Kangar man charged over 365kg drug haul, faces death or life in prison
KANGAR, June 13 — A 40-year-old man was charged in the Magistrate's Court here today with trafficking 365 kilogrammes of syabu (methamphetamine).
However, no plea was recorded from the accused, Mohd Mudzakkir Zainal Abidin, when the charge was read to him before Magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim.
According to the charge, Mohd Mudzakkir, a machinery driver, and another individual, who is still at large, are accused of trafficking the dangerous drug at a house in Kampung Belat Batu, Beseri, near Padang Besar, at around 8.45pm on May 31.
He was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same law and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
The offence carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
The court did not grant bail to the accused, as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
The mention date was set for September 22, pending the completion of the chemistry report.
Deputy public prosecutor Tengku Ruqayyah Tengku Shahrom appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is awaiting the full written judgment in the Yusoff Rawther case to identify any gaps or shortcomings in the investigation process. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the force is prepared to enhance its investigative procedures through internal evaluation and a review of existing standard operating procedures (SOPs). 'PDRM acknowledges, respects and welcomes the reactions and views expressed by various quarters concerning the High Court's decision in the Yusoff Rawther case. 'These views reflect a genuine interest in ensuring that the country's criminal justice system continues to uphold the principles of justice and human rights,' he said in a statement yesterday. He added that all police reports are investigated fairly and without prejudice, including cases involving high-profile suspects, and that decisions on prosecutions are made in accordance with Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution, under the discretion of the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC). Razarudin said the police report lodged by Yusoff Rawther on 12 September 2024 was investigated in parallel with two investigation papers relating to the discovery of cannabis and imitation firearms. He added that there was no necessity to record a statement from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as the required action had been taken at the initial stage of the complaint. 'At that juncture, PDRM had submitted both investigation papers to the AGC with recommendations for prosecution. Based on the available evidence at the time, it was deemed sufficient to charge Yusoff Rawther without the need to interview any other parties to complete the investigation. 'As with other cases previously decided by the courts, PDRM remains attentive to judgments that are not in its favour and is committed to taking proactive measures to improve the quality of investigations and strengthen prosecutorial outcomes,' he said. On June 12, Yusoff Rawther was acquitted and discharged by the High Court of charges of trafficking 305 grams of cannabis and possessing two imitation pistols on Sept 6 last year. Judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin ruled that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against the 32-year-old at the close of the prosecution's case. — Bernama

Gunmen on motorcycle open fire in Brickfields restaurant, killing one, injuring two
KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — A man died while two of his friends were injured after being shot at a restaurant in Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Brickfields here, last night. Brickfields district police chief ACP Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said in the incident at about 10.50 pm, the three local men aged between 30 and 50 were eating with several friends before being approached by two men on a motorcycle who fired several shots at them. 'One of the victims was confirmed dead at the scene due to gunshots and his body was sent to the University Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) for a post-mortem. 'Two other victims are receiving treatment at PPUM with one of them suffering serious injuries while the other sustained minor injuries,' he told reporters at the scene early this morning. Ku Mashariman said further investigations are underway including examining closed-circuit camera footage, identifying the motive for the incident and the suspects involved. 'There is nothing to alarm the public at this time and the police will investigate this case from various angles. 'Members of the public with information about the incident are advised to contact the police or the nearest police station to assist in the investigation,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code. — Bernama

MACC secures RM4.5mil forfeiture linked to 1MDB from Swiss bank account

(AP pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has secured the forfeiture of US$954,299.58 (RM4.5 million) from a Swiss bank account linked to the misappropriation of 1MDB funds. MACC said the Kuala Lumpur High Court allowed the forfeiture today after the deputy public prosecutor informed the court that there were no objections or claims made by any party during the proceedings. 'Justice K Muniandy granted the application to forfeit the funds held in a BSI Bank account in Switzerland under the name of Derivale Ltd, whose beneficiary is Azlin Alias,' it said in a statement. The forfeiture was carried out under Section 56 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. According to MACC, this marks the first successful forfeiture of overseas assets without involving prosecution. It said the funds will now be transferred to the government as part of ongoing recovery efforts related to the 1MDB scandal. Last month, MACC chief Azam Baki said repatriating assets linked to 1MDB remained a difficult process as many of these stolen assets were located overseas. He said the complex nature of the case made international cooperation crucial, especially when it came to tracing and retrieving funds that were siphoned into multiple countries. Azam also said Malaysia lost an estimated RM277 billion to corruption between 2018 and 2023 – an average of RM55 billion a year – describing the amount as 'very alarming'.
