The 10 cities best prepared for a ‘smart city future'
Atlanta beat out coastal tech havens like San Jose, California, and Boston to rank as the top U.S. city for a 'smart city future' in ProptechOS' 2025 Smart City Index.
The annual ranking is based on metrics related to each city's tech infrastructure and connectivity, sustainability and tech job market.
'Some of the benefits of scoring highly on these metrics for local citizens are that they can enjoy better public services, transport, security, economic opportunities and less air pollution,' according to ProptechOS, a software company based in Stockholm.
Atlanta climbed from 10th place in last year's index, where Seattle took the top spot.

In the latest ranking, Atlanta scored 88 out of 100 for tech infrastructure and 82 for its tech job market, with 643 tech jobs advertised per 10,000 people, according to the study.
'Atlanta has the fourth-highest internet download and upload speeds of any major U.S. city,' ProptechOS stated. 'Relative to its population size, Atlanta also boasts the third-highest number of companies dedicated to the Internet of Things (IoT) and the fifth-highest number of artificial intelligence companies.'
Atlanta has long been on a path toward strengthening its smart city status, joining the White House's Smart Cities Initiative in 2015 and partnering with the Georgia Institute of Technology on smart city initiatives to ease traffic congestion, promote public safety and improve the city's environmental sustainability. The city's North Avenue Smart Corridor Project was recognized by the International Smart City Expo as a 'living lab for active, multi-modal traffic management through technology deployment and data analytics.'
Atlanta also met its Better Buildings Challenge goal two years ahead of schedule, reducing the city's energy consumption by 20% in 2019 and saving 1.3 billion gallons of water.
In May 2024 the city began enhancing its customer-facing digital products, including station screens and the mobile app for its Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, a project expected to wrap up this June.
While Atlanta dominated overall in the 2025 Smart City Index, San Francisco topped the list of cities with the best environmental metrics, in part due to its number and density of EV charging stations and LEED-certified green buildings. Oakland, California, scored highest on the index (98 out of 100) for its number of tech jobs, with 889 tech jobs per 10,000 people — enough tech jobs for approximately 10% of the city's population, according to the study.
The index also ranked European smart cities in 2025, awarding Paris top billing, followed by Stockholm; Amsterdam; Munich; and Lisbon, Portugal.

State Farm homeowners insurance rates to surge 27% in Illinois
This story was originally published on Smart Cities Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Smart Cities Dive newsletter. Dive Brief: State Farm is increasing homeowners insurance rates in Illinois by 27%, with new rates reflected in existing policies starting Aug. 15. Illinois state leaders called it the 'largest single rate hike in recent history' and said it would add an average of $750 annually to homeowners' insurance bills. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker called the rate hike 'unfair and arbitrary' and urged state lawmakers to 'enact a legislative solution' to prevent insurers from making 'severe and unnecessary' rate hikes in the state. Nationwide, increases in home insurance premiums, driven in part by a rise in climate-related disasters, are adding to the rising cost of homeownership. Dive Insight: Home insurance premiums in the U.S. soared 57% from 2019 to 2024, according to Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies, citing data from the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. The sharpest increases were in areas more vulnerable to climate disasters, such as Florida, according to JCHS. Some insurance companies have ceased selling homeowners insurance in more vulnerable areas. Shop Top Mortgage Rates A quicker path to financial freedom Your Path to Homeownership Personalized rates in minutes State Farm said for every $1 it earned in Illinois in 2024, it paid out $1.26, a loss it credited to an increase in severe weather and increased material and labor costs for repairs or reconstruction. The company said hail damage alone was responsible for $638 million in damages it paid in the state last year. The insurance company said its rate hike is in line with what other insurance companies have done. 'Over the last three years, many insurers have raised Homeowners rates, citing deteriorating loss trends in Illinois,' the company stated. In February, Allstate raised homeowners insurance rates in Illinois 14.3%, but it insures fewer homes in the state compared with State Farm. State Farm also recently increased homeowners insurance rates in California, where insurers must receive approval from an elected insurance commissioner to increase premiums. State Farm asked for a 30% rate increase but was granted an emergency 17% increase, which went into effect June 1. While Illinois has seen more intense rain events in recent years, state leaders argued the state's weather is not as extreme as in other states and questioned whether State Farm's increase was to pay off losses it felt in other states. 'Illinois premiums are priced for the risk in this state — not for losses in other states, including wildfires, earthquakes, or hurricanes,' State Farm stated. The $400 Billion Blind Spot: Why Autonomous Endpoint Management is the Only Way Enterprises Will Survive the Apocalypse
BOSTON, MA / ACCESS Newswire / August 15, 2025 / 'Every enterprise leader claims to have a digital transformation strategy. Yet, behind the boardroom bravado, a silent crisis is draining billions from the world's largest companies. The culprit? A tidal wave of devices-laptops, tablets, phones, IoT sensors-sprawling across continents, each one a potential point of failure. According to IoT Analytics, by 2030, the number of connected devices will soar from 16.6 billion to 40 billion, turning endpoint management into a logistical nightmare (IoT Analytics, 2023). The cost of this chaos is staggering. Global downtime now burns through $400 billion a year, with every minute offline costing $9,000 (Splunk, 2023). Yet most organizations still rely on slow, reactive, and generic endpoint management tools-paying an invisible tax of over $50 billion in operations and $275 billion in lost productivity every year. Shirish Nimgaonkar, Founder and CEO of eBlissAI, doesn't mince words: 'Enterprises are fighting 21st-century endpoint complexity with 20th-century tools. The cost isn't just financial-it's existential. If you can't manage your endpoints, you can't scale your AI. And if you can't scale your AI, you're already behind.' The Boardroom Power Shift CIOs and CTOs have never been more central to the enterprise agenda. According to the Wall Street Journal, sixty-three percent now report directly to the CEO-a leap driven by the promise of AI and the demand for business outcomes (WSJ, 2024). But with that influence comes a new kind of pressure: deliver measurable ROI, or risk being replaced. Boards are no longer satisfied with pilots and proofs of concept. They want AI that moves the needle-now. The AI Adoption Paradox The AI gold rush is in full swing. McKinsey reports that seventy-eight percent of companies have adopted AI in at least one function, but only 1% have managed to scale it across the enterprise to generate tangible ROI (McKinsey, 2023). Most see cost savings under 10% and revenue increase bumps below 5% (WSJ, 2023). The reason? AI pilots are easy. Enterprise-wide impact is hard. The focus must shift to repeatable, scalable outcomes. The Endpoint Management Revolution The answer lies in autonomous endpoint management. Instead of relying on armies of IT staff to manually patch, update, and secure devices, agentic AI can now manage endpoints at scale-predicting disruptions before they happen, automating issue resolution, and continuously optimizing performance. 'AI for AI's sake is meaningless. What enterprises need is AI that works quietly in the background, delivering measurable productivity gains and reducing costs at scale. That's the promise eBlissAI fulfills,' says Nimgaonkar. Early adopters have seen dramatic results: up to 90% reduction in system downtime, 95% improvement in threat detection, and a 70% drop in operational costs (IT News Online, 2024). According to IT News Online, eBlissAI delivers ROI up to 45x higher than traditional solutions. The New Mandate for CIOs The message is clear: enterprises that fail to adapt will be left behind. 'eBlissAI isn't just another platform-it's the CIO's co-pilot in the age of AI. We deliver a bold promise: tangible, differentiated business outcomes in a defined time period,' Nimgaonkar asserts. The age of autonomous endpoint management has arrived. The only question is: will your enterprise survive the coming apocalypse-or become another casualty of the $400 billion blind spot?
