PHILADELPHIA — A needy Mets lineup could receive a boost as soon as Monday.
Mark Vientos, who has been sidelined since June 2 with a right hamstring strain, is expected to play with Triple-A Syracuse through Sunday before the Mets decide whether to activate him.

If Vientos checks off every box and feels good, he could rejoin the team in time for the start of the Braves series at Citi Field on Monday, manager Carlos Mendoza said.
Vientos played in his third rehab game Friday, started at third base for a second time and ripped a three-run double, though statistically he has not started strong in going 1-for-10 in his first minor league at-bats.

He will get at least two more days to find his timing at the plate.

He did not start this season hot, with a .678 OPS in his first 53 games, though his upside is obvious after his breakout 2024 campaign and remarkable postseason.
Whenever Vientos is ready, the Mets will have a decision to make at third base.

Brett Baty had cooled off before his groin forced him to miss the entire Braves series, though Baty returned to the lineup and played third as Friday's series began at Citizens Bank Park.
Ronny Mauricio has not run with an opportunity.
The talented 24-year-old entered play with a .591 OPS in his first 13 games.

There was no immediate update on reliever Max Kranick, who was placed on the injured list Thursday with a strain in his right elbow.

He had returned to New York for an MRI exam, and as of Friday afternoon, Mendoza said he was still waiting to learn the results.
To make roster space for starting pitcher Blade Tidwell, the Mets optioned righty Justin Hagenman to Syracuse.

Hagenman had been expected to start Friday until he was needed Thursday for 2 ²/₃ scoreless innings in relief.

Brooks Raley was expected to pitch in his second rehab game with Low-A St. Lucie on Friday, Mendoza said.
The lefty, recovering from Tommy John surgery and signed in-season, on Tuesday threw a scoreless inning while allowing one hit and striking out two.
'The first outing was good,' Mendoza said, adding that Raley's fastball was 88-89 mph and touched 91 mph.

Rafael Devers explains why he is willing to play first base for the Giants but not the Red Sox

SAN FRANCISCO — Rafael Devers had a consistent mantra when he addressed the Boston media for the first time since his surprising trade from the Red Sox to the San Francisco Giants five days ago. 'The past is in the past,' Devers said repeatedly Friday when asked about his time with the Red Sox and why the relationship deteriorated so much this season that the team traded him less than two years into a 10-year, $313.5 million contract he signed in 2023.

Pete Alonso Makes Admission After Mets' Seventh Straight Loss

Pete Alonso Makes Admission After Mets' Seventh Straight Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets were battered 10-2 by the surging Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night, a loss that not only extended their losing streak to seven games but also stripped them of first place in the National League East. Advertisement The Mets entered this season with bold ambitions, fueled by offseason acquisitions, including the record-breaking signing of outfielder Juan Soto. But midway through the summer, that promise is cracking under pressure. Thursday's loss marked another example of the club unraveling on both sides of the ball—unable to generate offense in key moments, and increasingly error-prone in the field. New York's lineup scattered a handful of hits but failed to sustain any meaningful rally. Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil each homered, providing the only offensive spark in an otherwise disjointed effort. New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso (20).© Brad Penner-Imagn Images As a team, the Mets left runners stranded in scoring position multiple times, a recurring theme in this slump. Soto, who has yet to deliver with consistency during this stretch, went hitless in run-producing opportunities and looked visibly frustrated at the plate. Advertisement In his postgame media session, Pete Alonso offered a candid assessment of the team's situation. 'We're not necessarily in sync on either side of the ball right now,' Alonso said. 'We're not playing clean baseball, we're not playing up to our potential. It's not our standard. It's been a poor showing the past 7 games.' His words reflect the sentiment growing among fans and players alike: this isn't just a slump—it's an identity crisis. Blade Tidwell, the Mets' top pitching prospect, started on the mound and allowed four runs in under four innings. Though his command wavered, the loss was hardly his alone. The bullpen followed with a disastrous outing, surrendering six additional runs as the game slipped into blowout territory. Advertisement The Mets now find themselves in a precarious position. What started as a rough week has become a full-blown free fall. New York needs a reset—mentally, tactically, and emotionally. The margin for error in a division race is razor-thin, and with the Phillies now atop the standings, the Mets must find a way to respond before the season's trajectory slips further. Zack Wheeler Had Words for Juan Soto After Mets' Loss to Phillies

Zack Wheeler Had Words for Juan Soto After Mets' Loss to Phillies originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets lost their seventh straight game on Friday, falling to the Philadelphia Phillies in an important NL East matchup. These two teams entered the weekend with identical records, so this victory moved Philadelphia ahead of New York for sole possession of first place in the division. Advertisement Philadelphia turned to ace right-hander Zack Wheeler for the series opener against New York. Pitching five scoreless innings, Wheeler surrendered just four hits while striking out eight hitters. Wheeler ended with a no-decision, but it was another strong outing for the veteran right-hander, and one that vaulted Philadelphia into first place. Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler (45)Dennis Lee-Imagn Images Wheeler is amid another Cy Young-caliber season. With five scoreless frame against New York, he lowered his season ERA to 2.61 which ranks fifth in the National League. Having spent his entire career in the NL East, Wheeler has a lot of history with Mets outfielder Juan Soto. The two have been division rivals dating back to Soto's time with the Washington Nationals, and Wheeler was asked about this after the game. Advertisement "He's a competitor," he said of Soto. "I'm a competitor. I always enjoy facing him." For his career, Soto is 13-for-48 against Wheeler with two home runs (via StatMuse). Soto finished Friday's game 0-for-2 with two walks. Like many of his teammates, the left-handed slugger is amid a slump. Over his last seven games, Soto is just 4-for-23 (.174) with one home run and two RBIs. On the season, he is hitting .246 with 14 home runs and 37 RBIs. While he has never won the award, Wheeler has finished second in Cy Young voting twice (2021, 2024). He is also a two-time All-Star, and very likely headed toward a third this season. The 35-year-old is in his 11th MLB season.
