PETALING JAYA : Sangetha Jayakumar, the daughter of former PKR vice-president Dr Xavier Jayakumar, has been appointed Wanita PKR secretary for the 2025-2028 term.
Her appointment was announced by the wing's chief Fadhlina Sidek today.
Prior to the party polls, Sangetha had criticised former Bar Council president Ambiga Sreenevasan for proposing an end to the women's wings in political parties, saying the idea was 'detached' from the realities faced by women in politics.
Sangetha is a former Wanita PKR vice-president.
Fadhlina appointed Perlis opposition leader Gan Ay Ling to the post of treasurer. Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Pua Pei Ling will lead the strategy bureau while former Machap Jaya assemblyman Ginie Lim will lead the international bureau.
In a statement, Fadhlina said: 'I am confident they will be able to carry out their responsibilities with integrity and will be progressive and inclusive in pushing the party's agenda.'

Trump meets with Intel CEO after demanding he resign

Trump said on his Truth Social platform that he met with Lip-Bu Tan along with Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent. — Photographer: Alex Wroblewski/Bloomberg WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Monday said he had a "very interesting" meeting with the chief of US chip maker Intel, just days after calling for his resignation. Trump said on his Truth Social platform that he met with Lip-Bu Tan along with Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent. "The meeting was a very interesting one," Trump said in the post. "His success and rise is an amazing story." Trump added that members of his cabinet are going to spend time with Tan and bring the president "suggestions" next week. "Mr. Tan had the honor of meeting with President Trump for a candid and constructive discussion on Intel's commitment to strengthening US technology and manufacturing leadership," the company said in a posted statement. Intel added that it looks "forward to working closely with him and his Administration as we restore this great American company." Trump demanded last week that the recently-hired boss of Intel resign "immediately," after a Republican senator raised national security concerns over his links to firms in China. "The CEO of INTEL is highly CONFLICTED and must resign, immediately. There is no other solution to this problem," Trump posted on Truth Social last Thursday. Tan released a statement at the time saying that the company was engaged with the Trump administration to address the concerns raised and ensure officials "have the facts." Intel is one of Silicon Valley's most iconic companies but its fortunes have been dwarfed by Asian powerhouses TSMC and Samsung, which dominate the made-to-order semiconductor business. In a statement, Tan said there has been "a lot of misinformation circulating" about his past roles at Walden International and Cadence Design Systems. "I have always operated within the highest legal and ethical standards," Tan said. The Malaysia-born tech industry veteran took the helm at struggling Intel in March, announcing layoffs as White House tariffs and export restrictions muddied the market. Intel's niche has been chips used in traditional computing processes, which are steadily being eclipsed by the AI revolution. – AFP

Bangladesh seeks Malaysia's support in rebuilding efforts post-uprising

PUTRAJAYA: Bangladesh has requested Malaysia's assistance in its post-uprising recovery efforts as the country stabilises after last year's student protests. Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus stated that Bangladesh is now on the right track towards progress. He thanked Malaysia and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for their support during the nation's difficult period. Speaking at a joint press conference with Anwar, Yunus noted that Anwar was the first foreign leader to visit Bangladesh after his return to office last year. Yunus described Anwar as a reliable ally, saying, 'It was a wonderful feeling to find a friend to come in time of need when we're desperately looking for support somewhere.' He added, 'We are happy to have that and we strengthen our resolve to making sure Bangladesh is moving in the right ways.' Since assuming leadership, Yunus said his government has worked to restore stability in the country. 'We are happy we restore order in the country, we restore the economy, the institutions and functions,' he said. He confirmed that Bangladesh is preparing for elections in February to establish a new government. 'Now we are ready for elections that will be called in coming February to create new government,' Yunus stated. He emphasised Bangladesh's need for international backing, saying, 'So we need a lot of support. We are looking to Malaysia's support, always.' During his meeting with Anwar, Yunus expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Yunus, on a three-day official visit, also encouraged Malaysian businesses to invest in Bangladesh, calling it a land of 'tremendous opportunity.' He highlighted Bangladesh's request for Malaysia's assistance, as ASEAN Chair, in resolving Rohingya refugee issues. 'So we need all the help we can get. And Malaysia is a good friend,' Yunus added. Malaysia-Bangladesh trade grew by 5.1 per cent in 2024, reaching RM13.35 billion (US$2.92 billion). Bangladesh is Malaysia's second-largest trading partner in South Asia, exporting textiles and footwear while importing petroleum and palm oil. Diplomatic relations between the two nations were established in 1972. - Bernama

Sekretariat Solidariti Zara, which comprises university students and civil society groups, also called for the outcomes of the commission's investigations to be made public. The group submitted a memorandum to MPs outside the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur today, after marching from Taman Tugu while carrying banners and placards calling for justice for Zara. In the memorandum, they urged the home ministry and police to hold an inquest into Zara's death. The university students and civil society group representatives marching from Taman Tugu to Parliament. 'Too many lives have been lost because of bullying. For many years, bullying cases have occurred without holistic solutions and concrete policy reforms,' said the memorandum. It also urged the police to publicly apologise for the delay in probing Zara's death as well as the purported mishandling of the investigation. 'Delayed action reflects not only weak governance, but also a failure to uphold the responsibility of ensuring students' safety.' The group urged the home ministry to carry out specialised training for police officers to better handle bullying cases, and for teachers, school administrators and wardens to undergo mandatory training for crisis intervention and proper methods to receive complaints from bullying victims. It likewise urged the education ministry to engage with civil society to improve its SOPs on handling bullying cases in schools. Two days ago, Zara's remains were exhumed for a post-mortem after the Attorney-General's Chambers ordered the police to further investigate the 13-year-old's death. Yesterday, Bukit Aman announced that it would take over the investigation of the case. Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died in hospital the following day. The education ministry subsequently announced that it would review its SOPs and guidelines on school safety and for handling disciplinary issues, including bullying. Education director-general Azam Ahmad said the ministry's portal for bullying complaints would also be simplified, with students filing complaints on bullying given the option to remain anonymous to protect their identity.
