Verstappen Wins at Imola as Red Bull Celebrate 400 Races
Max Verstappen took a dominant victory at Imola on Sunday to celebrate Red Bull's 400th grand prix and end Formula One leader Oscar Piastri's run of three wins in a row for McLaren.
Australian Piastri started on pole and finished third, overtaken by teammate Lando Norris on fresher tyres seven laps from the end, with his championship lead cut from 16 points to 13 after seven rounds.
The victory was the 65th of Verstappen's career, second of the season and the four-times world champion's fourth in a row at the Italian circuit near Bologna after wins in 2021, 2022 and 2024. There was no race in 2023 due to flooding.
'The start itself wasn't particularly great but I was still on the outside line, the normal line, so I was like 'well I'm going to try and send it around the outside' and it worked really well,' said the Dutch driver.
'Of course, that unleashed our pace because when we were in the lead, the car was good. I could look after my tyres.'
Piastri had started the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix as favourite for a fourth win in a row, and fifth in seven races, but lost out as Verstappen went around the outside into turn one on the opening lap and pulled away.
A virtual safety car halfway through the race also worked against him.
A late real safety car bunched up the field but Verstappen, now only nine points behind Norris, was never in any real danger from the McLarens and took the chequered flag 6.109 seconds clear of Norris.
'We had a good little battle at the end between Oscar and myself which was tense, but always good fun,' said the Briton.
'A good race. For us as a team, second and third is great. Of course you would love to be up there fighting against Max but they were too good for us today.'
Seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton finished a surprising fourth in his first race in Italy for Ferrari after starting 12th following a qualifying nightmare.
Alex Albon was fifth for Williams with Charles Leclerc sixth for Ferrari.
George Russell started third but ended up seventh while Carlos Sainz was eighth on another great afternoon for resurgent Williams.
Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar was ninth and Verstappen's teammate Yuki Tsunoda took the final point for Red Bull after starting in the pit lane following a big crash in Saturday's qualifying.Also read: Max Verstappen And McLaren Set For Explosive Saudi Arabian GP

Ancelotti's Brazil stumble in debut
Carlo Ancelotti's debut as coach of Brazil ended in a goalless draw in Ecuador in South American World Cup qualifying on Thursday. Argentina, already assured of a place in next year's tournament, beat Chile 1-0 in Santiago with a goal from Julian Alvarez, a result which guarantees Lionel Scaloni's team top spot and leaves bottom placed 'La Roja' with virtually no hope of qualifying. But the home side were dealt a blow just before kick-off when goalkeeper Hernan Galindez suffered a muscle strain in the warm-up and replacement Gonzalo Valle was hurriedly sent out to make his debut. If Valle had any nerves they eased when he did well to parry a shot from inside the box from Vinicius Jr. who had been set up by Gerson following a turnover. Chances were limited in a contest where neither side was able to get control of midfield. The pattern continued after the break with Ecuador, missing their injured striker and talisman Enner Valencia, struggling to pose a threat. Real Madrid star Vinicius was quiet for much of the game and with Rodrygo absent, Brazil also lacked potency in attack. The best opening came in the 75th minute when Vinicius broke down the left and cut back to Casemiro, but the Manchester United midfielder, recalled to the national side by Ancelotti, saw a tame side-footed effort easily dealt with by Valle. Patience While there was no instant impact from Ancelotti, Vinicius, who played under the coach in Madrid, said he needed time to make his impact felt. 'I'm very happy to have Ancelotti here with us, because I've always said he's the best coach I've ever worked with. Having the opportunity to work with him in the Brazilian national team is the best,' the winger told SporTV. 'He hasn't had time to show his work, his game plan, because he's only had two or three days of training,' he added. Atletico Madrid striker Alvarez put Argentina ahead at the Estadio Nacional in the 16th minute with a deft finish after he had been put through by a perfectly weighted pass from Thiago Almada. Lionel Messi came off the bench in the 57th minute but Chile sensed a chance to get something from the game and created more as the game progressed. Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez made a series of crucial saves and Lucas Cepeda went closest with a fierce shot which struck the bar. Cepeda then had the best chance of the game when he was found at the back post but he blasted his volley wide. Messi set up Giuliano Simeone with a chance to make it 2-0 but the son of former Argentina captain and Atletico Madrid coach Diego, fired his shot into the side netting. A header from midfielder Matías Galarza just 13 minutes into the game and a late penalty from Julio Enciso earned Paraguay a crucial victory over a depleted Uruguay.

Australia ready to ‘do a job' in Saudi and qualify for World Cup
AFP | Perth Australia coach Tony Popovic has warned his buoyant team they still 'need to do a job' after propelling themselves to the cusp of a sixth successive World Cup. A last-gasp 1-0 win over already qualified Japan at a soldout Perth Stadium on Thursday put the Socceroos in pole position to finish second in Asian Group C. That would automatically punch their ticket to North America next year. They face Saudi Arabia on Tuesday knowing they only need to avoid defeat by five goals or more in Jeddah. Despite the Saudis only scoring six times in their nine qualifying games so far, Popovic cautioned against complacency. 'We need to do a job in Saudi,' he told reporters. 'We're in a great position but we have to finish it off. 'It's been a really intense period since I've come in but everyone's embraced what we're aiming to do. 'We're very close now to achieving our goal.' Popovic replaced Graham Arnold in the dugout in September and has rejuvenated the side, with victory on Thursday their first over Japan since 2009. When he took over Australia were fifth in the group and fresh from a disastrous 1-0 loss to Bahrain and a 0-0 draw with Indonesia, with automatic qualification looking unlikely. Popovic admitted his emotions ran high when Aziz Behich hit the 90th-minute winner, and said beating Japan was testament to the work everyone had put in. 'It was a wonderful goal,' he said. 'Although football-wise we need to get better, and we will, in that 90th minute we had six players in the box trying to score a goal. 'The players were moving forward yet they were fatigued and it was a good reward for the group. 'We were tough, kept a clean sheet and have done something (beating Japan) that many Australian sides have tried to do,' he added. 'They (Japan) were on a wonderful run, there's a reason for that, they are the best (in Asia) and we want to challenge them to be the best.'

Postecoglou sacked by Spurs despite ending trophy drought
Ange Postecoglou was sacked as Tottenham manager yesterday, just 16 days after the Australian ended the club's 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League. Postecoglou led Tottenham to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao to clinch the north Londoners' first European prize in 41 years and secure a place in next season's Champions League. But the Australian paid the price for Tottenham's worst domestic season since they were relegated from the top flight in 1976-77. 'Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties,' a statement on Tottenham's official X account said. Exactly two years after he was hired from Celtic, Postecoglou's eventful spell in north London was brought to a end by chairman Daniel Levy. Tottenham lost 22 of their 38 Premier League games to finish 17th in the table, above only relegated trio Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton. 'The Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the club for a change to take place,' the statement said. 'Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.'
