Southern Railway upgrades nine-car to 12-car EMUs to accommodate more commuters and flexible operation of trains

The Hindu30-06-2025
The Southern Railway, in a bid to increase operational efficiency and to ensure flexibility in operating the electrical multiple unit (EMU) trains, has launched 12-car services on the north section. With this measure the Chennai Division of Southern Railway has upgraded the existing nine-car EMUs to 12-car trains in the suburban railway network in three of the four sections except the Velachery-Beach Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) section. The suburban trains are operated on west section from Moore Market complex to Arakkonam via Tiruvallur and Avadi, Beach to Chengalpattu via Tambaram and MMC to Gummidipoondi.
A senior official of Chennai division said in order to ease the heavy congestion for commuters and creating uniformity in the operation of rakes on all sections the north section has been upgraded with 12-car coaches. Previously 12-car EMUs were operated on the Tambaram-Brach and MMC-Tiruvallur sections. The upgrade to 12 cars would result in a 21% increase in seating capacity, effectively enabling to accommodate additional 4 lakh passengers daily and helping in passenger safety and comfort, he added.
The division operates nearly 630 services daily in the four sections and transports about 15 lakh passengers daily. The upgradation of 12 cars from nine cars would help in increasing the carrying capacity on the north section from 2,500 to 3,500 commuters per trip.
While the upgradation of the 12-car coaches in the north section would ease commuter congestion, the commuters want additional services to be operated ti Gummidipoondi, though services are available till Sullurpetta.
T. Dhanasekar, a regular commuter from Gummidipoondi, said the locality having become an industrial hub with the presence of several big industries in the SIPCOT complex and more than 20 revenue villages present on the section, it is requested for operating more trains, as north section has remained neglected for several years. He said MRTS has more train services than on the Gummidipoondi section.
Social activist S. Suresh Babu, who is another regular commuter on the Gummudipoondi suburban section, wanted the Southern Railway to equip the railway station with loop lines for faster turnaround which could help in increasing the train services. Also the residents of Gummidipoondi, Ponneri and Athipattu, which are known to house hundreds of heavy industries with lakhs of workers visiting the factories want doubling of tracks of third and fourth lines to be extended from Athipattu Pudhunagar to Gummudipoondi Railway Station. This extension would create dedicated tracks for local EMU trains, enhancing the frequency and reliability of services for commuters traveling to and from Gummudipoondi.
A senior railway official said a new loop line at Gummidipoondi railway station for faster turnaround is planned to be executed as part of signal modernisation work and is proposed to be completed by August this year.

Mumbai to get 238 new AC locals with creature comforts

MUMBAI: Cushioned seats, chillier coaches, mobile charging points and a quicker ride – commuting on Mumbai's local trains will feel a lot like travelling on the metro. Once tenders are invited, it will take three to six months to appoint a private contractor to manufacture the new AC locals. (Photo by Bachchan Kumar/ HT PHOTO) (HT PHOTO / REPRESENTATIVE IMAGE) These perks have been promised by the railway authorities in a set of 238 new air-conditioned (AC) local trains to be rolled out on both suburban railway lines in around 3 years. While inaugurating a series of infrastructure projects of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), on Thursday, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis drew a parallel between the new AC locals and metro coaches. 'Existing coaches will be replaced by AC coaches, with closed doors similar to the metro rail. I have requested the railway minister (Ashwini Vaishnaw) not to hike ticket fares while introducing these new AC local trains,' said Fadnavis, during the event held at Bandra Kurla Complex. Railway officials said the new AC local trains, to be procured under MUTP-3 and 3A at a cost of ₹19,293 crore, will be vestibuled. This is in sharp contrast to the existing 12-car AC locals, which are divided into six-vestibule coaches. Each new train will be one single vestibule of 12 coaches. 'The tender will be for 2,856 AC coaches, which will constitute 12-car suburban trains. We will be floating tenders for these AC local trains very soon,' said Vilas Wadekar, chairperson and managing director, Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC). This will also offer scope to expand into 15-car AC locals, which cannot be done easily now as the trains are divided into six-vestibule coaches. The air-conditioned vendor compartments will be positioned at both ends of the new trains. The new AC trains are likely to be fitted with cushioned seats instead of the existing steel ones. Commuters have complained that the air-conditioning makes the steel seats uncomfortably cold. The coaches will also be equipped with mobile charging points next to every seat, similar to the set-up in metro trains. Another big plus – they will also be fitted with infotainment sets. The electric powering of the new AC locals will be increased from 33% at present, to 50%. Rail officials said this will result in quicker acceleration and deceleration. The quicker speed will compensate for the 15-20 seconds lost waiting for the doors to open and close at railway stations. 'For the first time, an EMU (local train) will have a speed potential of 130 kmph, which we plan to introduce through these new AC local trains. At present, these trains have a potential to run at 100-110 kmph. This will help on the Fast corridor,' said a railway official. Two EMU car sheds will be built for the 238 new AC locals, one at Bhivpuri on the Central Railway and the other at Vangaon on the Western Railway. They will be solely operated by the private manufacturer. Once tenders are invited, it will take three to six months to appoint a private contractor to manufacture these AC locals. It would take 2 years to manufacture a prototype, followed by various formalities before the AC coaches are manufactured.

Southern Railway to bear Chennai MRTS operational costs for two years during CMRL takeover

CHENNAI: Southern Railway has announced that it will bear the operating costs of Chennai-Velachery MRTS for two years during the transfer of assets and operations to the state government and merger with Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). During this period, the railways will also provide the necessary coaches and handle maintenance at no charge. 'If the takeover is not completed within two years, SR may continue to operate the MRTS, but the TN government will be charged for operations and maintenance based on actual costs,' said an official railway statement on Tuesday. As part of the transition plan, the train rakes (Electric Multiple Units) owned by the railways will be used in the MRTS for the two-year grace period. 'After this, the EMUs will either be returned to SR or the TN government will pay their depreciated value,' the statement added. During this transition, Southern Railway will support CMRL by training its personnel in operations and maintenance of infrastructure, rolling stock, and other functions. Current railway staff will continue to be deployed during this phase at no cost to the state government. Meanwhile, CMRL will also recruit and train its own staff and develop the necessary maintenance infrastructure. Certain stretches of SR infrastructure-such as the yards at Fort and Chennai Beach-will continue to be used by MRTS in the future. Access terms and related charges will be decided by a joint committee comprising representatives from SR and the TN government. The Railway Board approved the transfer of MRTS on July 31. The approval includes the transfer of all MRTS infrastructure assets — tracks, bridges, signaling systems, electrification, land, buildings, and more — as well as operations and maintenance responsibilities to the Tamil Nadu government/CMRL. A detailed MoU is being prepared, said the railways. The statement noted that land owned by TN government and in use by MRTS will be returned, while railway-owned land in operational use by MRTS will be leased to the state government.
