Where was ‘Untamed' filmed? The unexpected locations behind Netflix's Eric Bana mystery

Time Out17-07-2025
A body falls from a cliff at Yosemite National Park. Could it be a mountain climbing accident or a wild coyote attack? Or does a deeper conspiracy brew in the California park's forests? Eric Bana's special agent Kyle Turner gets to the case in Untamed, Netflix's six-episode miniseries created by Mark L Smith.
This isn't the Oscar-nominated screenwriter's first figurative trek through the American wilderness. Smith's previous credits include Leonardo DiCaprio survival drama The Revenant and this year's brutal Netflix western American Primeval.
With Untamed, Smith trades his period settings for a more modern timeline, but the tension remains the same. Fans of slow-burning mysteries like Mare of Easttown and True Detective will be hooked on Agent Turner approaching closer to the truth, oozing style with his greyed beard and horseback riding skills.
But if you're wondering where Untamed was actually filmed, a few surprises await.
Was Untamed actually filmed at Yosemite National Park?
Surprisingly not. Set almost entirely in Yosemite, Eric Bana's brooding cop Kyle Turner describes the California wilderness as 'the size of Rhode Island' with 'five separate highway entrances'. But none of the national park actually features in Untamed.
Instead, the show's crew set up camp mostly in Canada to film the series – and specifically the province of British Columbia. The Canadian province's valleys, cliffs, and wilderness all doubled convincingly to recreate the green beauty and granite roughness of Yosemite National Park.
Mount Seymour
Untamed opens with a mountain climbing expedition gone wrong as a body falls off from the top of a cliff. In the show, this cliff is supposed to represent El Capitan, a granite monolith in Yosemite National Park. To recreate El Capitan, Untamed 's production team relied on Mount Seymour.
Overlooking the city of Vancouver, the mountain is a popular hiking spot much like the California summit it's supposed to mimic in the show. Some of the areas around Seymour were also incorporated in the Yosemite scenes.
Murdo Frazer Park Cabin, North Vancouver
Pemberton Avenue is full of cosy-looking properties, but none of them preserve time and ooze a sense of mysticism like this log cabin in the middle of the woods. So, it seems fitting for this location to serve as Agent Turner's own personal cabin. He leads a solitary, ascetic life in this cabin conveniently nestled within wooded trails, creeks, and a spot for him to 'park' his horse.
While the log cabin hosts the caretakers of the Murdo Fraser Park, it's a popular filming location now. Previous shows to be filmed here include Supernatural, ABC's Once Upon A Time, and Stargate SG-1.
Whistler Olympic Park
As its name suggests, the Whistler Olympic Park hosted parts of the 2010 Winter Olympics with events like ski jumping and cross-country skiing. Since the Olympics, it has turned into a public facility. Netflix features the park – outside of snowy season – as one of the many stand-ins for Yosemite National Park.
Grace Lake
This quaint lake in British Columbia stands in for Grouse Lake, a Yosemite Park lake notorious for its paranormal history. Legend has it that the park's first ranger heard noises of a boy drowning in the lake. Since then, the boy's ghost lures in people to their deaths. This spooky connection is apt for Turner's investigations, as he is haunted by not just the death of the mountain climber from El Capitan but also someone close from his past.
Greenwood Park
Another park that proved crucial for exterior Yosemite shots was North Vancouver's Greenwood Park. The park's many forested trails feature in Untamed as Kyle Turner and the other forest rangers scrounge for evidence.
Deloca Farm, Deroche
As Turner collaborates with newly transferred forest ranger Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago), the duo's findings lead them to a squatter community that leads a hippie-like existence under a cultish leader. The group's open-air base was filmed at Deloca Farm in Deroche. The irony is that Deroche actually hosts an idyllic farming community with a scant population of roughly 140 people.
Nita Lake Lodge
Yosemite's connection with Indigenous populations and cultures compels Turner to dig deeper into the region's past. His trail leads him to the Yan-O-Pah Hotel, a fancy resort built on Indigenous land and covered in artworks from the local tribes. Nita Lake Lodge, a boutique hotel and spa in Whistler, British Columbia, serves as the setting for the Yan-O-Pah.
Interestingly, 'Yan-O-Pah' is the original name of the Vernal Fall, used by the indigenous Miwok people of Yosemite Valley. The name directly translates to 'Valley of the Yosemite' or 'little cloud'.
Eagles Hall, Maple Ridge
The Eagles Hall in Maple Ridge is a prime spot for hosting public gatherings and weddings. But the hall's wooden architecture was perfect to set up as a base for the Forest Rangers in Untamed.
Cheakamus River and 'Balls to the Wall' Waterfall
As Turner and Vasquez get closer to the truth, the forest cops indulge in plenty of hiking across forest trails and waterfalls. The Cheakamus River features in these scenes, with its gushing torrents and towering fir and cedars. The river itself is a tributary of the larger Squamish River. Filming also took place at the 'Balls to the Wall' waterfall, a free-flowing drop in the river's middle section that's a popular spot for adventurous paddlers.
Who stars in Untamed?
Untamed is led by Eric Bana, the Australian star of Troy and Hulk. The role of a divorced, morbid forest agent like Kyle Turner suits Bana, considering his acclaimed turn as a grieving federal agent in the Australian thriller The Dry and its sequel, Force of Nature.
Joining Bana is New Zealander Sam Neill. The Jurassic Park and Peaky Blinders star plays Paul Souter, the chief park ranger at Yosemite who has served in the park for half his life. Lily Santiago stars as Naya Vasquez, the Yosemite ranger squad's latest member.
Support comes from The Staircase actress Rosemarie DeWitt as Turner's ex-wife and a former counsellor. Meanwhile, fresh off his role as Bullseye in Daredevil: Born Again, Wilson Bethel takes aim as an ex-soldier who now serves as the park's wildlife management officer.

