‘Shared home': Sarawak premier urges Asean, China to keep South China Sea peaceful
Speaking at a gala dinner held in conjunction with the 24th Asean–China Senior Officials' Meeting on the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) here yesterday, Abang Johari said the meeting symbolised a collective commitment to safeguard the region.
'This region is our shared home and together we have the responsibility to ensure it remains a sea of peace and prosperity,' he said.
Also present was Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin.
Abang Johari also recalled the enduring spirit of the Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality (ZOPFAN), inspired by the 1955 Bandung Conference and leaders such as Indonesia's Soekarno, India's Jawaharlal Nehru and China's Zhou Enlai, saying it remains relevant to Asean's approach today.
He expressed pride in Sarawak's role as host, saying the state's more than 30 ethnic groups living in harmony exemplify Malaysia's strength in unity through diversity.
'Sarawak's natural beauty, rich biodiversity and cultural heritage reflect the harmony between its people and nature,' he added.
Earlier, Amran highlighted Sarawak's emergence as a key growth hub, citing its progress in economic cooperation, sustainable development and green technology.
'With focus on energy connectivity, environmental stewardship and industrial innovation, Sarawak is not keeping pace with regional developments but also helping shape Asean's sustainable future,' he said.
Amran also noted Sarawak's leadership in integrating the island of Borneo into the Asean Power Grid, underscoring its growing strategic importance within and beyond Asean. — Bernama

He said that although there were certain quarters that refused to acknowledge Malaysia's role, the trust placed by the countries involved was clear proof that they held Malaysia's political and economic stability in high regard. 'Thank God, in Malaysia our politics are stable and our economic development is respected. So, when disputes arise, the task of reconciliation is entrusted to us. This is a form of international recognition, even if some in Parliament may choose not to acknowledge it — and that is fine,' he said. Anwar made the remarks when opening the Madani Dairy Entrepreneur Carnival at Farm Fresh Perak Dairy Complex today. Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Minister of Education Fadhlina Sidek Earlier, US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. Kagan was reported to have said that Malaysia had played an important role as ASEAN Chair in peace efforts between Thailand and Cambodia through the General Boundary Committee (GBC) meeting, following tensions along the border of the two countries. Kagan said that Malaysia's role in organising the meeting demonstrated its leadership in bringing both nations to the table. Meanwhile, Anwar said Malaysia's strong diplomatic relations with foreign countries have brought significant benefits, particularly in creating new economic opportunities in the country. 'For example, during the conflict between Cambodia and Thailand, Thai milk could not enter Cambodia, but Farm Fresh milk successfully entered the market. 'I am sharing this because our relations with Thailand and Cambodia are good. If Farm Fresh wishes to open a farm in Thailand, we will extend our full cooperation,' he said. Anwar also stressed that the government will continue to support initiatives that strengthen the nation's food security, including the dairy industry. Expressing pride in the achievements of local dairy producer Farm Fresh Bhd, he praised the company for its contribution to the dairy sector, job creation for Malaysians, and commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). Meanwhile, Farm Fresh chief operations director Azmi Zainal said the company's 828-acre complex in Perak is home to 4,300 dairy cows producing 22,000 litres of milk daily. 'In a year, this complex produces 10 million litres of milk, making it the largest and most productive dairy farm in the country,' he said, adding that the farm has 150 local workers, most of whom are under 30 years old. Farm Fresh also buys milk from local small farmers at competitive prices. MPs to allocate funds for Civil Defence uniforms from next year, says DPM Zahid
SHAH ALAM, Aug 16 — Starting next year, Members of Parliament will be asked to set aside part of their allocations for the purchase of uniforms for the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in their respective constituencies. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the move is aimed at strengthening the uniformed force and encouraging more participation. 'All ministry staff are also encouraged to join APM,' he told reporters after officiating the 16th National Civil Defence Student Corps (Kor SISPA) Graduation Parade and Commissioning Ceremony 2025 at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) here today. The ceremony was graced by Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin. Also present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir and APM Chief Commissioner Datuk Aminurrahim Mohamed. At the event, 24 officers representing various institutions of higher learning received the Best SISPA Cadet Officer Award, while a special award, the Chief Commissioner's Premier Trophy (Best Among the Best), was also presented. A total of 918 students were commissioned as Second Lieutenants (Civil Defence). Ahmad Zahid stressed that civil defence serves as the nation's second line of defence after the military and police. Timor-Leste nears permanent ASEAN membership ahead of October summit
SEREMBAN: Timor-Leste's permanent membership in ASEAN is now in the documentation phase before its formal admission at the October summit. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed the progress during a press briefing today. 'At the upcoming ASEAN Summit in October, there will be a ceremony to welcome Timor-Leste as a permanent member of ASEAN. Right now, it is only at the documentation stage,' he said. He added that Timor-Leste has met most of ASEAN's membership requirements. 'We decided that they should first be admitted as a permanent member, after which ASEAN will assist them in completing the remaining documentation process,' he explained. Mohamad spoke after officiating UMNO Rembau's women, youth, and puteri division meetings. ASEAN reaffirmed its commitment to Timor-Leste's inclusion as the 11th member at the 47th ASEAN Summit in October. The decision aligns with the outcome of the 46th ASEAN Summit. A Joint Communique from the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting on July 9 highlighted support for Timor-Leste's early accession to key economic agreements. 'We look forward to Timor-Leste fulfilling its roles and obligations as an incoming member state and its commitment to upholding ASEAN's fundamental principles,' the statement read. Timor-Leste, Southeast Asia's youngest nation, applied for ASEAN membership in 2011. The country gained independence on May 20, 2002, after years of struggle. Despite delays, Dili has shown strong commitment to meeting ASEAN's membership criteria. In February, Malaysia contributed US$200,000 to the ASEAN Secretariat's Timor-Leste Unit in Jakarta. The funds aim to accelerate the membership process. Malaysia has also provided technical training through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP). To date, 319 Timor-Leste officials have received training in various fields under the programme. - Bernama
