Six aircraft engine shutdown incidents and three May Day Call reported in India, says Union minister Murlidhar Mohol
"During 2025, from January to July (till date), a total of 06 incidents of engine shutdown and a total of 03 incidents of May Day calls have been reported," the Minister said in a written response to the Lok Sabha, as per the news report.
The Minister also said that there have been two cases of engine shutdown, each involving IndiGo and SpiceJet, while one incident involved Air India and another with Alliance Air.
The three incidents involving the Mayday calls also included the Air India crash of the AI 171 aircraft on 12 June 2025. The aircraft was headed towards London Gatwick Airport from India's Ahmedabad Airport. Moments after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport, the aircraft crashed into a nearby building.
The other two mayday calls were from IndiGo and Air India Express, according to the agency report.
A Mayday call is a globally recognised signal of distress, mostly used in aviation or maritime communications. The call sign is used in a life-threatening situation, like a potential aircraft crash. In aviation, a pilot repeats the Mayday call three times in a row to inform the air traffic controller (ATC) of the nearest airbase or airport in serious need of help.
According to the agency report, the Union Minister of State of Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, also stated that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's initial report on the Air India crash of 12 June 2025, which was published based on factual information, does not contain any conclusion about the incident and that the investigations are still underway.
"Every aspect is being looked into for determining the probable cause(s)/contributory factor(s) leading to the accident," said Mohol, responding to a query on whether the government will investigate the crash from a sabotage angle.

Man, his two lovers held for killing wife in Odishas Ganjam
Berhampur, Aug 7 (PTI) A 30-year-old man and his two women lovers were arrested on Thursday for allegedly killing his wife in Odisha's Ganjam district, police said. The incident took place at Nuagaon village under Bellaguntha police station limits of the district on Monday, the police said. Santosh Naik, a daily wager and his lovers Anita Naik (26) and Sruti Parida (21) were arrested for allegedly killing his wife Puja Naik (28) and terming her death as suicide, a police officer said. Santosh got married to Puja about 12 years ago and has four children, three daughters and a son, he said. The three persons were arrested on the basis of a written complaint lodged by the deceased's mother Shanti Naik of Buguda area in the district on Monday at Bellaguntha police station. According to the complaint, Shanti went to her daughter's house after getting a phone call from Santosh that Puja had committed suicide by hanging. However, Santosh did not allow her to enter his house. She, however, saw her daughter lying on the ground wrapped in a cloth. She alleged that her daughter was having frequent quarrels with her husband for keeping an illicit relationship with two women, as per the complaint. 'Puja's husband and two of his women friends frequently physically and mentally tortured her. They might have killed her and painted her death as suicide," alleged Shanta in her police complaint. After receiving the complaint, police went to the spot, seized the body and started an investigation. Inspector in Charge (IIC), Bellaguntha police station, Rebati Sabar said, 'We have registered a case under relevant sections of BNS based on her complaint. After getting prima facie evidence during the investigation, the trio, including Santosh and his two lovers, were arrested." Further investigation into the case is in progress, she said. Child trafficking racket busted in Indore, 6 women among 9 arrested
Agency: PTI Indore, Aug 7 (PTI) Nine people, including six women, have been arrested here for alleged involvement in an organised racket which sold infants to childless couples, police said on Thursday. The arrests were made after the Raoji Bazar police received a complaint regarding an attempt to sell a two-month-old child for Rs 10 lakh, said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Dishes Agrawal. The accused were identified as Pramila Sahu, Vandana Makwana, Pooja Verma, Neelam Verma, Neetu Shukla, Ranu alias Pooja, Santosh Sharma, Vijay Mogkar and Viresh Jatav. Man gets 20-yr jail term for raping step-daughter
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) A Delhi court has sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping his teen stepdaughter, observing there was no straitjacket formula for sentencing. The court said the 'twin objectives" of deterrence of crimes and reformation of a convict needed to be balanced. Additional sessions judge Ankit Mehta was hearing the arguments on the quantum of sentencing against the 32-year-old man, convicted for rape under IPC and Section 6 (aggravated penetrative assault) of the POCSO Act. On August 2, the court said, 'Accused inserted his finger in the private parts of the victim, amounting to rape or penetrative sexual assault. It was further proved that the convict had watched the victim while she was taking a bath and had also lain down upon her." The sentencing, the court said, had to be commensurate with the relevant factors, including nature and gravity of the offence, how the crime was committed, the condition of the victim, the convict's age and whether the convict was a habitual offender. 'There is no straitjacket formula for the same, and as such, both the aggravating and mitigating factors need to be considered. Further, sentencing needs to balance the twin objectives of deterrence and reform of the convict," the verdict said. The court awarded Rs 10.5 lakh compensation to the minor survivor.
