Ginger farming offers high potential for lucrative returns
Born and bred in Sungai Besar, Selangor, Khairul began with crops like bitter gourd, okra, water spinach, spinach, eggplant, and chilli. Then, in October, he ventured into ginger cultivation – a move that proved worthwhile when his first harvest of young ginger last month delivered impressive returns.
Working on his farm in Kampung Sungai Panjang, Sungai Besar, Khairul said he prepared for this venture by attending a three-day course organised by the crop industry development division at the Serdang Agricultural Complex last year.
'I also gathered knowledge from Google and YouTube, and visited friends who are experienced in ginger cultivation to gain hands-on insights,' he told Bernama.
'As I had no prior experience in planting ginger, I also sought guidance from the Sabak Bernam district agriculture office. They provided significant support, especially with funding – I simply put my plan into action.'
Khairul allocated 2.4ha of land for the project butused only 0.4ha in the initial phase to plant 10,000 Thai ginger saplings. Thai ginger, he noted, is in high demand locally.
He shared that ginger can be harvested in a relatively short time – young ginger takes three to four months, while mature ginger takes seven to eight months. Khairul's first harvest of young ginger delivered impressive returns, inspiring him to potentially expand his cultivation area. (Bernama pic)
Following the successful results of his first harvest, which he sold to wholesalers and wholesale markets, he plans to expand his cultivation area in the near future.
'There is strong demand for young ginger, with prices ranging from RM7-10 per kg. Seeing the ginger harvest for the first time from my own efforts, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction and pride,' said Khairul, who is helped by two workers.
'I wouldn't rule out expanding my plots one day, if I'm blessed with more capital. With consistency, one can attract orders locally and internationally, as ginger is not only a food source but also an ingredient in health products,' he added.
Indeed, the potential of ginger farming was recently highlighted by deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who urged rural communities to take advantage of the opportunity to cultivate the crop, which offers significant financial returns.
Ahmad Zahid pointed out that ginger is in high demand in markets such as China, Europe, and the United States, especially for use in cosmetics and pharmaceutical products.

MyKad-linked SARA aid eases financial burden for single mothers in Malaysia
KUALA NERUS: The Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid distributed via MyKad is proving to be a lifeline for single mothers, offering not just financial relief but also exclusive discounts at supermarkets. Noraini Sidek@Ali, a 49-year-old single mother of four, shared how the RM100 monthly assistance she receives helps her manage household expenses. 'Supermarkets here give special prices to SARA recipients when we pay with MyKad. It really helps B40 families like mine,' she said. Working as a domestic helper with a monthly income of RM600, Noraini relies on state aid and SARA to support her youngest son, who is still in school. 'This assistance lets me save a little each month,' she added. Her younger sister, Nor Laily Azura, also a SARA recipient, appreciates the convenience and security of using MyKad for purchases. 'I don't need to carry cash or a bank card. It's safer, especially when I'm out with my kids,' said Nor Laily, who lost her husband in a road accident in 2019. Despite earning RM400 a month as a homestay helper and receiving her late husband's pension, supporting her two daughters remains a challenge. The RM200 monthly SARA aid since March has eased some of her financial stress. The SARA initiative, now expanded to 5.4 million recipients, is part of the MADANI Economy framework aimed at uplifting low-income households. Budget 2025 increased allocations for SARA and Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) to RM13 billion, with annual SARA aid raised to RM2,100 per recipient. In celebration of National Day, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a one-off RM100 payment for Malaysians aged 18 and above, credited directly to their MyKad-linked SARA accounts. This additional RM2 billion allocation brings total cash assistance funding to RM15 billion, the highest in Malaysia's history. Recipients can use the funds at over 4,500 participating outlets nationwide from Aug 31 to Dec 31. – Bernama

Tengku Zafrul: Boeing jet deal a strategic move, not a waste of public funds
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — Malaysia Aviation Group's (MAG) purchase of Boeing aircraft is not a waste of taxpayers' money as alleged by certain quarters but rather a strategic business decision that was planned in advance and will be fully financed using the company's funds, said Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister explained that the purchase decision had been announced as early as March this year, prior to United States (US) President Donald Trump's announcement of any new import tariff on goods. 'So what does this purchase have to do with tariff negotiations? 'The US imposed the tariffs partly due to the trade deficit. This means we sold more goods to the US than we bought from the country, so the US sought to reduce this deficit by imposing high tariffs of 25 per cent,' he said in a post on his official X social media account yesterday. Hence, Tengku Zafrul said, Malaysia took the opportunity by listing all big-ticket purchases planned by Malaysian companies from the US, including the Boeing aircraft order. 'We are not making the purchase just to reduce tariffs,' he stressed. According to him, this demonstrated to the US that Malaysia is also a major buyer of its products, thus finally convincing the US to lower import tariffs on Malaysian goods from 25 per cent to 19 per cent. 'This smart strategy is the result of careful negotiations, ensuring that the interests of both companies and the country are protected,' he added. In March this year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that MAG had placed a firm order for 30 Boeing 737 aircraft, scheduled for delivery by 2030. — Bernama

Kedah water agency raising tariffs, says to sustain water supply in state
ALOR SETAR, Aug 3 — Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada) is implementing a tariff adjustment through a review of the Tariff Setting Mechanism for all categories of users in Kedah, taking into account the company's operational expenditure (opex) and capital expenditure (capex). In a statement, Sada said the tariff adjustment came into effect on Friday and will be reflected in the September billing cycle. 'The tariff adjustment is a crucial requirement for the water operator to ensure long-term sustainability of the water supply in the state. It is also in line with Sada's ongoing efforts to improve service quality through the development of water infrastructure projects currently being actively implemented by the state government and Sada itself. 'Key focus areas include the replacement of old and deteriorated pipes, which are the main contributors to the non-revenue water (NRW) issue. To address water supply shortages, several new water treatment plant (WTP) projects are being developed, including the Pelubang WTP, Kodiang WTP Phase 1, Padang Saga WTP Phases 4 and 5, Sidam Kiri WTP Phase 1, Sungai Karangan WTP Phase 1, and the construction of a compact plant at Kulim Hi-Tech,' it said. Sada added that repair works for distribution systems and pump houses were also being actively carried out to address low water pressure issues in several areas. It said additional revenue from the tariff adjustment would be used to cover operating costs, repair and maintenance of existing systems, development of new, more sustainable and efficient water supply systems, improvements in service quality, including the company's capacity to respond to consumer complaints more swiftly, and to reduce the NRW rate in Kedah. 'The adjustment also considers the need to meet the company's operating costs for 2025, which are expected to increase by six per cent, covering key components such as electricity, wages, raw water charges, and chemicals used in the water treatment process,' it said. Sada stated that these rising costs exerted direct pressure on the company's operational capacity to deliver efficient, stable and quality water supply services to the people of Kedah. 'This tariff adjustment is seen as a strategic step to ensure the company's financial stability and to strengthen Sada's ability to continuously plan and implement service improvements,' it added. Overall, the impact of the tariff adjustment was described as reasonable and not burdensome. Sada said the adjustment had gone through a thorough review with the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) and was being implemented in phases to avoid burdening users. According to the statement, the approach taken strikes a balance between user affordability and the need for the water operator to meet its operating expenses. 'Sada expresses its deep appreciation and gratitude for the support provided by all parties, especially the Federal Government, the State Government, SPAN, and consumers,' it added. — Bernama
