College Football Program a Threat to Land No. 1 Spot in Recruiting Rankings

Yahoo20-05-2025

The Ohio State Buckeyes won the 2024 national championship. They could capture another huge victory on the recruiting trail.
According to ESPN, only the USC Trojans have a better 2026 recruiting class than the Buckeyes. If Ohio State manages to receive commitments from another few top recruits, with the star receivers the program has already landed, then the Buckeyes could finish with the top-ranked class for next year.

"Ryan Day has the luxury of building his 2026 class around one of the most coveted players in the country: five-star receiver (Chris) Henry (Jr.), whose father, the late Chris Henry, was a star receiver for West Virginia and the Cincinnati Bengals," ESPN's Craig Haubert wrote. "Henry Jr. stands 6-6 and has a combination of length and quickness rarely seen from high school receivers."

Five-star Chris Henry Jr. is the top recruit the Buckeyes have landed for 2026. But he's hardly the only highly touted prospect committed to Ohio State in next year's class.
"The rest of the Buckeyes' class has started to take shape around Henry," Haubert wrote. "The team has added a handful of ESPN 300 prospects since March, including (safety Blaine) Bradford out of Louisiana and linebacker Simeon Caldwell out of Florida.

"C.J. Sanna is a prospect we like on tape; he is a big, physical linebacker with excellent range and is a bit of an underrated pickup for this talented class. In-state offensive tackle Maxwell Riley is impressive changing direction and finishes plays with the type of nastiness that will endear him to fans in Columbus."
Based on the 247 Sports composite rankings, Ohio State currently holds the No. 3 recruiting class for 2026. USC and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are ahead of the Buckeyes.
However, USC has 27 commits while Notre Dame has 16. The Buckeyes have received 13 verbal commitments, giving them arguably a much-higher quality class.

Former Ohio State tight end Jeremy Ruckert responds to being reunited with Justin Fields

Former Ohio State tight end Jeremy Ruckert responds to being reunited with Justin Fields Former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields seems to have found himself a new opportunity to seize a major role in the NFL with the New York Jets after signing a two-year deal with the club. A byproduct of that is that he gets a chance to reconnect with a couple of other former Buckeyes that he played with in Columbus. We've already heard from receiver Garrett Wilson on his excitement to play with the former Heisman Finalist and first-round NFL draft pick, but the electric receiver isn't the only former OSU player donning a Jets uniform. Former tight end Jeremy Ruckert, who played for Ohio State from 2018 to 2021, got to block for and catch passes from Fields on the banks of the Olentangy for two years. So yeah, he too has some history with the guy the Jets' brass hopes turns around the fortunes of the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets. Ruckert was asked by the New York media what it means to be playing with his college teammate again, and was excited more for the team than himself. "Any time you get a chance to reconnect with one of your teammates, whether it's in the League or college, it's great,: Ruckert told reporters. "I'm excited where we're going as a team and the culture we're setting, and I think he's (Fields) perfect for that role, and just these last couple of weeks to get back on the same page and get our timing right with all the guys. It's been special to be a part of that, but also kind of get the other guys rolling and continue to grow as a unit." If you are an Ohio State fan, there aren't too many storylines that jump out more than what Fields does in New York. If he can use his athletic gifts the right way and still find a way to stay poised and present in the pocket, we could see a budding star coming to light just a little later than we thought. Projected $758K Star Recruit Spurns Oklahoma After Teasing Commitment Decision

