BJP govt's rationalisation anti-education & anti-employment, will protest soon: Cong
Raipur: The Congress on Monday alleged that the BJP govt plans to shut down 10,000 schools and eliminate approximately 45,000 teaching posts through the rationalisation process.
The Chhattisgarh govt and the school education department has repeatedly claimed that schools will not close under the ongoing rationalisation, but teachers' bodies in the state asserted that the govt is not acknowledging their issues, staging demonstrations on the district level.
Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress committee (CPCC) president Deepak Baij alleged that the rationalisation will lead to a shortage of schools in remote areas, particularly in Bastar, Surguja, and Jashpur.
Baij refuted the govt's claims, calling them a 'lie'.
He reminded reporters that during the Assembly elections, the state govt claimed 58,000 teaching positions were vacant. While the Assembly announced 35,000 posts would be filled and the current year's budget mentioned recruitment for 20,000 teachers, Baij asserted that 45,000 posts are being eliminated to avoid these recruitments.
"When there are no vacant positions, how will they recruit?" Baij questioned, terming the rationalisation process as 'anti-education' and 'anti-employment'.
He warned that closing 10,000 schools will also result in the loss of jobs for thousands of cooks, watchmen, and service staff. The Congress will launch a grassroots movement against this decision, with details on protests in all districts and blocks to be announced shortly.
Baij Raises Concerns Of Fertiliser, Seed Shortage
Baij also raised concerns about a severe shortage of fertilisers and seeds in cooperative societies across the state due to negligence of the govt.
He pointed out that while 3 lakh metric tonnes of DAP are required this year, only 81,000 metric tonnes are currently available.
The monsoon has arrived, and Baij stressed that fertilisers should have already reached the societies, leaving farmers worried. He alleged that the govt does not want farmers to achieve a full harvest and is intentionally withholding supplies to reduce paddy procurement.
'Paddy MSP Hike By Govt Inadequate'
Meanwhile, CPCC communication department head Sushil Anand Shukla criticised the Union govt's recent increase of Rs 69 in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for paddy, calling it 'inadequate.'
Shukla highlighted that last year, paddy MSP increased by 5.36%, rising by Rs 117 from Rs 2,183 to Rs 2,300 per quintal. This year's mere 3% increase is too low, considering the inflation rate is around 8%, Shukla further stressed on the matterss.

The multi-party parliamentary delegation led by Congress leader Shashit Tharoor wrapped up its visit to the US after meeting with Vice President J D Vance and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau among political and diplomatic leaders, to drive home India's strong resolve to combat terrorism emanating from Pakistan. The delegation was on the last leg of a multi-nation tour to brief key interlocutors about Operation Sindoor that India launched in retaliation to the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, mostly tourists. The delegation was one of the seven multi-party delegations India had tasked to visit 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community to emphasise Pakistan's links to terrorism. The Indian team met Vice President Vance, Landau, House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) leadership, India Caucus leadership and Senate Foreign Relations Committee leaders. It also held meetings and interactions with a host of US Congressmen, think tanks, policy experts, media as well as members of the Indian-American community. Tharoor described the meeting with Vance at the White House for about 25 minutes on Thursday as 'an excellent meeting,' and said the vice president was 'warm and welcoming and receptive.' Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack, with India carrying out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7. "But my son will not return": Bengaluru stampede victim's family receives ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakh
Tumkur (Karnataka) [India], June 9 (ANI): Devraj, father of deceased Manoj Kumar, who died in the Bengaluru stampede incident among 10 others, received ex-gratia worth Rs 25 lakh by the Karnataka government and said that he would use the relief funds for the benefit of his daughter, who still depends on him. He expressed deep sorrow over the demise of his child and said that the financial assistance given to his family wouldn't bring his son back to life. 'I have been given a cheque of Rs 25 lakhs, but my son will not return. I will not use this money for my benefit... I will put it in the account of my daughter and her mother and keep the money for her future,' Devraj told ANI. Earlier, Tumkur Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Subha Kalyan said that the father of the deceased Manoj Kumar was given ex-gratia worth Rs 25 lakh from the Chief Minister's relief fund. '11 people lost their lives, one of them was Manoj Kumar from Tumkur district. Today, we received an order from the CM's office to immediately disburse a relief amount of Rs 25 lakh to his father, Devraj. We have handed him the cheque from the CM relief fund,' Kalyan told ANI. The DM stated that the deceased was a top student with over 85 per cent marks in Karnataka SSLC and was slated to go abroad to secure a job. 