Chandigarh CFSL burns midnight oil, nails slain terrorists' link with Pahalgam
What followed was a night of frenetic activity which saw forensic experts working against the clock, test-firing weapons, examining ammunition and analysing ballistic evidence. At the crack of dawn, around 4.45 am, they were ready with the report, clearly establishing that the weapons recovered from the three slain terrorists were the same that were used in the April 22 dastardly attack that left 25 terrorists and a local dead.
Hours later, Union home minister Amit Shah announced in the Lok Sabha: 'Three terrorists, Suleman alias Faizal, Afghani and Jibran, were eliminated in the Operation Mahadev conducted in Jammu and Kashmir's Dachigam forest. While Suleman was an A-category commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba, Afghani was also an A-category LeT terrorist. Jibran, too, was a notorious and wanted terrorist. All three involved in the killing of our citizens at Baisaran valley in Pahalgam have now been eliminated.'
Shah informed the House that weapons recovered during Operation Mahadev have been ballistically matched with those used in the Pahalgam firing incident, establishing a direct link between the slain terrorists and the mass killing.
'I have the ballistic report, which has been cross-verified by six senior experts. They confirmed on a video call at 4.46 am today that the rifles recovered from the terrorists are the same weapons used in the Pahalgam attack,' Shah said.
'Three firearms were recovered from the slain terrorists: An M4 rifle and two AK-47s. These were promptly sent to CFSL Chandigarh, where a dedicated four-member forensic team along with Directorate of Forensic Science Services, under the home ministry, conducted ballistic matching tests,' said a forensic expert, involved in the analysis. 'Experts in Chandigarh performed test-firing of the seized weapons to obtain cartridge cases, which were then compared with the ballistic evidence collected from the April 22 Pahalgam attack site. The bullets and cartridges recovered earlier had been preserved and catalogued for forensic analysis,' added the expert.
Each firearm, as the CFSL expert emphasised, has distinctive characteristics. Even two weapons of the same make and calibre leave different microscopic marks on bullets and cartridge cases due to differences in manufacturing and wear & tear. These unique patterns act like fingerprints for the firearm.
'When a gun is fired, burning gunpowder creates gas pressure, which forces the bullet through the barrel. As the bullet travels, the barrel's rifling (spiral grooves) leaves microscopic scratch marks. Meanwhile, the cartridge case picks up marks from various internal parts of the firearm such as the firing pin, breech face, extractor, ejector, and chamber,' he added.
As part of the forensic examination, the recovered firearms were subjected to test firing. The weapons were loaded with appropriate ammunition and fired in a controlled environment to obtain test cartridge cases. Using a comparison microscope, CFSL experts placed the test-fired cartridge cases side-by-side with those recovered from the Pahalgam crime scene. A successful match was established, confirming that the same weapons were used in both incidents. 'The test cartridge cases matched perfectly with those recovered from the Pahalgam site. This is conclusive proof,' said another senior forensic scientist.
'Earlier forensic examination had suggested that three firearms had been used in Pahalgam attack, indicating the use of multiple firearms. The recovery of the M4 and two AK-47 rifles aligns with that finding. The cartridge cases, through headstamp markings and dimensional analysis, helped identify the type of ammunition used, adding another layer of confirmation to the weapons' origin,' shared the expert.

