MUMBAI: The Centre has finally appointed a full-time vice-chancellor for Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) after nearly two years of interim leadership. Badri Narayan Tiwari, a social historian with interests in culture and marginality, will helm the institute as its first official appointee since the Centre brought TISS under its administrative fold.

His five-year appointment comes 22 months after Prof Manoj Tiwari, director of IIM-Mumbai, was made acting TISS VC in Sept 2023.
New TISS VC was earlier with JNU, GB Pant Social Science Institute
TISS, long nurtured under the stewardship of the Tata Trusts, is now subject to central oversight, following the 2023 directive bringing all institutions with over 50% govt funding under the Centre's jurisdiction.
Badri Narayan Tiwari, until recently director of Govind Ballabh Pant Social Science Institute, Prayagraj, established a Kumbh study centre and an ethnographic museum. His earlier stint at
, where he was part of the Centre for the Study of Discrimination and Exclusion, sharpened his engagement with themes of social justice and subaltern narratives.
His scholarly compass- spanning democracy, popular culture, Dalit assertion, and anthropological history - experts said, aligns closely with the ethos TISS has long embodied. But the institute's foundations were quietly strengthened during the interim stewardship of Prof Manoj Tiwari. In his dual role as director of IIM-Mumbai and acting vice-chancellor, Prof Tiwari ensured that the long-pending Memorandum of Agreement was formally drafted, placing the institute on firmer administrative ground.
He also initiated a sweeping accreditation drive across departments, a move that helped elevate the institute's national ranking.
Perhaps more tangibly, he is credited with unlocking and disbursing Rs 14 crore in arrears, some of which were pending for years-an intervention that restored both morale and momentum. It was under his watch that TISS admissions were aligned with the CUET, marking a shift towards uniformity in the higher education landscape.

India will remain competitive: Scindia on US tariff impact on telecom equipment exports

New Delhi: Indian telecom equipment exports to the US will remain competitive even after imposition of additional tariffs, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Thursday. According to official data, telecom equipment worth about Rs 85,000 crore have been produced under the PLI scheme, of which equipment worth Rs 16,000 crore have been exported to various countries. "We will remain competitive," Scindia said when asked about the impact of the proposed US tariff on telecom equipment export. He was speaking on the sidelines of an event organised by retailers' body CAIT on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the first cellular call in India. According to government and industry sources, Indian electronics industry has around two weeks' breather from the proposed tariffs due to the pending review of a key section that covers technologies under the ongoing bilateral negotiations. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced imposition of a 25 per cent tariff on all goods coming from India starting August 1, plus an unspecified penalty for buying military equipment and crude oil from Russia. "Section 232, which covers electronics and technology products, is expected to come up for review after two weeks. When the US had imposed basic 10 per cent duty, then also technology products were exempted due to pending review of Section 232. This is the position as of now. We don't know what will (happen) after two weeks," a government source said.

'Ok, Leave Rs 150, But At Least Return My Rs 750': Malegaon Blast Accused To Court

During the court hearing, Kulkarni stated that Rs 900 was confiscated from him at the time of his arrest, but only Rs 750 was officially recorded Sameer Kulkarni, one of the seven individuals acquitted in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, made an unusual request in court, he asked for his Rs 750, confiscated during his arrest, to be returned. During the court hearing, Kulkarni stated that Rs 900 was confiscated from him at the time of his arrest, but only Rs 750 was officially recorded. 'During the arrest, Rs 900 was confiscated from me, but only Rs 750 was shown on paper. Ok, leave Rs 150, but at least return my Rs 750," he told the court. The presiding judge noted the request but reminded him that court directives forbid the return of any case property until further orders. Though Kulkarni is now free, he must wait for the official clearance to retrieve the amount, NDTV reported. Kulkarni also asked for permission to raise nationalist slogans such as 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai" for three seconds, but the court declined, citing the need to maintain discipline in court proceedings. About Malegaon Blast Case Seventeen years after the Malegaon blast killed six people and injured more than 100, a special court in Mumbai on Thursday acquitted all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit, declaring a lack of 'reliable and cogent evidence." The court sated, 'Terrorism has no religion" and warned against convictions based on perception alone. Additionally, the court awarded compensation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act: Rs 2 lakh each to the six victims' families and Rs 50,000 to each of the injured 101 individuals. The father of the youngest victim, 10-year-old Farheen, decried the verdict as unacceptable and vowed to take the matter to the Supreme Court. The trial, initiated by the Maharashtra ATS in 2018 and later overseen by the NIA, involved testimony from 323 witnesses. Thirty-seven turned hostile during proceedings. Special Judge AK Lahoti flagged serious shortcomings in the prosecution's case, noting that suspicion alone could not serve as proof. With these findings, the accused were granted the benefit of the doubt and released. (With inputs from PTI) view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. BRS faults Congress Govt. for not keeping promises made to Dalits, minorities

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has alleged that Congress has failed to implement the Chevella Declaration, made before the elections, and has stopped giving government procurement contracts to 'Bahujan' (Dalit and tribal) communities. In a statement, party leader and former IPS officer R.S. Praveen Kumar said on Thursday that the previous BRS Government had introduced Dalit Bandhu scheme to enable Dalits take up businesses and small contracts and had also exempted 40% of the EMD (earnest money deposit) required for contracts. However, the present Congress Government had not extended that relief to SC, ST contractors in the matter of tenders pertaining to the residential educational institutions. It was the AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge who had announced as part of the Chevella Declaration that Dalit Bandhu amount would be increased to ₹12 lakh from ₹10 lakh. Similarly, it had also announced an 18% quota to SC communities in the government procurement contracts but had not given even one contract to them during that last 20 months. Separately, former Deputy Chief Minister Md. Mahamood Ali said the Congress party had made several promises to the minorities before the elections but had failed to keep any of them so far. He reminded the government that it had promised a sub-plan for minorities and enhancement of honorarium for 'imams and muezzins' among many others, but had not fulfilled them so far.