Jamie Lee Curtis on why her mother Janet Leigh would've 'been incredibly upset' about her Oscar-winning role

Jamie Lee Curtis calls herself the 'OG nepo baby ' having had a leg up in showbusiness thanks to her famous parents Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis. But the outspoken 66-year-old doesn't think the late Psycho scream queen would've approved of her grittier, unflattering characters like IRS revenue agent Deirdre Beaubeirdre in Everything Everywhere All at Once. 'Today I have a freedom to be myself that my mother's generation would never have allowed,' Jamie revealed in her People cover story Sunday. 'My mother would've been incredibly upset at Everything Everywhere All at Once and how I looked. My mother would have loathed [how I looked].' Curtis continued: 'Her generation was so much about your body and what you look like. And the beauty. The beauty is just who she was. That's what her life was. My mother was literally jaw dropping. But I think that would've been very hard for her to see me with my tummy sticking out.' The Bear actress famously won an Oscar for her performance in Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert's critically-acclaimed multiverse dramedy, which went on to amass $143.4M from a $25M budget in 2022. Jamie also looked rough as Shelly's (Pamela Anderson) hard-living gal pal Annette, a cocktail waitress living in her car, in Gia Coppola's critically-acclaimed 2024 drama The Last Showgirl, which earned $7.1M from a $2M budget. 'Or in Last Showgirl, for [Janet] to see me in that dressing room at 66 years old. That really would've upset her,' Curtis noted. 'I know her very well. I have accepted myself in a much bigger way than I think she felt she was allowed to, through her generation.' The Borderlands actress added: 'I know that my mother was so proud of me and and what I've achieved, that she respected my husband's work and was thrilled to be a grandma.' Leigh passed away, at age 77, in 2004 after a protracted battle with vasculitis while her famous father died, at age 85, in 2010 of cardiac arrest. On Saturday, Jamie - who regrets undergoing a lower blepharoplasty at age 25 - called out the 'genocide of a generation of women by the cosmeceutical industrial complex, who've disfigured themselves.' 'I believe that we have wiped out a generation or two of natural human [appearance],' Curtis told The Guardian. 'The concept that you can alter the way you look through chemicals, surgical procedures, fillers – there's a disfigurement of generations of predominantly women who are altering their appearances. And it is aided and abetted by AI, because now the filter face is what people want. 'I'm not filtered right now. The minute I lay a filter on and you see the before and after, it's hard not to go: "Oh, well that looks better." But what's better? Better is fake.' Curtis continued: 'Her generation was so much about your body and what you look like. And the beauty. The beauty is just who she was. That's what her life was. My mother was literally jaw dropping. But I think that would've been very hard for her to see me with my tummy sticking out' (pictured last Tuesday) The Bear actress also looked rough as Shelly's (R, Pamela Anderson) hard-living gal pal Annette, a cocktail waitress living in her car, in Gia Coppola's critically-acclaimed 2024 drama The Last Showgirl The Borderlands actress told The Guardian: 'I believe that we have wiped out a generation or two of natural human [appearance]. And it is aided and abetted by AI, because now the filter face is what people want' However, the Halloween alum 'minds her business' when it comes to advising her Freakier Friday onscreen daughter Lindsay Lohan, whose facial features are noticeably more taut than they were seven years ago. Jamie noted: 'I'm bossy, very bossy, but I try to mind my own business. She doesn't need my advice. She's a fully functioning, smart woman, creative person. Privately, she's asked me questions, but nothing that's more than an older friend you might ask.' Curtis and the 39-year-old former child star executive produced and reprised their roles in Nisha Ganatra's mother-daughter swap sequel Freakier Friday, which hits US/UK theaters August 8. It's hard to believe it's been 22 years since the Emmy/Grammy nominee and Lindsay portrayed Tess and Anna Coleman in Mark Waters' critically-acclaimed remake of Freaky Friday, which amassed $160.8M at the global box office. Last Tuesday, Jamie confirmed she'll play mystery novelist Jessica Fletcher in Universal's upcoming reboot of the CBS hit series Murder, She Wrote - which aired for 12 seasons spanning 1984-96. 'Oh, it's… happening,' Curtis told ET. 'We're a minute away, but yeah, [I'm] very excited. Very excited. But I'm tamping down my enthusiasm until we start shooting. I have a couple of other things to hustle, but then I'll get to enjoy that work.' The LA native's other upcoming projects include James L. Brooks' political dramedy Ella McCray for 20th Century Studios, Liz Sarnoff's eight-episode series Scarpetta for Amazon Prime Video, and Russell Goldman's scam psychological horror Sender.

