The New York Mets lost their seventh straight game on Friday, falling to the Philadelphia Phillies in an important NL East matchup. These two teams entered the weekend with identical records, so this victory moved Philadelphia ahead of New York for sole possession of first place in the division.

Philadelphia turned to ace right-hander Zack Wheeler for the series opener against New York. Pitching five scoreless innings, Wheeler surrendered just four hits while striking out eight hitters.
Wheeler ended with a no-decision, but it was another strong outing for the veteran right-hander, and one that vaulted Philadelphia into first place.

Wheeler is amid another Cy Young-caliber season. With five scoreless frame against New York, he lowered his season ERA to 2.61 which ranks fifth in the National League.
Having spent his entire career in the NL East, Wheeler has a lot of history with Mets outfielder Juan Soto. The two have been division rivals dating back to Soto's time with the Washington Nationals, and Wheeler was asked about this after the game.

"He's a competitor," he said of Soto. "I'm a competitor. I always enjoy facing him."
For his career, Soto is 13-for-48 against Wheeler with two home runs (via StatMuse).
Soto finished Friday's game 0-for-2 with two walks. Like many of his teammates, the left-handed slugger is amid a slump. Over his last seven games, Soto is just 4-for-23 (.174) with one home run and two RBIs. On the season, he is hitting .246 with 14 home runs and 37 RBIs.
While he has never won the award, Wheeler has finished second in Cy Young voting twice (2021, 2024). He is also a two-time All-Star, and very likely headed toward a third this season. The 35-year-old is in his 11th MLB season.

The ball got rolling under Matt Campbell, and that came after the end of the Tim Beckman era. Now, Toledo has gone the last 15 years without a losing season. Georgia can't make that claim. Neither can Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn State, Texas, Oregon, LSU, and just about every other team you can think of. And that's what makes Toledo so maddening at times. It blew out Mississippi State 41-17 in Starkville last season, and lost to Akron. It didn't play for the MAC title, and it beat Pitt in the wackiest bowl game of the postseason. There are losses on both sides of the ball, and the offensive front has to be far better, but the schedule isn't bad, and no Power Four school has snatched up Candle yet, Ho hum, it'll be another great season of Toledo football. Also coming in is Kenji Christian, a big back who started at Virginia Tech and ripped it up for North Carolina A&T before getting hurt last year. Toledo Rockets Preview 2025: Defense - For the most part, the defense was fine. It allowed fewer than 28 points nine times, had a good pass rush, and forced plenty of takeaways. If the offense can be a little better, and do a stronger job of controlling the clock, the D will be better, but ... Advertisement - The line has to replace Darius Alexander and Cavon Butler, and now the bulk is missing. There are veterans ready to step up, though, with Martez Ponyter and Esean Carter the key backups last season. Malachi Davis did a decent job in a rotation on the end, and Anthony Dunn was second on the team with four sacks. - The transfer portal is helping the linebacking corps. Langston Long (USF) is a quick option who should make plenty of tackles in the middle if he can stay healthy, and Louce Julien (UMass) made five sacks with 43 tackles last year in Amherst. - The secondary is the team's biggest strength. The corner combination of Avery Smith and Nasir Bowers might be the best in the MAC. Smith made 58 tackles, broke up 14 passes, and picked off two passes. This should be the most dangerous game in a workable MAC schedule, and it comes on the road.
