Mumbai to get 238 new AC locals with creature comforts
These perks have been promised by the railway authorities in a set of 238 new air-conditioned (AC) local trains to be rolled out on both suburban railway lines in around 3 years.
While inaugurating a series of infrastructure projects of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), on Thursday, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis drew a parallel between the new AC locals and metro coaches. 'Existing coaches will be replaced by AC coaches, with closed doors similar to the metro rail. I have requested the railway minister (Ashwini Vaishnaw) not to hike ticket fares while introducing these new AC local trains,' said Fadnavis, during the event held at Bandra Kurla Complex.
Railway officials said the new AC local trains, to be procured under MUTP-3 and 3A at a cost of ₹19,293 crore, will be vestibuled. This is in sharp contrast to the existing 12-car AC locals, which are divided into six-vestibule coaches. Each new train will be one single vestibule of 12 coaches.
'The tender will be for 2,856 AC coaches, which will constitute 12-car suburban trains. We will be floating tenders for these AC local trains very soon,' said Vilas Wadekar, chairperson and managing director, Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC). This will also offer scope to expand into 15-car AC locals, which cannot be done easily now as the trains are divided into six-vestibule coaches. The air-conditioned vendor compartments will be positioned at both ends of the new trains.
The new AC trains are likely to be fitted with cushioned seats instead of the existing steel ones. Commuters have complained that the air-conditioning makes the steel seats uncomfortably cold. The coaches will also be equipped with mobile charging points next to every seat, similar to the set-up in metro trains. Another big plus – they will also be fitted with infotainment sets.
The electric powering of the new AC locals will be increased from 33% at present, to 50%. Rail officials said this will result in quicker acceleration and deceleration. The quicker speed will compensate for the 15-20 seconds lost waiting for the doors to open and close at railway stations.
'For the first time, an EMU (local train) will have a speed potential of 130 kmph, which we plan to introduce through these new AC local trains. At present, these trains have a potential to run at 100-110 kmph. This will help on the Fast corridor,' said a railway official.
Two EMU car sheds will be built for the 238 new AC locals, one at Bhivpuri on the Central Railway and the other at Vangaon on the Western Railway. They will be solely operated by the private manufacturer. Once tenders are invited, it will take three to six months to appoint a private contractor to manufacture these AC locals. It would take 2 years to manufacture a prototype, followed by various formalities before the AC coaches are manufactured.

ITR Filing 2025: Only 30 Days Left; Will The Deadline Be Extended Again?
Last Updated: The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry asked the CBDT to extend the ITR filing deadline for AY 2025-26 due to delays in utility releases and software updates. ITR Deadline: Taxpayers may get more time to file their returns if the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI's)request to extend the due date is accepted. In a letter to the CBDT as per ET Wealth report, the chamber said the ITR filing process for AY 2025–26 has been hit by delays in the release of utilities, arriving nearly three months later than usual. Many forms were still unavailable in early August, leaving little time for preparation. Frequent changes to utilities and slow software updates add to the strain, especially in areas with patchy internet. GCCI has also pushed for a new deadline for tax audits, currently set at September 30. It's important to note that although the central government extended the ITR filing deadline for individuals not subject to a tax audit from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025, the move offered limited relief. The ITR forms were released much later than usual, leaving taxpayers with little extra time to prepare and file. This is the key reason why the GCCI has submitted its representation seeking a further extension. The chamber added that frequent changes to the utilities, coupled with poor internet access in several regions, have left taxpayers and professionals with limited time to ensure accurate filings, as per ET Wealth report. It has also requested an extension of the September 30 deadline for tax audit reports. For Assessment Year 2025–26, the dates of release for the latest Income Tax Return (ITR) utilities and forms are as follows: ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, and ITR-4 were all released on between May, June and July. ITR-5 was released on 8 August 2025. ITR-6 Excel Utility was released on 15 August 2025. ITR-7 has not yet been released. Form 3CA-3CD was released on 29 July 2025. Form 3CB-3CD was released on 29 July 2025. Different Deadlines For Taxpayers: September 15 Deadline For Those Who Don't Require Audit The tax department has extended the deadline for those taxpayers who don't require audit to file the taxes. The changes in income tax forms, new slabs under new income tax and capital gain taxes have prompted the department to extend the dates. Who Can File ITR By October 31, 2025? Taxpayers whose accounts need to be audited—such as companies, proprietorships, and working partners in firms—have until October 31, 2025, to file their income tax returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26). Before they can do that, they must ensure their audit report is submitted by September 30, 2025. As of now, the Income Tax Department has not announced any extension to this deadline. Deadline for Those with International Dealings If a taxpayer is involved in international transactions or certain specified domestic transactions, they are required to submit a report under Section 92E. In this case, the due date for filing ITR is November 30, 2025. To stick to this timeline, their audit report must be submitted by October 31, 2025. Just like in other categories, the government has not given any update about extending this due date. About the Author Business Desk First Published: August 15, 2025, 16:53 IST

