Bihan Didis receive 1.5 lakh tricolour order under Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan, boosting livelihoods in Chhattisgarh

In a vibrant blend of patriotism and empowerment, the women of Chhattisgarh's Bihan Yojana have taken on the task of stitching more than 1.5 lakh tricolour flags under the Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan, as part of the nationwide Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. This initiative is not only helping ignite the spirit of nationalism but is also significantly strengthening the financial conditions of these rural women.
At the Nari Shakti Garment Factory in Ganiyari, located in Bilaspur district, more than 100 women from 30 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) associated with Bihan Yojana are actively engaged in crafting the national flag. These women, known locally as "Bihan Didis," are pouring their skills and dedication into every piece, seeing it not merely as an assignment but as a sacred duty to the nation.
"We are proud to be a part of this holy work. It connects us directly to the service of the country," said one of the women.
"The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign has given us more than income - it has given us pride," said another group member.
This large-scale production is part of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, which encourages citizens to hoist the tricolour at homes, offices, and shops from August 13 to 15, to commemorate India's independence. The demand for the flags has surged across the country, and the Bihan Didis are rising to the occasion.
Santoshi Sahe, PRP of the Nari Shakti Garment Factory Cluster, shared that multiple government and private institutions have placed bulk orders for the tricolour.
"The Didis are working tirelessly to meet the growing demand. From cutting fabric to stitching, pressing, and packing, every step is being done by the women themselves. Not only are they earning daily wages, but their confidence and self-reliance are also growing with every flag they complete," Sahe said.
The work has become a symbol of both patriotism and progress, offering women a sense of purpose beyond economic gain. The income generated through the campaign has helped many households and has given rural women a sense of pride in contributing to the national cause.
District Panchayat CEO Sandeep Agarwal said that, like the previous year, the responsibility of flag production has been entrusted to these women once again.
"The tricolours are being sold at affordable prices through stalls set up by the groups at the district panchayat premises. I appeal to all residents to hoist the tricolour at their homes and participate in this movement of national pride," Agarwal said.
He emphasised that the campaign is not just about celebrating Independence Day, but also about empowering women and recognising their contribution to society.

Bond yields jump 10 bps on GST cut proposal, wipe out rating upgrade gains

Government bond yields surged on Monday as proposed cuts in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) revived fiscal concerns and raised fears of increased debt supply. The yield on the benchmark 10-year government bond rose by 10 basis points — its sharpest single-day rise since 6 October 2023 — to settle at 6.50 per cent, against the previous close of 6.40 per cent. The benchmark yield has risen 21 bps since the 50 bps reduction in the policy repo rate by the Reserve Bank of India's rate-setting panel on 6 June. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced GST rate rationalisation during his Independence Day address on Friday. The government plans to scrap the 12 per cent and 28 per cent slabs and move to a two-tier GST structure of 5 per cent and 18 per cent, with a higher 40 per cent slab reserved for select sin goods. Government bonds wiped out all gains accrued on Thursday after S&P's upgrade of India's sovereign credit rating from 'BBB-' to 'BBB'. Bond markets were shut on Friday for Independence Day. 'There is fear of an increase in supply of bonds, and uncertainty in the market,' said a dealer at a state-owned bank. 'There is technical support at 6.50 per cent (yield on the benchmark 10-year bond),' he added. The new tax proposal will be placed before the GST Council for approval in its September or October meeting. 'The revenue loss to the Centre and states is estimated at ₹1.8 trillion (0.5 per cent of GDP) for 12 months. The Centre's net loss (after transfers to states) is estimated at 0.15 per cent of GDP, while the states' loss is estimated at 0.36 per cent of GDP. The relatively lower burden on the Centre is because states receive not only SGST but also 41 per cent of CGST,' IDFC First Bank said in a report. S&P's rating upgrade was based on recognition of the government's resolve to maintain fiscal discipline alongside a strong infrastructure drive. Meanwhile, the rupee appreciated by 21 paise to settle at 87.35 per dollar, compared with the previous close of 87.56, tracking equities which rose 0.84 per cent on the GST cut proposal. 'Rupee gained supported by expectations of a GST reduction likely to be announced around Diwali, with GST Council and PMO meetings lined up to provide a fiscal boost,' said Jateen Trivedi, Vice-President and Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities. 'The move comes as policymakers look to cushion the economy amid lingering pressure on exports from US tariff issues. Rupee range can be seen between 87.00 and 87.75,' Trivedi added. The local currency has depreciated by 2.15 per cent in the current financial year, and by 1.99 per cent in the current calendar year. In August so far, the rupee has appreciated by 0.24 per cent.

