Netflix's Hunchback of Notre-Dame Movie Casts Acclaimed Actor as Quasimodo

Yahooa day ago

Netflix has greenlit a movie retelling of Quasimodo, set to reimagine the life of the hunchbacked man said to have inspired Victor Hugo's 1831 cult gothic novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. The streamer has also enlisted an acclaimed French actor to portray the character from the literary classic.
The project, which will be called Quasimodo, is set to begin production this summer in France. Jean-Francois Richet (Plane, Mesrine) is on board to direct, with the script written by Eric Besnard (Delicieux, Wrath of Man). It is being produced by Clément Miserez and Matthieu Warter via Mediawan's Radar Films.
The logline for Quasimodo reads: 'Set in Paris on the eve of the July Revolution (1830), this film reimagines the life of the man said to have inspired Victor Hugo's iconic character, Quasimodo. As the cholera epidemic spreads through the city, he's caught between political turmoil and an impossible love.'
According to Deadline, Vincent Cassel has been cast in the titular role. Quasimodo will reunite the director with Cassel, who starred in Mesrine and The Emperor of Paris. The actor is best known for his performances in La Haine, The Apartment, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc, Brotherhood of the Wolf, The Crimson Rivers, Ocean's Twelve, Read My Lips, Irreversible, Elizabeth, Black Swan, Eastern Promises, and My King, among others.
He most recently appeared in David Cronenberg's The Shrouds and Terry McDonough's Damaged. Quasimodo won't be Cassel's first time working for a feature adaptation of a novel classic, having previously starred in The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan and The Three Musketeers: Milady.
Previous actors who played Quasimodo include Charles Laughton, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hulce in Disney's classic 1996 animated movie, and more.
Other details about Netflix's Quasimodo remain under wraps.

Yukon Public Libraries introduces summer reading passport

June 13 is the last day of school for most students across the territory. As kids spill out the doors of schools and into the sunshine, the Yukon Public Libraries is introducing an initiative to make sure they don't leave their books behind. For the first time, Yukon Public Libraries is launching the Summer Reading Passport Program across all 15 libraries in the territory: the English-language passports are available at the Whitehorse library, and will be arriving at community libraries in the coming days. There will also be French language passports available. The passport looks akin to the Canadian passport, dimension-wise, said Drew Whittaker, the public programs librarian with Yukon Libraries. Inside, artwork done by local artist Dan Bushnell adorns the stamp pages, inspired by Yukon nature and wildlife, Whittaker said. Interested children will be given passports and be encouraged to come up with a summer reading goal in consultation with their families, he said. 'Maybe it's about numbers of books, but it doesn't have to go numbers of books,' Whittaker said. 'Maybe it's about the type of books that kids want to read, and it's also there's a chance for kids to kind of reflect on reading something new…' The librarian will sign off on a child's reading goal, and stamp the reader's passport as they move towards their goal, he said. 'They take their passport with them. They check out books. They read, read, read all summer long, books from the library, books from home, books from those small community library boxes. They read comic books. They just read as much as they can. They keep track of it, loosely. Keep track, and then they get their passport stamped at any Yukon Public Library location,' he said. Aside the gift of reading, children will also receive a medal at summer's end to reward them for their reading, Whittaker said. All 15 libraries will hold a community event to honour those that have achieved their reading goals, he said. Reading is a radical and revolutionary thing, Whittaker said. It preserves and shares information with others across space and time, he added. 'The value of reading to children is about interacting with their world, is about deeper, enriching experiences with their world. It's about being able to share, communicate their ideas. It's about opening their lives into human creative processes, of which, writing, discussing, debating, is part of our intellectual human existence,' he said. Reading and writing are also important for a child's future, be it education or employment, he said. A good foundation in literacy is connected to better life outcomes, he said. This is the first year the program is running, although previous years have seen similar programs imported from outside the Yukon, said Whittaker. Whittaker said creating a made-in-Yukon version was discussed for years. 'We like the made-in-Yukon approach. We are a different place. I think we're very keenly aware of how, of the differences up here, and often think like, oh yeah, we can do it. We can do our own and it'll be better,' he said. 'Libraries are institutions that are constantly changing, with changing technology and changing community needs. So you know, we're always keen to, like, look at our programs and see if they need a tweak or a change or an overhaul.' Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. Profiles in LGBTQ+ Pride: Actor Marco Calvani

