Pithoragarh, Jul 22 (PTI) The second batch of 47 pilgrims returning from the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through the Lipulekh pass in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district arrived back in India on Tuesday, officials said.
An official from Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN), the nodal agency for the pilgrimage, said the group reached Lipulekh at 10:15 am after completing their journey in Tibet. Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel welcomed the pilgrims at the border amid foggy weather conditions, the official added.
The batch originally comprised 48 pilgrims. However, former Union minister of state Meenakshi Lekhi, who was part of the group, returned to India two days earlier after suffering injuries in a fall from a horse during the yatra.
While the group was scheduled to halt overnight in Bundi, they will instead be accommodated at the Gunji camp due to ongoing panchayat elections, the official said.
This year, around 250 pilgrims are undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in five batches through the Lipulekh route. PTI DPT HIG

Pakistan: Imran Khan's PTI holds protests today on second anniversary of his arrest

The protests aim to draw attention to what the party describes as the unjust detention of Imran Khan, who has been incarcerated by Pakistan authorities since his arrest on August 5, 2023. read more The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party on Monday (August 4) announced plans for nationwide protests on August 5, to mark the second anniversary of the arrest of its founder and former prime minister, Imran Khan. The protests aim to draw attention to what the party describes as the unjust detention of Khan, who has been incarcerated since his arrest on August 5, 2023. Khan was arrested at his residence in Lahore following a court conviction in a corruption case. Since then, he has remained in custody at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, facing additional convictions in other cases. The PTI, alongside an alliance of opposition parties known as the Tehreek Tahaffuz Ain-e-Pakistan (TTAP), has framed Khan's detention as 'illegal' and is mobilising a protest movement to demand his release. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Allegations of atrocities towards PTI supporters Zufiqar Bukhari, an adviser to Khan, condemned the Punjab government's response to the planned protests, alleging that authorities have already begun targeting PTI workers. 'Fearing protest by PTI, the Punjab Government has started arresting party workers, descending into madness by barging into their residences last night, without warrant or providing any arrestable offence,' Bukhari stated. He noted that arrests have occurred in Lahore and Rawalpindi, though he did not provide specific numbers. Bukhari criticised the preemptive crackdown, saying, 'Their crime? Dare to state a protest, which is yet to happen. That's not lawful, that's tyranny.' The Express Tribune reported that the PTI, under the TTAP banner, is preparing to launch a significant protest movement. At an emergency press conference on Sunday at the PTI District Secretariat in Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), TTAP Secretary General Asad Qaiser outlined the plans. 'On August 5, a nationwide protest will be held under the flags of Pakistan, the PTI, and the white flag of peace,' Qaiser announced, stressing that the protests would remain peaceful and within the bounds of Pakistan's constitution and laws. Qaiser highlighted the significance of the date, marking two years since Khan's 'illegal' arrest, and called for transparent legal proceedings. 'If there is any evidence against Khan, then it should be presented in an open court,' he urged. He praised Khan as a transformative leader, stating, 'Imran Khan is the most popular and dignified leader of this nation, who not only elevated Pakistan's image internationally but also gave the nation a vision.' Qaiser added that Khan's detention represents a 'direct attack on democracy, the Constitution, and the rule of law.' PTI planning district-level protests Rather than organising a centralised rally in Islamabad, the PTI has opted for district-level protests across the country, following Khan's instructions. In Peshawar and Khyber districts, a rally led by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur will commence at 3:30 pm from Hayatabad Toll Plaza on Ring Road and proceed to Qila Bala Hisar. In Swabi, protesters will gather at the Ambar Interchange for a day-long demonstration starting at 3:30 pm and continuing until Isha (evening) prayers. In Nowshera, a protest is planned at Khairabad, also beginning at 3:30 pm. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD To ensure widespread participation and documentation, all members of the National Assembly, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, and PTI ticket holders have been directed to record videos of their gatherings, either from their residences or protest starting points. These videos will be submitted to district organisations and forwarded to regional leadership for coordination.

PM Modi to speak at key NDA meet today ahead of Vice-President polls as Parliament deadlock continues

The NDA meeting will be chaired by PM Narendra Modi a few days before the beginning of nominations on 7 August for the Vice Presidential elections. The BJP allies coalition has to finalise its candidate by 21 August, the last day of filing nominations, when the Monsoon Session of Parliament will be held. The Opposition is raising its pitch against the ruling coalition on the SIR in Bihar and Modi's meeting will be his first address to the NDA's parliamentarians after a long gap, PTI said. PM likely to be felicitated PM Modi is also likely to be felicitated by the NDA's parliamentary party on its decision to give a strong military response to the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, PTI said. Vice president poll on 9 September The polling for the vice presidency will be held on 9 September if both the NDA and the Opposition field their candidates. The electoral college for the vice presidential elections 2025 has a current strength of 782 members and comprises MPs of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Sources said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and a few BJP national general secretaries will be meeting allies and coordinating with them for the vice presidential poll. After the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in which the BJP lost its majority but comfortably crossed the halfway mark with the help of its allies, the sessional meeting of the party's MPs was enlarged to include the party's allies as well. Modi had addressed the first such meeting on July 2. Before the last Bihar assembly election, he used to address the weekly meetings of the BJP Parliament logjam party which has since then expanded to include the party's allies such as TDP, JD(U) and LJP (Ram Vilas). Modi at these meetings often delves into a range of political and governance issues besides at times touching upon the government's agenda in Parliament.

NCERT Class 8 Textbook Under Scrutiny After Former Royal Family Member Raises Objection

Last Updated: Member of former royal family, Chaitanya Raj Singh argued that the map incorrectly portrays Jaisalmer as part of the historical Maratha Empire. The Class 8 Social Science textbook published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has faced criticism after a former member of Jaisalmer's royal family highlighted a historical inaccuracy in one of its maps. On Monday evening, Chaitanya Raj Singh, a member of Jaisalmer's former royal family, took to social media platform 'X' to denounce the map on page 71 of Unit 3 of the NCERT textbook. He argued that the map incorrectly portrays Jaisalmer as part of the historical Maratha Empire, labeling the claim as 'factless, historically misleading, and seriously objectionable." He stressed that such factual inaccuracies in educational materials undermine the credibility of national institutions and insult the legacy of those who defended the state's sovereignty and pride through generations. 'The map shown in the NCERT Social Science textbook for Class 8 (Unit 3, page number 71) depicts Jaisalmer as a part of the then Maratha Empire, which is historically misleading, factually baseless, and deeply objectionable. Such unverified and historically unsubstantiated information not only raises questions about the credibility of institutions like NCERT but also hurts our glorious history and public sentiments," he posted on X. 'This is not just a matter of factual correction but is connected to our historical dignity, self-respect, and the integrity of the national curriculum. Prompt and concrete action is expected on this matter," he added. — Chaitanya Raj Singh (@crsinghbhati) August 4, 2025 Singh has called for an immediate correction and appealed to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to take prompt action, stating that the error disrespects the dignity and historical truth of the Jaisalmer state. He emphasised that Jaisalmer, founded in 1178 CE by Rawal Jaisal of the Bhati clan, has no recorded history of Maratha control, taxation, or invasion. Singh noted that even the Mughals were unable to conquer Jaisalmer, which remained an independent princely state for centuries before integrating into the Indian Republic after independence. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
