One year removed from Texas A&M baseball's historic College World Series run, powered in large part by closer Evan Aschenbeck.
Aggies fans found themselves holding their breath after the 2024 MLB Draft. Aschenbeck sought an eligibility exemption based on his JUCO playing time at Blinn College, hoping for one more season in Aggieland. But with no response from the NCAA, the 2024 NCBWA Stopper of the Year signed a pro contract with the Chicago Cubs as the 392nd overall pick.
Now pitching for the High-A South Bend Cubs, Aschenbeck has posted a 3-3 minor league record, but the left-hander is heating up. Over his last five outings, he's worked 32.1 innings with 25 strikeouts and a sharp 2.44 ERA. His latest performance against the Fort Wayne TinCaps was vintage Aschenbeck.
He tossed seven scoreless innings and five strikeouts, showing he's finding his rhythm at the next level. Below you can see his strikeout to end the seventh inning.

Four Alabama players named to AP 2025 preseason All-America Team
Announced on Monday, Alabama had four players named on the 2025 AP Preseason All-America Team. Offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor and wide receiver Ryan Williams were both named to the first team, while center Parker Brailsford and defensive tackle Tim Keenan III were named to the second team. Ryan Williams is a sophomore who took college football by storm last year. He had 48 receptions, 865 yards, and eight touchdowns. Williams is a deep threat on the outside for Ty Simpson and the Alabama offense. Kadyn Proctor is a massive 6'7 366 lb. left tackle. He will be protecting Ty Simpson's blind side and is a top 10 draft pick according to ESPN's 2026 NFL Mock Draft. Parker Brailsford is considered one of the nation's top centers and was recently named to the Rimington Trophy watch list given to the nation's top center. Brailsford started all 13 games for the Tide last season and had 63 knockdown blocks and gave up just 0.5 sacks. Keenan will anchor the Tide's interior defensive line this season. Keenan recorded 40 tackles, 7.5 TFL, and 2.5 sacks last season. He has been named to the Nagurski and Bednarik award watch lists, both given to the nation's top defensive player. Jackson Herrington earns spot for Masters, U.S. Open in 2026
Tennessee sophomore Jackson Herrington advanced to the finals of the 2025 U.S. Amateur Championship at Olympic Golf Course in San Francisco, California. He played a 36-hole championship match versus high school junior Mason Howell, a 2016 Georgia commit. Howell, 18, won the 36-hole final, 7 and 6, surpassing Tiger Woods to become the third-youngest U.S. Amateur champion all time. Byeong Hun An, 17, in 2009 and Danny Lee, 18, in 2008 were younger won they were victorious. With Herrington's performance, the Tennessee sophomore earned a spot in the 2026 Masters and the 2026 U.S. Open. "I got through a lot of people this week, and it was tough," Herrington said. "I proved to myself I could do it." Tennessee will tee off its 2025-26 golf season Sept. 5-7 in the Visit Knoxville Collegiate at Tennessee National Golf Course in Loudon, Tennessee. Former Spartan signs with Pittsburgh Steelers following stellar UFL season
A former Spartans defensive star is getting another crack in the NFL. Former Michigan State defensive end Kenny Willekes has reportedly signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. James Larsen of UFL Newsroom reported the notable news on Tuesday morning. Willekes starred for the Michigan Panthers this past season as one of the UFL's top edge rushers over the past two seasons. With the Panthers this past season, he recorded 31 tackles, four sacks and 28 quarterback pressures. Willekes last played in the NFL in 2021 with the Minnesota Vikings. He has appeared in six career games in the NFL, with 2.5 sacks and 18 tackles. Willekes was a star edge rusher for the Spartans from 2016 to 2019, where he appeared in 40 career games as a Spartan. He ended his Michigan State career with 229 tackles, including 26 sacks and 52 tackles for loss.
