Ministry of Earth Sciences underscores critical role of India's vast marine resources
Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) has launched a white paper titled "Transforming India's Blue Economy: Investment, Innovation and Sustainable Growth" in collaboration with its strategic knowledge partner. As the nodal agency for the implementation of the Blue Economy in India, MoES, has been actively working towards enhancing the visibility and effective implementation of blue economy initiatives across the nation. This white paper builds upon these efforts by providing a consolidated framework that aligns government actions, fosters cross-sectoral synergies, and promotes greater investment to unlock the vast potential of India's ocean resources for sustainable and economic development.
The report underscores the critical role of India's vast marine resources, including its extensive coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone, as a vital engine for national progress. It highlights the collaborative efforts of 25 ministries, alongside coastal state and union territory initiatives, in driving sustainable growth across various ocean-related sectors. The report builds upon India's G20 Presidency commitments and the Chennai High-Level Principles for a Sustainable and Resilient Blue Economy, further solidifying its importance within the Viksit Bharat vision for 2047.
While acknowledging significant sectoral progress, the white paper emphasises the need for a unified and coordinated approach to overcome existing challenges. It identifies key impediments to growth, limited data sharing, low private investment, and technology gaps, particularly in emerging areas like offshore wind and deep-sea exploration. It highlights pragmatic interventions and highlights scalable and replicable models from across India, including women-led seaweed farming, smart port development, and green ship recycling, demonstrating the potential for achieving both economic growth and environmental sustainability.

GVMC prepares 27-point agenda for June 6 council meeting
Officials from the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) have prepared a 27-point agenda, mostly on development of theme park, construction of drains, roads, pipelines etc., for the council meeting scheduled to be held on June 6. The corporation has also proposed to recruit seasonal manpower to engage in anti-larval operations during the monsoon. Sources from the corporation said that several Corporators, MLAs from the NDA have asked the GVMC to add some more important proposals for the council meeting. It may be remembered that the last council meeting was held during December 2024. This will be the first council meeting after the NDA leaders took over as Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Meanwhile, Corporator of Ward 22, (JSP) P.L.V.N. Murthy has submitted a representation to the District Collector, in-charge Commissioner of GVMC, M.N. Harendhira Prasad to incorporate sessions or discussions on TDRs, chicken meat wastage collection and dumps, smart city project allocations, revenue shops leases and allotments, G20 works allocations, issues pertaining to night food court. CPI(M) Corporator (Ward 78) B. Ganga Rao also urged the authorities to discuss encroachments of the GVMC parks, resurvey of proposed property tax hike and other topics.

Climate Change Performance Index 2025: Where India Stands
The 2025 Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) has revealed a stark reality. It said no country has met all the criteria for a top overall rating. As a result, the top three positions on the list remain vacant. 'No country performs well enough in all index categories to achieve an overall very high rating. The first three overall positions, therefore, remain empty,' the CCPI report stated. The report added that the high-ranking countries must continue to intensify their actions to help limit global warming to well below 2°C, with 1.5°C as the ideal target. GHG Emissions, Renewable Energy, Energy Use and Climate Policy are the four areas in which the effectiveness of climate mitigation was evaluated. Denmark leads the pack as the highest-ranked country, holding the 4th position with an overall score of 78.37. The nation does well, particularly in renewable energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions management, while achieving a moderate rating in energy consumption. The Netherlands and the United Kingdom hold 5th and 6th on the list, respectively. Meanwhile, the bottom 10 countries in the 2025 CCPI include the Islamic Republic of Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, with scores ranging from 17.47 to 39.23. India's ranking India secured the 10th spot in this year's CCPI rankings, marking a slight drop from previous years but maintaining its status among the better performers globally. According to the report, the country scores high in greenhouse gas emissions and energy use, medium in climate policy, but low in renewable energy. It also stated that India has made strong strides in expanding renewable energy, particularly solar power. Large-scale solar projects and the Rooftop Solar Scheme have seen progress, alongside growing adoption of electric vehicles, especially two-wheelers. But coal remains a major energy source, stated the report, with India among the top holders of coal reserves and planning increased production. Even UK among top performers The report stated that it assesses 63 countries and the EU, 'which together account for over 90% of global greenhouse gas emissions.' While India and the UK are among the few G20 nations on track with relatively low per capita emissions, other major emitters such as China (ranked 55), the United States (ranked 57), Canada (ranked 62), and the United Arab Emirates (ranked 65) lag. According to the report, the United Kingdom has significantly improved its position, rising to 6th place in the current CCPI rankings. The UK scores high in greenhouse gas emissions and energy use, holds a medium rating in climate policy, but ranks low in renewable energy. 'Attack on India's soul won't be accepted': Supriya Sule in Ethiopia backs zero tolerance on terror
Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SCP) MP Supriya Sule, who is leading the all-party Indian delegation visiting Ethiopia, met with former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on Saturday and discussed bilateral cooperation, regional development, and the global fight against terrorism. Speaking after the meeting, Sule called the interaction "excellent," lauding Desalegn's five-decade-long engagement with Ethiopia's political and economic landscape. "They have seen a lot of conflict here. They have seen ups and downs in their economy and growth. But under his leadership, they had double-digit growth and many infrastructure projects--be it beautiful dams, railways, industrial parks," Sule noted, drawing parallels between India and Ethiopia's shared developmental aspirations. "We had a detailed discussion and told him what happened in Pahalgam. The attack on India's soul is just not accepted. And we all must commit ourselves to zero tolerance against any terrorism anywhere in the world. India will not accept any terrorist attacks anymore," Sule stressed, underlining the main theme of the delegation's engagements across the region. Sule also welcomed Ethiopia's inclusion in the G20 during India's presidency last year, calling it a significant milestone in India-Ethiopia ties. "It's very important for us to come here today to talk to them. We were very warmly received and reassured that in this journey of eradication of terrorism, Ethiopia still stands together solidly with India," she said. Commenting on Ethiopia's bilateral relations with Pakistan, Sule said that terrorism must be opposed globally, regardless of geopolitical alignments. "I think globally, everybody agrees that there has to be zero tolerance against terrorism. So I think we are very hopeful that when it comes to terrorism, we all stand united, whoever the other country may be, but we will not accept any terrorism anywhere in the world anymore." Meanwhile, echoing similar views, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, a member of the delegation, highlighted the need for decisive action against terror-sponsoring states. "We don't find the difference between terrorist organisations and the states sponsoring terrorism, we see the similarities in them. We will not be restraining ourselves, but for the security of the country, for the safety of the country, we will try to eliminate the threat of this terrorism wherever it is in whichever country that is sponsoring it," he said. The all-party delegation led by Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Supriya Sule, arrived at Bole International Airport in Ethiopia on Friday, where they were received and welcomed by the Ambassador of India to Ethiopia, Anil Kumar Rai. The delegation concluded its diplomatic visit to South Africa with a series of meetings involving political leaders, think tanks, and the Indian diaspora at India House in Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa. The delegation includes NCP-SP MP Supriya Sule, Rajiv Pratap Rudy (BJP), Vikramjit Singh Sahney (AAP), Manish Tewari (Congress), Anurag Singh Thakur (BJP), Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu (TDP), Anand Sharma (Congress), V Muraleedharan (BJP), and former diplomat Syed Akbaruddin. The visit, part of India's broader diplomatic outreach following the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam and the subsequent Operation Sindoor, aimed to deepen bilateral ties and convey India's firm stance against cross-border terrorism.