‘Maharashtra's role integral to country's growth': CM Devendra Fadnavis reaffirms commitment to development
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Friday that the state will play a significant role in realising the 'Viksit Bharat' vision and will rise to the challenge of shouldering the responsibility to make the country self-reliant. 'Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country is marching forward. In just a short span of a decade, it has emerged as the fourth-largest global economy. Maharashtra's role is integral to this growth. The role of Viksit Maharashtra in Viksit Bharat is significant,' Fadnavis said, hoisting the national flag at Mantralaya on the 79th Independence Day. Addressing the gathering, Fadnavis said that Maharashtra leads in infrastructure development and investments, and has to come forward to shoulder PM Modi's clarion call for an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'. Maharashtra has a huge potential which has to be tapped to contribute to national growth, he observed. 'Forty per cent of the total foreign direct investment comes to Maharashtra. This helps in generating new avenues of employment. The state has focused on skill development, human resources and education. The state has already taken the lead with startups. Through skill development, it will equip individuals to meet industrial requirements. This will open the doors for employment,' Fadnavis said. Referring to Operation Sindoor, Fadnavis said, 'Our armed forces have shown their power and might to the world. Through discipline and precision, the armed forces demolished the terror hubs in Pakistan and gave a befitting reply to our enemies.' Reiterating the state government's commitment to the agriculture sector, Fadnavis said, 'By shifting the agriculture sector to solar power, we will ensure uninterrupted 12-hour electricity to farmers in the day.' This project will be completed by December 2026, and the state will accomplish 100 per cent green energy. Fadnavis also mentioned the Wainganga-Nalganga river-linking project, saying the surplus water will be diverted to the Godavari Basin, and this would help tackle drought in the Marathwada region. 'We are also exploring the use of artificial intelligence in the agriculture sector to help farmers,' he added. Fadnavis also spoke about how the police and security forces have worked to maintain law and order in Maharashtra. 'Police forces have worked to make Gadchiroli Naxal-free. The Naxal tag has been wiped away. The tribal district of Gadchiroli is now set to become India's steel hub,' he said. Fadnavis also highlighted numerous mega projects across sectors such as roads, airports, and ports, including the Vadhavan Port, new airports at Nagpur, Pune, Mumbai, etc, the Samruddhi Mahamarg and Shaktipeeth Mahamarg, etc.

‘Third' and ‘Fourth' Mumbai to power $1.5 trillion MMR economy; City can surpass Dubai in 10 years: Devendra Fadnavis
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Mumbai is poised for a major transformation, with plans to develop 'third' and 'fourth' Mumbai as new economic growth hubs(CREDAI-MCHI ) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said Mumbai is poised for a major transformation, with plans to develop 'third' and 'fourth' Mumbai as new economic growth hubs, supported by world-class infrastructure, high-speed connectivity, and an upcoming innovation city designed to rival global centres. He said the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has the potential to become a $1.5 trillion economy. 'We can build a city even bigger than Dubai and even better than that in Mumbai. This is our potential. The transformation is possible within the next 10 years,' Fadnavis said at a CREDAI-MCHI event marking a change of guard, where Sukhraj Nahar, chairman of Nahar Group, was appointed as the body's 18th president for 2025–2027. Fadnavis questions real estate developers over rising housing prices in Mumbai Fadnavis told the developers that "the government is fully committed to working hand-in-hand with the real estate sector to make this vision a reality' but expressed concern over soaring property prices in Mumbai, noting that despite offering multiple concessions to the real estate sector, including premium reductions, home prices continue to climb. "Over the last 10 years, whenever we've claimed that housing will be affordable, the price of housing has increased in Mumbai. Even after reducing the premium, the housing prices have not come down. We expected that building Coastal Road or Atal Setu would lower the price, but instead, it has skyrocketed after construction," said the Maharashtra CM. Further, there are plans to extend the road up to Dahisar and from there to Virar. The MMR Region has the potential to become even $1.5 trillion," Fadnavis said while speaking at the event. Speaking about ease of doing business, he noted that "The World Bank appreciated our efforts to bring ease of doing business in Mumbai, and if you look at the World Bank report, it actually appreciated the efforts taken by the government and BMC to bring ease of doing business, but still, I agree we have to do more." CREDAI-MCHI on August 14 also announced the new management committee for the next two years. "This change of guard marks not only a leadership transition but also the beginning of a transformational phase for the real estate ecosystem in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR)," the body said in a statement. Now, we must also build its soul. Mission CARES is our declaration to the government, home buyers, and our own conscience, that we will develop with empathy, digitise with purpose, green our cities with urgency, and ensure every home is accessible and dignified. This is a pivotal moment to move beyond rhetoric and deliver real, measurable impact.' "At CREDAI-MCHI, we are pushing for single-window clearances, rationalised premiums, and tech-led approvals. Prop Tech will enable AI-driven project tracking and blockchain-backed compliance, making the process faster and more transparent. The shift from paperwork to real-time systems is critical. Every rupee saved in friction is a rupee that builds scale, trust, and better homes. Because at the end, building better homes is about building a stronger India together," Keval Valambhia, COO, MCHI-CREDAI, said.