'He (the father) shared that he had a lot of dreams for his son, who was a topper and had scored more than 85 per cent in SSLC. He (the son) was slated to go to a foreign country for job opportunities. It is unfortunate that dreams, which a father carries, will not see the light of day,' she added. Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had ordered an increase in the compensation announced for the families of those who died in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede in Bengaluru to Rs 25 lakh each. Earlier, the government had announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara has said that the details regarding the Bengaluru stampede incident will emerge after the probe concludes. The stampede that occurred during celebrations outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Indian Premier League (IPL) victory celebrations claimed 11 lives. 'Everything will be known after investigation, including who said what, what statements were given earlier, when, and by whom,' Parameshwara told reporters here. Meanwhile, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday said that a commission has been formed that is currently conducting an inquiry into the Bengaluru stampede incident, where 11 people had lost their lives on June 4 during RCB's IPL victory celebrations. He refrained from commenting on the matter, noting that the state's Home Minister would provide a detailed response.'The commission is conducting an inquiry. I will not say much. The Home Minister will reply,' Shivakumar said. Moreover, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said the government is seriously considering moving the city's cricket stadium to a new location to prevent such incidents in the future. Speaking to the media, Siddaramaiah expressed deep personal pain over the tragedy, confirmed that the government is contemplating long-term solutions, and said that the government can shift the stadium to a different place. 'The government will look into shifting the cricket stadium to another location,' he said.'Such an unpleasant incident should not happen under any government. Personally, this incident has hurt me and the government,' he added. 'Five police officers have been suspended in this case. The intelligence chief and the chief minister's political secretary have been replaced,' Siddaramaiah confirmed. (ANI)

Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad stages protest against land transfer to Adani
Mumbai Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad led a protest on Sunday (June 8, 2025) against handing over the Mother Dairy land parcel in Mumbai's Kurla to the Adani group for Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL). She demanded to use the land for a botanical garden instead of a rehabilitation project, saying, 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi surrenders when American president Donald Trump calls, why CM Devender Fadnavis surrenders when Modi calls for Adani.' Former Minister Ms. Gaikwad alleged the BJP government is constantly ignoring the opposition of the locals and letting Adani swallow the whole of Mumbai during the protest. 'The Kurla Mother Dairyland is environmentally sensitive. Kurla Mother Dairy houses hundred-year-old trees, locals are demanding a botanical garden to protect them, yet it is transferred to Adani for infrastructure purposes at a nominal rate,' she added. Days ago, the Maharashtra Cabinet's decision to transfer an 8.05-hectare Mother Dairy land parcel to the DRPPL triggered opposition from locals and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders. Kurla Dairy is among the three dairies of Mumbai, where milk production stopped over the years, and the land was made available for other projects. Many Congress leaders and party functionaries, including MLA Jyoti Gaikwad, Congress spokesperson Suresh Chandra Rajhans, and Mumbai General Secretary Mahendra Mungekar, along with their supporters and activists, staged the peaceful protest in Kurla. Ms. Gaikwad said, 'While we were peacefully protesting, once again the Modani (Modi and Adani) government had sent a large police force to suppress the voice of the people. What justice is it that the police stopped the peaceful protest with the force of police force? The government is providing security to thieves, but we will not be swayed by this oppression. We will continue to fight against this Adani government for the rights of Mumbai.' She called the transfer of land a part of a 'conspiracy' wherein the plan is to destroy the lives of lakhs of Dharavikars and acquire 600 acres of land in Dharavi, along with Kurla Mother Dairy, saltpans, and Deonar dumping ground land. She alleged government will also seize land parcels in Air India Colony, Bandra Reclamation, Behrampada, and Motilal Nagar without taking the locals into confidence.