Projected $758K Star Recruit Spurns Oklahoma After Teasing Commitment Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Class of 2026 five-star offensive tackle and Oklahoma target Felix Ojo is nearing a decision amid a busy official visit schedule. Advertisement Ojo (6-foot-7, 275 pounds) plays for Lake Ridge High School in Mansfield, Texas. He is rated as the No. 3 offensive tackle, the No. 1 player in the state, and the No. 6 overall recruit (On3 industry). Ojo, who holds an On3 NIL valuation of $758,000, announced in February his top eight schools: Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, Florida, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame. Ojo loaded his summer with visits, also including trips outside of his top schools. Notre Dame unofficially hosted Ojo on April 10 before he took official trips to Ole Miss (April 18), Texas Tech (April 25), Colorado (May 2), Florida (May 16) and Ohio State (May 30). The Oklahoma visit has been cancelled, as Ojo revealed that his decision is approaching sooner than previously expected. 'Not needed," Ojo said via On3's Hayes Fawcett. "Nearing my decision a lot sooner than later." It's unclear if Ojo's decision has closed the door for Oklahoma in his recruitment, but the Sooners would have likely benefited from getting the highly coveted recruit on campus. Advertisement Texas stands, for now, as the last program to get an official visit from Ojo this summer. Head coach Steve Sarkisian's Longhorns signed the nation's top class in the 2025 cycle and have been linked to the in-state recruit for some time. Ojo previously named the SEC powerhouse as his leader in May, and he is projected to ultimately land at Texas, according to recruiting experts from On3, 247Sports and Rivals. ESPN Projects the No. 1 College Football Program for Next Two Seasons

ESPN Projects the No. 1 College Football Program for Next Two Seasons originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One college football program stands above the rest in ESPN's new projections through the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Advertisement Factors like returning quarterback, likelihood of a multiyear starting quarterback, offensive line/defensive line outlook, roster management, star power and coaching staff were used by ESPN's Adam Rittenberg to rank programs throughout the Power Four along with independent Notre Dame. Perennial powers, of course, make up the top 10, featuring the Alabama Crimson Tide (No. 10), Tennessee Volunteers (No. 9), LSU Tigers (No. 8), Clemson Tigers (No. 7), Penn State Nittany Lions (No. 6) and Notre Dame Fighting Irish (No. 5). The Oregon Ducks kick off the top four after securing the Big Ten Championship and a College Football Playoff appearance under young head coach Dan Lanning. Oregon is the only team to land both a top-four high school and transfer portal class in the 2025 cycle. Sitting third is the defending SEC champion Georgia Bulldogs and acclaimed head coach Kirby Smart, who led his alma mater to back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022. Advertisement While Georgia hasn't logged a playoff win since that run in 2022, Smart and Co. have yet to finish outside the top five in recruiting in nine consecutive years. The top two came down to the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes and rising SEC powerhouse Texas Longhorns. Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day and Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian shake hands prior to the College Football Playoff Cairns/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Head coach Ryan Day's Buckeyes secured their ninth national championship and the first under Day after bouncing back from two regular-season losses in 2024. There's a lot to like about the historic program moving forward, but the Longhorns got ESPN's nod at No. 1. The outlook for Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian begins with star quarterback Arch Manning, a former five-star recruit who is entering his first season as a full-time starter. Advertisement Manning, although eligible for the 2026 NFL draft, could benefit from a return to the Longhorns for the 2026 season. Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning (16).Jerome Miron-Imagn Images "But Manning is in a unique situation because of his background and the money he has already earned in college," Rittenberg wrote. "He doesn't need to rush off to begin his pro career and could benefit from a second season as the starter under coach Steve Sarkisian." Sarkisian has led Texas to back-to-back playoff appearances after rebuilding a roster that totaled 13 wins over his first two seasons at the helm. "Sarkisian got the Texas job largely because of his reputation with playcalling and quarterbacks, but his greatest gains have come up front, especially elevating an underperforming offensive line," Rittenberg wrote. Advertisement Recruiting, particularly along the lines of scrimmage, has seen a noticeable uptick of late. And Texas is coming off the nation's top class in the 2025 cycle. Texas Longhorns linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. (0).Tim Heitman-Imagn Images As far as star power, Manning is an obvious mention. Elsewhere, the defense returns All-Americans in EDGE Colin Simmons and linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. alongside safety Michael Taaffe. Offensively, wide receiver Ryan Wingo will be relied upon heavily. Maintaining elite talent is certainly a barometer of success for future seasons, as is Sarkisian's job security and a well-built staff. "He's (Sarkisian) at an A-list job and likely isn't going anywhere, and he has done a good job establishing and maintaining a veteran staff that includes coordinators Kyle Flood (offense), Pete Kwiatkowski (defense) and Jeff Banks (special teams)." Advertisement Texas will open the 2025 season with no small task, a playoff rematch against Ohio State on the road. That highly-anticipated matchup will take place on Aug. 30 at noon ET on Fox.
