I'm a cyclist who sometimes uses a EAPC which meets the regulations. Max 250 W assistance cuts out at 15.5MPH and it won't assist unless you pedal it."