Dalal Street finds a fresh tailwind as GST hopes and global calm lift benchmarks higher

Domestic equity benchmarks surged on Monday, marking their third consecutive day of gains, as optimism over potential GST reforms and easing concerns on Russian oil supplies lifted investor sentiment. The Nifty closed above the 24,850 mark, supported by strong buying in autos, banks and consumer durables. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address, announced that the government is planning to roll out "generational" GST reforms before Diwali, a move seen as a major sentiment booster for the market. Adding to the cheer, the recent U.S.-Russia meeting concluded without fresh tensions, helping calm fears over disruptions in global oil supplies. Sectorally, automobiles led the rally as investors bet on the segment benefiting from tax rationalisation. Analysts noted that consumption-led sectors could also gather momentum in the second half of FY26 on the back of demand revival. The upbeat mood was further bolstered by India's recent credit rating upgrade, which reinforced confidence in the countrys economic prospects. The S&P BSE Sensex jumped 676.09 points or 0.84% to 81,273.75. The Nifty 50 index surged 245.65 points or 1% to 24,876.95. The 50-unit index is up 1.59% in three days. Maruti Suzuki India (up 8.9%), Bajaj Finance (up 5%) and Mahindra & Mahindra (up 3.4%) boosted the Nifty higher today. In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index rose 1% and the S&P BSE Small-Cap index added 1.39%. The market breadth was strong. On the BSE, 2,562 shares rose and 1,627 shares fell. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 87.3600 compared with its close of 87.5900 during the previous trading session. MCX Gold futures for 3 October 2025 settlement was flat Rs 99,840. The US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, was up 0.15% to 98.00. The United States 10-year bond yield fell 0.76% to 4.294. In the commodities market, Brent crude for October 2025 settlement added 30 cents or 0.46% to $66.15 a barrel. Global Market: European stocks traded lower on Monday as traders awaited a meeting between regional leaders and U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss Ukraine. Asian indices ended mixed on Monday after the U.S.-Russia summit concluded without a ceasefire. As per media reports, U.S. President Donald Trump now seemed more aligned with Moscow on seeking a peace deal with Ukraine instead of a ceasefire first, after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. The reports further state that Trump will meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European leaders later on Monday to discuss the next steps, though actual proposals are vague as yet. US stocks were mixed on Friday as Wall Street tempered its rate-cut hopes amid economic data this week that showed higher-than-expected wholesale inflation and a rise in July retail sales. The Dow rose 0.08%, or 34.86 points, to 44,946.12. The S&P 500 slipped 0.29%, or 18.74 points, to 6,449.80; and the tech-heavy Nasdaq dipped 0.4%, or 87.693 points, to 21,622.977. The US Census Bureau data released Friday morning showed retail sales rose 0.5% in July from the prior month. Meanwhile, US consumer sentiment deteriorated in August, falling for the first time in four months as inflation expectations jumped in the longer term. The US Fed will continue to be in focus this week as central bank members travel to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for the annual economic policy symposium. Buzzing Index: The Nifty Auto index rallied 4.18% to 25,127.20 today, fueled by growing speculation that the government may slash GST rates on automobiles. GST rate cut hopes drive nearly ₹1 lakh crore rally in Nifty auto stocks

Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor, TVS Motor Company, and other auto stocks saw a massive rally in Monday's session after the government announced plans for sweeping changes to the goods and services tax (GST) regime. Analysts believe the reforms could revive demand in the auto sector, which has remained muted in recent quarters. Fourteen out of the 15 constituents of the Nifty Auto index closed with sharp gains, led by Maruti Suzuki, which surged 8.8% to ₹ 14,068 apiece, its biggest intraday jump in the last five years. Other major gainers included Ashok Leyland, TVS Motor Company, Hero MotoCorp, MRF, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Eicher Motors, all rising between 2.6% and 8%. The rally boosted the combined market capitalization of the 14 auto stocks by nearly ₹ 1 lakh crore, taking the sector's total m-cap to ₹ 22.56 lakh crore. In his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced significant GST reforms, the most comprehensive since the rollout in 2017, announcing the ushering in of a two-tier GST structure—a reform billed as the 'next generation of GST,' expected to take shape by Diwali, as per sources. The current GST tax structure has four main categories of rates, at 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. The proposed changes will see the number of categories reduced to two, with most goods that were taxed at 12% and 28% now taxed at the lower rate of 5% and 18%, respectively. Even though changes to the GST had been discussed for years, the timing of the announcement in Modi's Independence Day speech was a surprise to many. The move comes against the backdrop of President Donald Trump's threat to double tariffs on Indian exports to the US to 50% by August 27 to penalize the country for buying oil from Russia. Automobiles, currently under the 28% slab, would move to 18% if the proposal is approved, which analysts believe could lead to price cuts and potentially revive sales. Auto manufacturers have been struggling in recent quarters amid weak urban demand, with many shifting focus to exports to sustain growth. Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj Auto both reported muted sales growth in the June quarter, while Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor also posted flat passenger vehicle sales. If implemented, the GST cut would offer much-needed relief for the Indian automobile sector. 'Autos fall under the 28% GST bracket. If autos move to 18% and we see sharp price drops, this could drive the next auto upcycle, similar to 2008,' said Morgan Stanley. 'Currently, GST on passenger vehicles ranges from 29% to 50%, as a cess is imposed on top of GST based on the vehicle's size and engine capacity. In the new regime, the government may reduce the tax on smaller cars to 18% (from 28%) and move bigger cars to a 'special rate' of 40% while scrapping the cess. This could lower prices of smaller cars by around 8% and larger cars by 3–5%,' HSBC noted. GST reduction would negatively impact government revenues in the near term but drive-up Auto demand and hence job creation in India. PVs generate USD14-15 billion in GST collection, and 2Ws USD 5 billion, said the brokerage. Domestic brokerage Motilal Oswal added that passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles, currently taxed at 28%, will benefit most from the cut. Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Ashok Leyland are well positioned to gain from lower effective prices and higher volumes. Disclaimer: This story is for educational purposes only.