Shinde meets Modi, targets Uddhav on INDIA bloc talks as both Sena chiefs signal national alignments
In what is being seen as symbolism and political posturing, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and reaffirmed his party's ties with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). At a time when Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray was also in New Delhi, Shinde attacked the former for aligning with the INDIA bloc and exploring a tie-up with the MNS ahead of civic body polls. While Shinde and his family met PM Modi at the latter's official residence, Uddhav and his son Aaditya Thackeray were in the national capital scheduled to attend an INDIA bloc meeting on Thursday. The presence of both Sena chiefs in Delhi — with each meeting their respective alliance partners — served as a clear reflection of their sharpening political identities and positioning at the national level. Sources also confirmed that Shinde had a closed-door 30-minute meeting with PM Modi without aides, during which state-related issues and electoral strategy were discussed. 'We took the path of Lok Kalyan Marg shown by Balasaheb, they went to 10 Janpath,' Shinde said after meeting the PM. 'That clearly shows who is following Balasaheb Thackeray's ideology. People of the country are are doing things Balasaheb never approved of,' he said, launching a scathing attack on Uddhav. Shinde also emphasized that the Shiv Sena was the fourth largest ally of the NDA. He accused Uddhav of 'sailing in two boats' by holding talks with INDIA bloc leaders while simultaneously keeping the door open for an alliance with Raj Thackeray's MNS. 'Only someone who has lost confidence in himself does that. In a democracy, everyone has the right to form alliances and coalitions. However, some people, having lost the trust of the public and are trying to balance on two stones,' he said in a veiled reference to Uddhav. 'People vote for those who work; those who sit at home are kept at home by the public,' he said. 'When Veer Savarkar was being insulted, they remained silent because they abandoned Hindutva,' Shinde said. Taking another swipe, he added, 'Shiv Sena is a party for public welfare, while their group is a private limited company.' During the meeting with PM, Shinde, accompanied by his wife Lata Shinde, son and MP Dr Shrikant Shinde, and daughter-in-law Vrushali Shinde, presented PM Modi with a specially commissioned painting of Lord Mahadev, crafted by acclaimed artist Kishor Nandivdekar. The gift, Shinde said, symbolised the successful 'Operation Sindoor' and 'Operation Mahadev', India's retaliatory strikes against the perpetrators of the Pahalgam terror attack. 'Just as Lord Mahadev vanquished evil, our armed forces under the Prime Minister's leadership eliminated the terrorists,' he said. The painting, he added, was a tribute to that national effort and resolve. Earlier in the day, Shinde met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and praised him for becoming the longest-serving Home Minister in the country's history. 'He fulfilled Balasaheb Thackeray's dream by abrogating Article 370, crushed terrorism through Operation Mahadev, and strengthened the cooperative sector. His leadership is decisive and efficient,' Shinde said. Reiterating his Sena's political stand, Shinde announced that the Shiv Sena will support the NDA's candidate in the upcoming vice-presidential election and contest local body polls in Maharashtra as part of the Mahayuti alliance. 'Just like we fought the Assembly elections together, we'll go into civic polls united,' he said. Shinde used the occasion to question Uddhav Thackeray's Hindutva credentials, accusing him of abandoning the ideology and remaining silent on insults to Veer Savarkar. 'They gave up Hindutva. They stayed silent when Savarkar was insulted. That's why people won't stand by them,' he said. Targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Shinde added, 'Questioning the Army's bravery, defaming India and the PM abroad, speaking the language of Pakistan — is not patriotism but love for Pakistan.' Meanwhile, Uddhav Thackeray's camp maintained its engagement with the INDIA alliance and met NCP(SP) chief Sharad Pawar in New Delhi. A day earlier, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi met PM Modi, though both sides termed it a courtesy call. Uddhav is expected to join Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders for a strategy dinner ahead of the bloc's formal meeting. In a separate development, Shinde addressed public concerns over the relocation of a 36-year-old elephant named Madhuri from a Jain Math in Maharashtra to Gujarat's Vantara centre. He said the state government would file a review petition in the Supreme Court. 'The government respects public sentiment. Both Maharashtra and Vantara will be parties to the case,' he said.

Shiv Sena to back NDA in vice-presidential polls, will contest civic body election with Mahayuti: Eknath Shinde
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde on Wednesday asserted his party's strong support for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the upcoming vice-presidential elections. Shinde, who is currently on a visit to Delhi, made the announcement after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with party MPs. Shinde and his family will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing the media later, Shinde congratulated Shah for his record-breaking tenure. 'Amit Shah ji has become the first home minister in the country's history to serve for 2,258 consecutive days. We met him to extend our greetings. He is a decisive and efficient leader who has fulfilled the dream of Balasaheb Thackeray by abrogating Article 370, effectively cracked down on terrorism through Operation Mahadev, and led efforts against Naxalism. His contributions to the cooperative sector and national development are exemplary,' Shinde said. Commenting on the Shiv Sena's long-standing alliance with the BJP, Shinde stated, 'Even before the formal formation of the NDA, Shiv Sena and BJP have shared a historic alliance. Ours is the oldest and most trusted partnership within the NDA. This year marks 25 years of the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance envisioned by Balasaheb Thackeray.' He added that Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde represented the party in the NDA's meeting held on Tuesday. 'Shiv Sena will extend full support to the NDA candidate in the vice-presidential election,' Shinde reiterated. He also confirmed that the Mahayuti alliance would contest the upcoming local body elections collectively. 'Just as we won the Assembly elections together, we will also fight the local body polls as Mahayuti partners,' he said. On the issue of the 36-year-old elephant, Madhuri, which was relocated to a Vantara centre in Gujarat from a Jain Math in Maharashtra following a court order, sparking protests, Shinde said the state government would file a review petition in the Supreme Court. 'The government respects public sentiment on this matter,' he said, adding that both the state and the Vantara group would be parties to the case. In what appeared to be a veiled jibe at the Opposition, which has been alleging that Shinde has been holding secret meetings with BJP leaders in Delhi, Shinde remarked, 'We are here to meet MPs and attend the session. We do not operate in secrecy.'

Karnataka Cabinet likely to approve Nagamohan Das report on August 7
The State Cabinet, which is expected to meet on Thursday, is likely to approve the recommendations of the commission headed by H.N. Nagamohan Das, which submitted its report on internal reservation for 101 Scheduled Castes in Karnataka to the government on Monday. According to leaked data, the report recommended 4% quota for Lambanis, Koramas, Korachas, and Bhovis (touchable communities) against the 4.5% recommended during the previous BJP government. It has provided 6% reservation for the Dalit left, 5% for the Dalit right, 1% to more than 40 nomadic tribes classified as micro communities and 1% for Adi Karnataka (AK), Adi Dravida (AD) and Adi Andhra (AA) communities. Lambani community leaders, including Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani and former MLC Prakash Rathod, said that the community was 'disappointed' with the 4% quota recommended by the commission and demanded 5%, as more than 80% of the people have been living below the poverty line and as migrants. They claimed that there were several loopholes in the method adopted to collect the data of the community. Mr. Rathod questioned the authenticity of the data and claimed the Lambanis constituted 4.68% of the SC population in the State. Meanwhile, the Dalit left groups, which have been demanding internal reservation, have said that the government should implement the recommendations of the report at the earliest.