David Beckham hugs Harper and Victoria on superyacht amid stormy family feud

For months, rumours have rumbled of a bitter split within the Beckham family - but proud dad David looked happy as a clam as he hugged his daughter and wife on a luxury holiday David Beckham looked in good spirits on the high seas as he hugged his daughter and wife during a trip to St Tropez. The 50-year-old sporting legend joined wife Victoria, 51, and daughter Harper Seven, 14, on the deck of a luxury yacht. ‌ The sport star looked casual in a sand coloured cap and dark t-shirt - and with a smile stretched across his face. Victoria pouted alongside her husband with her hair loose around her shoulders. ‌ While teenage daughter Harper looked pretty in a pink as she wrapped up in a casual hooded top. The trio were spied on the deck of the boat lined up for a photograph together. ‌ The famous family are known for heading to the south of France to enjoy a summer break year after year. And they were joined by second son, Romeo, 22 - who reportedly spent the afternoon zipping around the sea on a jet ski. Father, daughter and wife posed and smiled for the cameras as their boat - worth a reported £16 million - bobbed gently on the Mediterranean waters. The Daily Mail shared the sun-soaked snaps which made the family look like they had not a care in the world while enjoying the picturesque French weather. ‌ The calm image is in contrast to the stormy headlines that have haunted the Beckham family in recent months. A feud is said to have erupted between the family and eldest son Brookyln - who is married to American Billionaire heiress Nicola Peltz. Fans became concerned for the Beckhams after they noticed Brooklyn and his wife snubbed David during his 50th birthday celebrations in May. In subsequent months, there have been reports that Brooklyn and Nicola have clashed with his younger brothers - while other reports have suggested the family have been at odds since Nicola and her husband got married in 2022. There have also been shady comments and social media quips that have left fans reading into the smallest details for evidence of a feud. ‌ On Saturday, social media posts featuring Romeo and his younger sister Harper hinted they were glad to be in the sun and away from feud-fuelled headlines. The duo were spotted heading out for dinner in St Tropez and both cut casual appearances. Romeo was pictured wearing a red baseball cap, teamed with a round neck white sweater. ‌ Meanwhile Harper opted for a white hoodie with the word "Seven" emblazoned across the front of it. Both looked in high spirits as they enjoyed an evening out with their parents. While Vicky, Dave and their kids have been lapping up the sun in France, estranged son Brooklyn has been spotted in the UK - far from his Hollywood home. The couple took a leisurely stroll through a picturesque garden where they were spied by fans. Nicola took a candid photo of her husband by a quaint garden well, while they both opted for casual outfits for their trip. One sweet photo shows Brooklyn kissing Nicola as they pose in front of a mirror. Fans noted, however, that the couple enjoyed time in the UK while the rest of the Beckham family were abroad - raising speculation they may have coordinated their trip to avoid a run in.

I tried Glasgow's new rooftop bar and restaurant, my verdict

Glasgow already boasts several great spots for sipping cocktails while watching the sun set over the skyline, including the Red Sky Bar in Finnieston, House of Gods in Merchant City and Kong in the city centre - just to mention a few. And last night, I went along to the newest addition to the scene, SíSí. My friend and I were invited to have a look around ahead of the official opening on August 1. Upon arrival, we were shown to our table next to a huge window, already providing a unique angle of Glasgow below us. But the real star of the evening was the rooftop, complete with tables and comfortable chairs. The spacious area was beautifully lit up as the sun set behind us - great timing on our part. Below, we could see the People's Palace, Glasgow Green, all along Argyle Street and Central Station form a truly unique point of view. SíSí serves Mexican-American inspired sharing plates paired with craft cocktails. We ordered seven dishes between us, including the excellent guacamole with chips, scallops, crab, a beef brisket tortilla dish and my personal favourite - the flautas. This is a vegetarian meal made of a fried corn tortilla stuffed with pumpkin, kale, queso oaxaca, crema and salsa macha. It was excellent and very filling. The plates were beautifully presented, light and delicious. What impressed me mostly was how well-seasoned the food was. To drink, we tried four cocktails between us: the Cherry Paloma, the Airmail, the Trouble in Paradise and Coco Maiz. They were all great, but if I had to highlight one of them, the Cherry Paloma was the perfect amount of fruity and smoky. If I could do it all over again, I would order that and not let my friend pick it first, leaving me with only a couple of sips of goodness. We even had space for dessert, mezcal cranachan for me and churros for my dining partner. Overall, I enjoyed our time very much at SíSí, I only wish the weather had been a bit warmer and drier for the occasion. During the next heatwave, you will know where to find me.