Profiles in LGBTQ+ Pride: Actor Marco Calvani originally appeared on L.A. Mag. LOS ANGELES CELEBRATES 50 INSPIRING ANGELENOS WHO UPLIFT AND ADVANCE THE COMMUNITY IN ESSENTIAL WAYS Playwright, filmmaker and actor; he/him What projects or accomplishments are you most proud of?The Four Seasons (Netflix.) It is my return to acting after 15 years, something I wasn't really chasing nor even dreaming of. I'm proud I was able to put my fears aside and accept this enormous gift that came my way. Working with such amazing talents has been one of the most beautiful experiences of my life, not just professionally. It has changed my approach to the creative work in general and to life about The Four Seasons' Los Angeles premiere here. [Secondly,] my first feature film, High Tide, which I wrote, directed and produced (currently available on demand on Amazon Prime and Apple TV+.) I've been a gay man all my life and a storyteller for most of it, and yet I had never put queer characters at the center of my stories before. Bringing this film to life somehow ended up healing me from my own internalized homophobia. I was born and raised in a very Catholic country and conservative family, and I'd been carrying it with me for so long without even knowing. [Also], my marriage to Marco Pigossi. He is a wonderful man and such a gifted artist. I'm so incredibly happy to be on this journey with him. We've been together for five years now and we've built so much together: a home, a family, a film. We think of High Tide (of which he is the protagonist and the heart) as our first baby; the first one of many! Who from L.A.'s LGBTQ+ community has inspired you? The workers and the volunteers of the LGBTQ Center. I happened to volunteer a few times for the center and to witness their commitment and dedication was just amazing. They filled me with gratitude. The trans community. They are — and always have been — a rare and true example of resilience, an inspiration to always fight back no matter the consequences and [are] an ally in any circumstances. Mickey Liddell and Pete Shilaimon (theater and film producers) and Colman and Raul Domingo (also producers, on top of the obvious!). Both couples are friends of mine and have been together for at least two decades. Their relationships are a true collaboration — both personally and professionally — and that's been tremendously encouraging. They exemplify what success in life really means to me. What does Pride mean to you, and why is it important to celebrate? It is a public platform to embrace myself and celebrate the truth of who I am — despite all the hatred, the fear, the doubt. Most importantly, it is an opportunity to be or become a political body and send a message of union to the authorities and the institutions [and] to fight for equality with the support of the community. Our message is filled with love and joy, with passion and enthusiasm. It is also an invitation to remember and honor all the ones who came before us and fought for our all 50 LGBTQ+ Angelenos making an impact. This story was originally reported by L.A. 'Wheel of Fortune's Vanna White Delights Fans With Photo of 'Stud' Son Nikko originally appeared on Parade. Vanna White wished her son, Nikko, whose real name is Nicholas Santo Pietro, a happy 31st birthday by sharing a photo of him looking handsome while seated in a blue suit. In the caption, she wrote, "Happy 31st birthday to my wonderfully kind, hard working and loving son. You will always be my baby boy, no matter how old you are! I love you Nikko!" White doesn't often share photos of her son but she's not nearly as private about her family as Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings, who recently shared a photo of himself and his son at a baseball game. This particular snap had fans in a frenzy as they chattered in the comments about how handsome he is in the photo. "Your son is handsome Mrs Vanna ❤️❤️❤️" one of White's followers wrote. Another joked, "Wow, it must be hard being that homely 🙄😂" Yet another commenter quipped, "What a Stud." White's son has mostly stayed out of the limelight, despite going viral in the past as his Wheel of Fortune co-host mom bragged about his culinary skills. 🎬SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬 Santo Pietro has a Hollywood connection via his career in real estate.
